Should I miss the next few days of classes in lieu of getting my tooth fixed?

So.... over Christmas break one of my back molars broke. It didn't hurt so I waited until I got home from a Christmas visit to get it repaired (~ 4 days since breaking the tooth).

Got an amalgam filling, sent home w/no meds and had increasing pain for days after the procedure. A week and a half after the procedure, I was in such pain that I felt like I would pass out. Called the dentist and the rude receptionist couldn't fit in a "toothache" for another week. That night the pain was still so intense I had to go to the ER. They gave me Penicillin, Cataflam, and Darvocet. I got a new dentist and saw him yesterday (now 2 weeks after my initial dental procedure) and he took an x-ray and sure enough - I have an abscess under the tooth that got the amalgam filling. The pain has still persevered. Previously it was a 10/10 on a pain scale, now it's a 7. He gave me some Tylenol 3 since the Darvocet ran out, but it doesn't do much for me.

The endodontist covered by my insurance is back home (I go to school ~ 3 hours from home) and I got an appointment for Monday (MLK day) for a root canal when I knew I'd be home. Now I'm considering calling tomorrow to see if I can get an earlier appointment because the pain is making it hard to concentrate, and I was unable to go to class today.

Knowing this story (sorry it's so long!) would your opinion be to miss the next few days of school in lieu of getting my tooth fixed ASAP or tough it out (in pain) until Monday.

Thanks to those that take a look here - I guess I just need some confidence here. 😳

Since toothache pain is such a great distraction (which we dont need and is easy to have) Id say get it fixed fast.... Also by word of mouth find dentist who is ecleciastical and who you are happy with.

Chinese proverb: "you cant have toothache and be in love"....I think this holds with medicine..:meanie:

Thanks 🙂

I think I just needed to get past the idea of missing classes to get this fixed 😳
it sounds like you won't be that productive sitting in class in pain... might as well cut your losses and hope that you can get it taken care of sooner, then recoup some of the lost time over the long weekend. (rather than wasting it sitting in pain)

agreed. putting it off is not going to help you out any.

Thanks guys for just confirming what I thought I should do. Got my root canal today and it's already better, even with the swelling and procedural pain.

Unfortunately I have a lot of catch up this weekend from missing classes this week. Ugh.
