Does anyone know what the path to specializing would be for a direct accessions dentist? Would you be able to apply for specialty programs your first year in? Any info. on how this works would be helpful.

Currently they only consider applications that do not interfere with your PRD (projected rotation date). Specialty applications are in the spring, so by spring of your credentialing year you typically already have orders to an operational billet. Thus you have to do a credentialing year, then a 2-3 year operational billet before you can get to a residency as a direct accession. This is how it usually works.

In the Army direct accessions can apply for several of the specialty programs while they are still civilians. Once accepted they come on active duty. Each year the specific programs that can be applied for can change, but generall OMFS and 2 yr AEGD are available. Because of this, if you want to apply, the deadline is quickly approaching in November and you should get with a recruiter quickly or you will have to wait until the next rotation a year from now.

Thanks for the responses, I should have specified that I am wondering for a dental student who is looking at doing a direct accession type program and is looking to specialize. If he applies and is accepted to a civilian residency would he have to wait until his residency is completed to join? Is there a way he can apply sign a contract in dental school to join after he finished and apply for the military residencies?

No. It actually may be harder to join if you have already specialized. The Army only needs certain specialties, so they can be very selective in who/what specialty they will consider. Your better chance of coming in is as a general dentist and specializing once in the military in a military program.
