Hello everyone,

I've received admission to my top choice school for 2017 entry. However, I will be completing my masters degree around the same as orientation and I also have the opportunity to present my research at various conferences and finish writing manuscripts for publication throughout the year that I would not otherwise be able to do if I started classes.

My question weather or not it is worth deferring admission in order to pursue research endeavours. I will note that I am now in my mid 20's and am hesitant to start a year later.

I would appreciate any advice and insight on this matter from your past experiences.

Thank you.

1) Your age will not be a factor as many people don't start medical school until their mid-20s and beyond (I was in my thirties)

2) What are your ultimate goals?

3) Have your manuscripts already been accepted for publication?

Personally, I would not defer for the reasons you listed. Perhaps if you were finishing a doctorate-level program in a field that will significantly benefit you come residency time.

I would finish your masters but I would also start school.

It's not worth it.

I wouldn't do it. It is, on average, a $250K loss if you take a year off.

Money aside, unless you PI prohibits it, there should be no issue working on and completing some manuscripts during your first year. During my second year I have had plenty of time to finish manuscripts as well as start on new ones from research started over the summer.

You might have to work a few hours extra a week, but if you are wise with your time and are at least an average student I don't think it should have a big effect on your grades or learning.
