I simply took up a project idea from Dr. Larsen and with that it landed me co-authorship with these two abstract....

My project was to figure out the ATP binding cassette pumps on Candida albicans... later on, a couple of other med students were working on different projects and mines correlated with theres..... The rest is history...

You can either come with an idea or take up an on going project.... picking up an on going project is best because you can get faster results thus getting published early....

I'm an Aggie and I never thought of Sac State peeps as slackers.... The two students I knew of were the hardest working student I knew... without them, I don't think I would have passed Physical Chem....

Sweet!!!! How do you like it at DMU, was it different then you expected?

A guy from Davis called me that after he found out I was from sac... the cool thing was that I ended up tutoring him in anatomy...Talk about sweet revenge:clap:

I actually love it here.... It's the BEST place to learn medicine, specially osteopathic medicine.

I'm not just saying that, when you get a chance to go to conventions the DMU name goes faaarrrrr!!!!

Many of the physicians I've met know how well we're trained as physicians and in OMM....

I can do without the weather changes though.... 😉

hahaha.... serves him right.... 🙂

Some people can be really shallow.... Not everyone in Davis is that way....

I'm sorry about the weather, I wont tell you it was 68 degrees here and sunny.😛

That slack state stroy is the one I thik of every time I here some dumb people on this board belittle DO's.

JP, your projects sound interesting! Did you do any research at Davis? I'm wondering if you had prior experience in what you did for your projects at DMU. Is there an animal research facility there?

Prad, I'm glad to hear Darci's OK 🙂 Yeah, it's scary to think of all the things we'll be exposed to, but oh well, I'm sure it'll be worth it! And we have got to get our hands into the research going on at DMU!

Funny 😛

It is gettin' warm here though.... 40 degrees or somethin' like that.... Though, there's still snow on the ground....

If you're bored w/classes and have time to do somethin'.... you may want to read Dr. Norman Gevitz "The DO: Osteopathic Medicine in America" .... your first exam is based on....

Wow, such a sudden rush in the conversation flow here!

I've always thought that Sac State was one of the better CSUs!

Hey JP, I'm a fellow UC grad! Though not an Ag... Davis was actually my first choice for undergrad, but Cal was a bit more generous in the $$ part of the equation.

Been there done that... but I'm hitting Iserson right now.

Jane!!! How are you? Your right about the research, I do want to do some. More importantly I want to go to the AOA convention in new orleans never been there before.😉

Hey popoy, you going to be around in July when I get there I'd love to meet you.

I did do research at UCDMC (UCDavis Medical Center) at their Orthopedic Research Laboratories.... It was on Osteogenesis Imperfecta. "Increased Diameter and Strength with OIM mice Treated with Alendronate."

I also did research on a novel protein belonging to the Bone Morphogenetic Protein in the same lab w/different profs.... I'm not sure if I ever got noted for my work, but did appear on TV 🙂

My previous research experience had nothing to do with what I did here.... which was the beauty of it. Dr. Larsen took me on knowing I had no previous background in microbiology.... He's awesome!!! All of the research faculty here will be willing to work with you if you're just a beginner....

Here at DMU.... There WAS an animal facility but they took it out due to PETA issues.... Long story.... but they are starting again with a bunch of Rats/mice and doing some pain nerve thing....It's pretty big.... They've had several abstracts published as well as manuscripts being edited and published soon...

My sis is actually attending Cal.... computer sci.... 🙂

Definite sudden rush in posting.... 😎

The AOA Convention will be in New Orleans this year?? And I thought Vegas was cool enough! Hey Prad, let's get something ready to present really quickly so that we can get a free trip!! 😛

Ahhh...the PETA people...party-poopers...

Prad, isn't the Iserson book so informative?? He seems a bit down on DOs in some parts, but all the info and advice he gives more than makes up for it.

JP, my old roommate was Math/CS. Spent all her time in the computer lab. What year is your sis?

Hey popoy, you going to be around in July when I get there I'd love to meet you.

I should still be around. I'm planning on doing an internship for my masters at the Department of Public Health..... It would be nice to get together....

REMIND ME.... I have a copy of the notes for your first weeks class called "Intro to Osteopathic Medicine." I can give those to you guys when y'all get here.... The current first years loved it because all you have to do is sit back and highlight the notes.... Just remind me when the time comes and I'll email it to anyone that needs or wants it....

😎

I've got our project: How many PETA members does it take to make a scientist puke?

What do you guys think?

Look under Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Iserson and you'll see him actually complement us, DOs....

Yup, that sounds like my sis.... in computer labs or in her computer all the time.... she's in her second year....

 and then we can examine the vomit...."yes, an interesting topic indeed" (BTW, who was that guy yesterday who posted the same message all over???)

