Current P4 here! I am currently wanting to do a PGY1 residency. However, I think I might just want to start working after a PGY1 and skip doing a PGY2. Do any of you have any suggestions on whether or not to continue with a PGY2 or just start working at a hospital pharmacy? I think I could always go for a PGY2 after working a year or two (despite the salary cut) but I'm not sure what the best option would be. Any help would be great!

Really depends on your ultimate career goal. Many specialty job positions still do not require PGY2 (they say preferred, but not required). Also, I would do a little research about the available jobs you're interested in right now. Does your future 'dream' job require the extra training? Many competitive positions are fine with just pgy1 residency. If you plan to specialize, use the time of pgy1 and working years afterward to focus on the specialty field you're interested in and you might find that all you need to do is take some certification course and apply for that dream job rather than sacrifice a paycut year pursuing pgy2.

Thank you! This helps a lot.

Secure a PGY-1 position and survive that year before you start to plan thereafter. You may be done with residency after one year of the workload, or you may want to just get your PGY-2 year over with if you decide to specialize.

Statistically, your chances of matching a PGY-2 are greater as a PGY-1 than as a residency-trained pharmacist going back afterwards.
