I am starting residency this year and have been in the guard for over 2 years as a med student. I have not attended DCC or BOLC yet. From what I understand after commission into the Medical Corps (which I am about to do) I have 3 years to complete both of these. Is that correct? I am having trouble getting info on this from unit and I am not sure where to look up the regulation.

Also how long is DCC and BOLC ? Would it be reasonable to use an elective during PGY2 to complete DCC and then another in PGY3 to complete BOLC? I am planning on doing a fellowship and do not want to take any time off if possible.

Thank you

Yes the general policy is you complete BOLC within 3 years of commissioning. Now given the current issues with COVID 19 there is probably going to be some wiggle room with that (hopefully, but not always a guarantee!).

DCC is 4 weeks. BOLC would be a short course for you so around 3.5 weeks or so, unless something changes. Originally I thought DCC would take the place of a lot of BOLC, but I ended up having to attend DCC, then complete distance learning BOLC phase I online, and scheduled to attend BOLC phase II this summer if it's not cancelled.

Are you attached to APMC? If so you can reach out to them to find out what your timeline is.

My understanding was you have 3 years after residency. I graduated last summer and immediately went to BOLC. It may be different for you as I was grandfathered in and was able to avoid DCC

How were you grandfathered in to DCC if you were commissioned in 2019? I thought it was made effective for everyone after 2017.

Hey I am in the same situation, what was the solution you found for this?

I believe you can only miss 6 weeks off per PGY year for ACGME to avoid extending residency. Always consider that when scheduling vacation and military leave. I did BOLC during my transition from PGY3 to PGY4 so I had overlapping time and could still use my vacation time for personal time off without going over 6 weeks off.