It's not bad, you just need to be able to weed the BS a little. I'll give you a better analysis after I finish.

Giving up the notes does make Popoy a cool person

Yeah, I saw that! And I read the same thing in the PM&R forum here...

The past president was a great man but PETA driven and not the bread kind.... 😉 😀

Get involved in the school and I'm sure you guys can attend the convention - which I will be going to, as well - and I'm sure you can get some mula to go....

Here's a bit of secret.... The student government has money for students to go to one conference each year.... all you have to do is apply and pretty much get it....

You both have to think about two major conventions.... the AOA Convention and the AAO Convocation.... Chose wisely 😉

I think that thats about the only place he praises us. What did he post I missed it.

Ok you got me whats AAO? The American Acadamy of Osteopathy? More importantly where is it at?

There was an M.D. (I don't know if he/she was a student, resident, etc) who said that PM&R is a specialty where D.O.s have the advantage. This was a few months ago, and I don't remember what thread it was posted in...sorry...

What are the main differences between those two conferences, JP?

You're right.... the American Academy of Osteopathy.... Their primary purpose is the advancement of OMM.... so you learn from the best of the best.... This year it's in Ottawa, Canada.... Norman Gevitz will be there as well as some of the gurus of the techniques you will learn here...

They'll announce the next years location during this years convo.... March 19-23, 2003....

We have 26 students going along with the entire OMM Department clinician/faculty.... Dr. Boesler, Dr. Woolley, and Dr. Figueroa....

UAAO (Undergraduate American Academy of Osteopathy) helps pay students to go.... it's a club here on campus.... I'm the National Representative and the Regional Coordinator for the UAAO Executive Council.... That's a mouth full.... Anyway, I did my best to get 50% off of the plane tickets, got mucho mula from the admins for my proposal, and our VP headed the UAAO Silent Auction that raised over $2000.... As you can see, we most definitely helped students this year go.... 🙂

😎

Hey Popoy, your a moderator, maby you can help me out with this. I really want to get a "150,000 dollars in debt and all I got was this stupid stethoscope" T-shirt.

I saw it on sdn, when I first started, but now it's gone. 🙁

All they have now is the coffee mug. Do you think they'll ever bring back the t-shirt?

Whoa...it really pays to be involved! You must have some kick-butt time management skills, JP! Is the AAO Convocation always in international places(i.e. not necessarily in the US)?

AOA Convention = as you know, full of pharm companies, and a lot of law making issues and current medical issues.... not much OMM

AAO Convocation = more OMM and how OMM can be incorporated into surgery, FP, IM, peds, OB/Gyn, etc....

That was brought up before... and unfortunately I don't think the T-shirt will be back... I think Dr. Lee Burnett is workin' on it.... Hope it comes back though.... I'll let the higher uppers that more peeps are gettin' interested in gettin' a T-shirt....

I can see it now:

Popoy, DO,MPH,MHA,MS,PhD
President, American Medical Association

😀 😀 😀

Nope, last year it was in Virginia. The year previous to that it was Colorado.... This year the reason we're in Ottawa is that DOs are now FULLY licensed in Ottawa when a couple of years ago we were somewhat limited...

We are making progress! This is very good news...do they have osteo. med schools in Ottawa? or anywhere else in Canada?

Ya tell the higher uppers that people want that T-shirt. I want to buy several pairs, so that when I'm in residency and I'm working the ER, and patients b!tch about waiting a half hour to see me, I can just point to the T-shirt.

Nope, no med school there YET!!! 😉

Seriously, I won't be shock if we see 10 osteo schools pop up in the next 20-30 years.... maybe international. There are DO's workin' in places like Argentina, Chile, Australia.... It's gettin' there...

Wait, so then all of the DOs that can practice there now are American? I'd like to practice in Ottawa...I have family there...

That's a good point you bring up.... many peeps think just because were docs that we're filty rich... little do they know that the majority are under loans.... or scholarships.... which I'm in.... Any questions about NHSC or Navy HPSP... ask away, I got both, but chose NHSC.... 😉

When I point out to people in coffee shops around here that most docs are in loans they're somewhat shocked.... 😎

Jane, I think that only the US DO's get the medical training, The other DO's in the world only get the OMM

You, both, have great sense of humor.... promise me that you keep that up during medical school.... and you'll be fine....

Nothin' like humor to offset the bad days....

Yeah, how are the coffee shops in the area? I like to study in cafes. Are they close to campus?

I did consider NHSC, but I think I'd like to specialize...but if I change my mind, I can always apply for the next school year, right?
