Hi all, I am an MS2 at a mid-tier medical school interested in anesthesiology.
I was awarded the MSARF FAER fellowship, a fairly competitive anesthesia research fellowship this past summer. However, I was matched with PIs who only did wet lab, bench research in topics completely unrelated to anesthesiology (think immunology, heme/onc research) and so I ended up declining the fellowship so that I would have time to get involved with clinical, perioperative outcomes/QI, anesthesiology-related research at my home institution.
While I have been successful in getting involved with clinical research, I wonder now about the wisdom of that decision and have two questions that I would appreciate advice on. My goal is to match to an academic anesthesiology residency (ex: Duke, Penn, Columbia, etc.).
1. Is it possible / wise to list the MSARF FAER on my CV as an award (with the caveat being that I state I declined the award next to it)? In general, what is the convention on listing declined awards on a CV?
2. Is it a red flag that I declined this fellowship, or can it be explained away by saying that I wanted to conduct research more in the clinical sphere that was more rooted in patient outcomes and QI? This is my genuine reason for it, but would it be better to omit this from my CV entirely to avoid the question?
If you feel there are any red flags this can raise, any advice on how to circumvent/preemptively address them would be much appreciated.
Thank you for your advice.
