As universities were being founded in the United States, the diplomas, following the European standard, were printed in Latin. Fast forward to today and most diplomas are now printed in English. Some Universities, such as the University of Pennsylvania, prints their diplomas in Latin. The DMD is an abbreviation for Dentariae Medicinae Doctoris (Doctor of Dental Medicine). Similarly, the MD is an abbreviation for Medicinae Doctoris (Doctor of Medicine), not medical doctor. That being said, these are two separate and equal degrees recognized by the dental profession.
