Tuesday....Boo Yah. Not to mention post #1000, bitches. Now that's just pathetic to get excited over that.

Welcome to...uhh...Heaven??? (Nah, it's just Iowa. The state where no native citizen has an accent.) You'll likely like it here. 🙄

P.S. Lift with your legs, not your back...lol 👍

Best cable services in Des Moines??

Mediacom?
Dish network?
Direct TV?
Or is there another local cable/internet company that is good?
Anyone?
They have comcast out here and I'm not familiar with mediacom.

Mediacom's customer service is total S*&t.

I humbly suggest Qwest DSL (if you will be having local service phone anyway) at $26.95 per month (1.5Mbps/500Kbps) on their current discount promo. This assumes you get a home line package (Qwest Choice) including 3 features (such as caller ID) for $30/month; which gives you a $5 discount on the DSL. Otherwise, a basic phone line with $.15/min long distance is $16/mo and DSL can be had in 3 speeds for $26, $32 or $45??/month. If you want Dish Network, Qwest will bundle that on as well and give you another $5 month kickback on the bundle. It's less than $100/month for their Dish+5Mbps DSL+local service bundle and they have awesome customer service.

I haven't had Mediacom cable internet for a couple years, but believe that for $110/mo they'll give you digital cable, local phone and internet (usually about 3Mbps/256Kbps). There is usually some small discount available for new customers if you contract for a year or more. (But, like I said...I think their customer relations blows.)

Good luck dude. 👍

We did mediacom. Cable internet is nice. digital cable and phone included. Each is 29.95 for one year. So under 100 bucks essentially. My wife talks on the phone all of the time long distance so this was a greta deal phone wise for us. We used to have qwest in NE, but just couldn't stand DSL. Ihaven't had any problems customer servicewise problems with mediacom, and I had to call them two days ago.

I had to pick the hottest day of the summer to move in last week. It's nice to get settled a few weeks before school starts. Anyone else out in the West Des Moines area?

I wish that I knew more people out here to help me unload all of my wifes crap of the truck. So, on that note, if anyone is unloading in the next few weeks and needs an extra pair of hands to hold up stacks of boxes, let me know, I'd be more than willing to help.

Enjoy the last few weeks.

Hey, anyone going to the activities on the week before orientation?

I agree, in that ocassionally I actually got to talk to a human when I called them (before I dropped the service). They were growing fast at the time. Still, I tried to call them a week ago to sign up and it took 3 days for them to get back to me. I'm a bit biased because my cable used to "go out" at least once a week. Des Moines service is likely better than what we have here in Poedunk.

While the $29/each cable deal is competitive, keep in mind that after the first 12 months it's more like $42 each for internet and TV services. With Qwest you can keep the intro price for as long as you want to stay with the DSL/home line doublet ~$62/mo.

P.S. If anybody wants an inexpensive cable modem...I have one that I'd distance myself from for a measly $10. 😀

Soundman, So are you paying $29/mo for the 16 channels of basic cable, or is that their family plan (44 channels)?

I believe you have to get family cable or higher and bundle all three together to get the deal. It still will be cheaper for us even when the specials run out, then where we were. I was paying 120 for just cable and internet, and that was fairly basic 1-66 and some TLC type channels. But there was no competition in that area so we got hosed.

When the specials run out, we'll be paying approximately 134 a month for cable/internet/and phone with unlimited long distance. My wife is a huge talker and all family is long distance so this is really a must. With qwest the phone with unlimited long distance was 60 bucks a month itself at our old home, so we are saving about 50 bucks a month or so. Hope that long winded response helps.

By the way my family and I will be doing the dinner/movie thing which sounds fun for pre-orientation.

Just an FYI, my girlfriend and I are officially moved in here in Des Moines, at Park Avenue Apartments. Anyone moving in here or anywhere in Des Moines please let me know as well, and I'll be happy to help with the move in. It's hard to believe we'll be in class in less than a month!

Excited to meet all of you. And to get that computer!!!

Stay cool all-
Derek

Well, I'm off to Yellowstone for the week then it's off to DMU baby! We leave here (SLC) on Saturday and will be getting there about Sunday afternoon (driving all night). We'll be unpacking monday. Alright, so this is kind of a random post, but I know I can't possibly be the only one who is absolutely obsessed with Entourage. I mean, I never really watch/like sitcoms, but this one really has me hooked. I guess my question is a) will anyone have HBO down at school and if yes b) can I come over and watch it so I don't go crazy? Anyways, look forward to seeing you all very soon, and good luck moving to those who haven't made the trip yet!

