The Hy-Vee in Windsor Hts (on University between 63rd and 72nd) used to have coupons for the Great Clips just east of there for $5.99 haircuts, but now it's 10% off of the $14 they charge ($1.40 off for all you non-math types which is still $12.60 which is way to much IMHO).

So that used to be a good deal. I haven't gotten my hair cut since I ran out of the $5.99 coupons a month and a half ago. I have a difficult time paying more than $10 for a haircut.

There's a new place by the HyVee in WDM on Grand called Fantastic Sams. They have haircuts for $6.95 till the promotion is over in the middle of October. She was good, albeit a little crazy 🙂

Totally agree w/ NavyDoc...

Inevitably someone will tell you about a place right behind Walgreens on 35th near the school...DON'T GO THERE. It's not that they do a bad job (they don't) it is that they don't have signs posted for prices...$18.50 or something for a haircut that I now do myself at home & have my wife finish what I can't reach. Ridiculous.

So for the 2nd years & beyond that are attempting to hijack the 2010 thread with me...so listen to this stuff:

Today we have a meeting w/ Dr. Hills about COMLEX/2nd semester scheduling. That Intro to Clinical Clerkships (ICC) class they are talking about having in May!!! That would mean that classes would go until about May 28th w/ Boards starting on the 4th of June!!! Nice board break, huh?

Some people were bitching b/c if we didn't do this they would have to come back for the first week of July for that class & maybe some Legal class....complaining that they would then have to pay for rent, yada, yada, yada. I understand all that but, they choose to come to DMU so don't be so excited to get the heck out. On top of that, financial aid is for 12 months second year...living expenses are included in that so I don't feel that is a very valid reason.

Not to mention that going through May would mean that some of us will be taking USMLE & COMLEX so freaking close together that my brain hurts thinking about it.

Anyway...anyone else have any thoughts on this issue?

Here was my suggestion that I email out class prez:

Derm is only 14 lectures long - as I saw on last years notepool. It's a total of 8 days (including the weekend) and exam day. So why not, since we just have Hemo at the end of the year, hence extra class time....put the Derm with Hemo and then replace that Derm Spring time with the ICC class?

I'm waiting to hear back what he has to say about that idea.

Otherwise, yes, I agree that I think it should be at the end of June/July instead of trying to cram it before. Otherwise we'll just be sitting around all summer while I could've had more time studying for boards. If they can't pay rent, I have an extra room they can have for the week. I understand that it's an inconvience, but they can get the month of July prorated in rent for that one week.

No matter what option is presented and how many people like it, someone will always claim a life-threatening reason that it won't work for them.

This is why they should never give students choices in course schedules. No offense to anyone, but med school classes have too many anal retentive people who have to have things their way.

I scheduled my boards for right at the end of our "2 week board break." But enough people in our class (roughly 12) whined about the scheduling that they switched it so that board break was in June. Then a larger quantity complained and wanted the way it was posted on our schedule when we signed up to take boards. Administration decided 1 change was enough and left it the way that the dozen or so who complained loudest first wanted it.

This issue will probably divide your class and create enemies amongst them. It's sad but a likely fact. It did in our class. Best of luck either way. My suggestion is to stand back, let whatever happens happen and not get too bent out of shape about it. 94-96% of you will pass boards regardless of how the schedule is done and as long as you can find 8-12 people in your class dumber than you, you're fine 😀

NavyDoc,

I can totally see where you are coming from & can see how it could easily create enemies. My only problem is that I am planning on applying for a residency in something competitive like G. surg, Ortho, or Cardiology (I know I have to do IM first, but still important) so I need to do as well as possible on boards.

Obviously I am not going to rely only on 'board break' time, but I know how much I can learn in two days of studying like mad before an exam so I can't imagine how much more prepared I am going to be if I had an extra week or two. My other thought was to schedule my USMLE about a week or two after the COMLEX so that I can do well on the test that really matters 😱

ARE YOU THIRSTY YET??? TAKE A DRINK? JUST A SIP THOUGH!!!

I totally understand where you're coming from. From my personal experience, I didn't feel like I learned much new in the last week since I was in full-on nervous mode. I think you learn the most your first month of board review and less each month after that, at least thats how it was for me.