Easy there Johnny Drama, I to will join you in your mission to sponge premium cable from our fellow DMU'ers....if anyone is offering, I will be over on Sunday at 8:50 with snacks.

On the topic of keeping in touch with the important things in life....i.e. My Stories. Is anyone else down with the Slingbox? I have set mine up at my folks place so I can watch my favorite teams and stream free cable to my lab top....Does anyone know if our PDA's have internet capabilities? I would love to set up the Slingbox on that as well.

Words to the Tech Nerds :horns: .

Quick Question:

Sooo...I haven't logged into the New Student Portal for a while now. I went to do it today and the link I had listed under 'My Favorites' is not working. I tried going through DMU's website, but still couldn't find it.

If anyone could post me the link so I can check things out, I'd appreciate it!

Please and Thanks.

Sooo...don't laugh (too hard), but I think I might be the number one procrastinator in our class. I don't have an apartment yet...

I drove to Des Moines yesterday (I live 3 hours away) and I REALLY love the Park Ridge Apartments (10 minutes from the school)...then I noticed several apartments directly across from DMU. The problem was they were already closed by the time I went to check them out.

Can anyone tell me...

How many apartment buildings are there?

If there is any availability left?

Cost?

And most importantly...do they allow a CAT? (The cat thing is very important to me!)

I'm guessing that a majority of people live in the those apartments do to location alone...but if they don't allow pets, I'll probably spend the extra money on gas and live in Park Ridge. If they do allow animals, I would appreciate any extra info and perhaps a name/number for the manager.

Please and Thanks (again)

This is a random question but does anyone know if we can possibly pay our tuition with a credit card before we get our loans? I want to stack up the miles on my credit card so I can fly home for free. Then, I can just pay my credit card with my loans. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, do you guys know when the first loan disbursement is?

P.S. I'm driving to Des Moines tomorrow to move in. Yay! Why is it that on the day I'm driving up I35 that the weather shows the hottest places in the US are right up I35? I bet everyone's loving to move in this heat!

If you look on the portal under financial aid it has all the dispersement dates. 08/10/2006 is our 1st one. 🙂

The apartments right across school that you noticed were probably The Imperial & Windsor Terrace apartments. Both of those complexes allow cats & Windsor Terrace is okay w/ dogs.

Imperial is $580 for a 1 bedroom & I think Windsor Terrace is somewhere right around $600.

I am fairly certain that both complexes have plenty of availability as they are rather large. Venture Management owns the Imperial @ (515) 255-6677. If you want any more info about the two places, feel free to PM me.

Hey fellow DO Iowans!

I just got off RAGBRAI yesterday as I was one of the 6 physicians who worked the route as an emergency medicine provider. I am a resident in emergency medicine at U-Iowa. U-Iowa EM is very DO friendly as we have 2 DO faculty and 2 new DO residents this year (myself being one).

They put one new intern on each RAGBRAI EMS ambulance along the route daily and the physician role of the intern is based upon the individual physician's comfort level. I was a medic for a long time so I was very comfortable bringing a physician level of care to the race. This meant making complex decisions on the necessity to transport some patients and the rationale behind not transporting others and letting them continue to ride. EMS providers are not taught how to do this so I found it helpful for the patients to have physicians onboard. We were all put through ATLS, ACLS, NRP, PALS, and animal lab before we started the ride.

I got to ride right behind Lance for about 17 miles, and he stopped several times...once at the famous Pork Chop Man's stand, once to share a piece of coconut pie with a local, and once in someone's front yard for a beer.

If any of you at DMU are interested in EM and want one of us DO's to come down and speak to you about the opportunities at U-Iowa, drop me a PM. Although it is DO friendly here, it is by no means non-competitive. Tons of MD's and DO's alike get ranked too low to match here and virtually everhwere else in EM. You have to be at the top of your game and you need to always take the USMLE to give yourself that extra advantage. Good luck in your future endeavors DO's and keep in touch!

Matt

Corpsman-

Apparently everyone and their brother was interested to hear from you, because I just tried pming you, and it said that your pm box was full. Just thought I'd let you know.

Anyone doing the pre-orientation activities? Looks like me and the wife may be doing the Billy Joe's Dinner/Movie on Wednesday.

Just drove 830 miles today from San Diego to Colorado and only 850 miles tomorrow. see you guys soon.
Does anybody know where I can find our test schedule for this semester, I thought I remember seeing it on here.

Nice.
Just did the 1100 mile trip non-stop. With a 24 foot truck and a auto-transport trailer in tow, it took about 20 hrs. Oh yea baby.
Just got the DSL hooked up and am now officially in Des Moines.
Holla if you live at the Maple Grove Villas!!