My advice to stay out of it is primarily directed at just letting whatever happens happen for our own sanity. If you worry too much about it you'll just get stressed out. As sad as it is to admit it, the loudest people who whine the most will have the most pull. We had mandatory classes the week before I took boards and I still managed to do all right, actually better than I had hoped.

Are COMLEX boards only offered 1 day? If not, you can schedule boards whenever gives you the amount of cram time you want. Just don't do what some of my classmates did and set a date then panic and move it back. Pick a date and study with that date in mind and you'll be ready for it. Also, try not to take it too late in the summer. This will likely be your last "summer off" for a long long time, being done while some are still studying is a great feeling. For the record, so is sleeping in until as late as you want for weeks on end!

A lot of my classmates took the USMLE about a week or 2 after COMLEX and said that was as close to perfect timing as it gets. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the info & advice...I am completely not the type of person of worry about things or let other people or the schedule have an effect on me. I am actually probably one of the few non-Type A's in my class.

Now, 2010's...you may have your thread back & yes my life is so exciting that I check SDN on a Friday night.

I thought most people try to take atleast a month off to do board review. Is this not possible for you 09ers?

It would be possible to have ~ 4 weeks if we can decide to come back & take the ICC class in July, but like NavyDoc was saying...some people are whining about having to come back for a couple weeks in July & it always seems like the people complaining the most have more pull than the people content w/ the way the schedule already is.

I'd say on average people in my class took 2-3 weeks off. I had a week and 3 of those days we had Kaplan Review, but it worked for me.

When you're about to take boards everyone asks you, "Are you ready?"

The answer is and always will be, "No." You can never be fully ready for boards and you will never know everything. Trying to know everything will only leave you feeling stressed out beyond belief. The most important/productive studying you will do will likely occur from January (or whenever you start studying) until about 3 weeks before you take boards. From then in, I feel you should just be reviewing stuff you have already covered. If you're trying to learn new stuff those last 2-3 weeks, you're way behind the 8 ball.

My advice: Pick a date when you're gonna take boards and prepare with that date in mind. Once you know when you're gonna take boards, plan your studying accordingly.

I selected the end of May as my time to take boards, I started studying in January from about 6AM until classes at 8PM and then in the evening when I was done with class studying. By the time the last week finally came, I was so sick of studying and burned out from it, I didn't get much productive studying done. I had already covered everything I wanted to cover and was only reviewing so it didn't hurt me that much.

When I first told classmates back in january that I was taking boards the end of May, many thought I was nuts to take it so early. By the time my day to take it came, most told me they were jealous of me for getting it done so soon and that they were burned out from studying and just wanted to take it and be done.

A buddy of mine didn't take his boards until August, by mid July he was sick of studying and could only handle studying 2-3 hours a day because he was so sick of it. After he took his boards, he said he felt like he would have done better had he taken it in May or June than he did taking it in August.

Just my advice and experiences.

lol, I just spent my friday evening studying the CAC and the ETC. Yea.
My wife doesn't even know who I am anymore. Oh well.
For those who need some good visuals for this Biochem crap, this is a good website for ya. Check out the CAC.

Nice website Jamers! It goes along with the second edition of Concepts in Biochemistry by Rodney Boyer, a prof at Hope College. It has fantastic illustrations (I happen to have a copy). Unfortunately it's like $120 new.😱

Has anyone looked at the Crutch CD for Behaiv Med stuff?? It is helpful at all??? I need to borrow it again from you soundman and copy it. I can probably just sit and copy during lecture Monday if that's alright.

😱 😱 😱 😱
Did you just call me jamers???? OUCH!!
jbone...all together now...jbone.
Besides if it was Jamers who posted the link, you know it would have something to do with porn. "sexwithfurniture.com"

BTW, where you at FS??? Been here at the library all day looking for your sorry ace.

LOL. No porn there, dangit. Just who the heck is everybody anyway. Still haven't met half of ya at school. I'm the thirty-something AV guy you might see popping in and out of the control room during lectures in the auditorium. We make the lovely mp3's that you'll find on the network-I drive (and portal).