Cya next week folks.

Hey folks! I've been in Des Moines for about a week now. I really like the place! It's going to be a fun few years.

Hey Jbone, I made that same drive about a month and a half ago, I'm afraid I beat ya though, we had a 26 footer with an auto transporter! Hey did you get here before last sunday? I wasn't in church to see all the new guys, I had family come in town that day.

Yea, only a 24 footer with a auto transporter. I know, what a loser.
Anyway, no I wasn't here for church. I'll be there next Sunday though...Waukee ward?

Anyone know anything about wireless routers? I went to Best Buy today to look at some, and the "kid" who helped me told me that he wouldn't recommend anyone to install their own router and... get this... I should pay the Geek Squad an extra $60 to drive over to my apt. and spend 5 minutes setting me up. Is it really that hard? I'm thinking I may just ask the Techies at school next week what they think. Any info/insight that anyone lends would be very helpful.

See you all next week...

Yeah, our ward meets at 9:00, see ya then, hey let me know if you guys need any help moving in.

Welcome class of 2010 and congratulations on your admission to DMU. I am a second year at DMU, and just wanted to let you know that we had the same kind of pre-orientation activities last year, and it was truly very fun and memorable. We definitely got to know each other a lot better before even classes started during this time. I highly encourage all of you guys to participate on these events as they are great opportunities to get to know a lot of your classmates as well as second year-students who are eager to help you guys to get through this year. It's interesting that your best friends in med school will be the ones that you get to hang with during the first few weeks of school as you really won't get much chance to hang out with anyone outside of class as your anatomy and other courses begin, and everyone will be super busy to better transition into med school rather than making new friends. At the same time, your friends in med school are the people that can understand you very well as you all progress together on the same boat. A lot of us second year students will be at the karaoke night as this night will be one of the most memorable nights of your pre-orientation week. Hope to see you........

You folks need to come to the Des Moines 7th Branch. We start at 11:30. That's much more fun.

DJ-

Don't buy all of that BS. It is NOT difficult to set up a router, since there are basically step by step instructions. And even if you did have trouble or run into any difficulties at all, you can just call the router's tech support line, and they will guide you through the entire process. Eff the Geek Squad. Save your money.

I have HBO! I'm a major Sopranos fan and with the last season starting this winter I definitely had to get it. Last year I actually had someone tape and mail me the episodes (yeah yeah...pretty cool aren't I?) so I feel your pain. Can't say I've seen Entourage yet but maybe you guys will get me hooked on it.

I'm living in the Grand Prix apartments just across from the school. Is anyone else living there? I'm moving down on Saturday and I'm really excited to meet everyone!

Man, I am just loving the pre-orientation activities!!!!!!! Anyone gone to any yet???

People like that piss me off. It is not hard to set up a wireless network, hell your grandmother could do it if she wanted to. The ISP that hooks you up should do it for free and, if not, give you tips on what to do. If that fails, there are hundreds of tutorials around the net (CDNET, ZDNET, ect. are really good places to start). Don't get taken in by some idiot with glasses who says he can make Jesus appear on your screen for a low price of 300.00. Generally, they have the computer knowhow of "just above" the layman (which of course makes them think their **** don't stink).

Wow Jamers...tell us how you really feel
I'm excited about going to the orientation thing tonight. How have the rest of the activities been? We have been so busy moving in that we haven't had a chance to go to one yet.

No, have they been good? I guess I should get to the picnic.

We'll be there tonight (farmers market) as well as tomorrow and Saturday. Hope to see you all there. 👍

I can't remember if I originally saw this somewhere, but what exactly is the dress for orientation next week? Is it business casual, or am I just making that up?

Thanks.

I have no clue about the dress. I went to the Billy Joe thing last night, but got lost on the way there, so was like 15-20 minutes late. Wife had to stay home with the kids so I was there by myself. Everyone had on nametags except me. Oh well kind a rough start, but i found the movie funny.

I think we are going to the picnic. Probably bring all the kids and wifey to that.

I think your right about business casual. I think I will dress like that for the first day then switch to shorts and t-shirt for the rest of the week.

Last year they asked us to dress business casual... and you should at least for the first day since they'll take your picture for your ID and for class identification purposes.

Enjoy orientation week! Some people thought it was a bit tedious, but med school has been such a long held dream for me... one I thought might not even come true... that when I finally made it in, I savored every minute of that introductory period. It was wonderful... and it really made you feel confident that you had chosen a special school. You'll see.

So, yay, the day is almost finally here! Congratulations to all of you and see you on campus next Monday!