So, who here epected the biochem test to be harder than it was? 😛

Been here off and on since 1. Study rooms were full when I got here and didn't see you. But i'm gonna look again right now.

Study rooms FULL on saturday night? That's sick.

Closed the library down again tonight. Yay for ETS and Carbs. Beh Med should be a joy to study for. 🙄

A DO8 buddy of mine recommends listening to the mp3 at 1.5 speed (so that Means 😴 will be talking at normal-human speed) while reading the notes. Reportedly using two senses helps to catch what's emphasized better. dunno.

By the end of DO8 year one, he says that maybe 40 people were regularly attending Means's lectures. :meanie:

BTW: Who here has signed up for notepool? I've heard nothing more about it since orientation week.

Just to let you guys know about your 2010 Notepool...Your Notepool committee has been choosen & will get under way very soon. They started Beh. Med way early this year so it really sucks that you guys don't have this set up yet. I would suggest you guys consider being a notetaker. You can make some decent money & it isn't a bad way to learn the material (usually $30-35 a note set).

By the way...what the crap is this about you guys having to do a Beh. Med SPAL??? You guys don't even know how to do a History yet!!! How do they expect you to do this? Crazy...

Yeah..Uhhh. Means and Monsma demonstrated a typical interaction to show us how the trained "patient" will be evaluating us and how the SPAL might go.

Unfortunately, their criteria list would likely screw over most non-PHD psychologists (that I have experience with) should they be limited to 15 minutes. Sounds like we're supposed to represent ourselves as 1st year students and yet still completely assess the patients willingness to change, psychological basis, precipitating events, yada yada. Should be a real eye-opener for our class!

I hope it isn't worth much of our grade.

Is this true?? There is no list of when quizzes will be anywhere in the syllabus. Any information on this would be great.

The quizzes are entirely random and of the "pop" variety.
Boz used to give hints as to when they were coming.

We are hoping to get notepool going hopefully by next week. Do NOT be afraid since I am the webmaster of notepool, I have all power. Silly, silly people guess I fooled them. 😀

Seriously though, think about being notetakers. That's what we are always lacking apparently. If enough people do it, then you don't have to do it all the time. So it would be nice to have a bunch of notetakers to make it easy. 👍

JBone and Soundman,
Missed you guys in the library today. Just not the same without you guys.

Whatever... I've been here since 6 p.m. It's almost 10 and where is Fs? Home watching his porn.
🙁

Any hints on the money strategy for systems classes (GI/Cardio/etc)?

Robbins? Cecils? Notepool?

I used the course handouts, my class notes, and notepool with a bit of Step-up mixed in.
Do whatever worked for you last year is my advice!

Holy smokes has it been 24hours? Me, FS, and jbone or stomping all over beh med atm. It's crying like a little baby. But of course biochem > all.

Misparas, When you get a chance can you put whatever "Darkest Hour" music you have on your chip so I can burn it . Thanks. If I ever get out of the library I'll bring you some of my music.

anyone gonna be in the Library cramming BH into their heads tonight?

Professional or not, Beh. Med is complete garbage. Quote me. Sorry folks, I am just having a hard time trying to study for something so abstract and blaaahhh when I have a freakin huge biochem test that is waiting to rip me a new hole on Tuesday. Thanks to Matt for the notes because that will be about the extent of my knowledge on this crap. Back to Biochem, good luck to everyone.

BTW, just ignore the grumpy old man, I've been walking funny since this morning and it makes me...a sad panda. 🙁

Can't say we never warned you 😉 Honestly, there's no way to prepare for those. Wait, yes there is, get a PhD in psych and practice for 20 years.

I just think it could be taught better. It is making people hate it and, with all honesty, psychology is a beautiful science that can be used in almost any aspect of medicine (maybe I am a little partial here 🙂 ). I do know that I will no longer read the book, that is for sure.

I wholeheartedly agree, there are WAY more effective ways of teaching than reading the PP's VERBATIM to us... That has to change or I doubt even half of our class will be attending lectures anymore.

I wonder what the class average will be. Will they do any curving if a lot of people fail? Re-takes? Who knows...

Off to anatomy lab now- have a good labor day weekend if I don't see any of you before the end of the day! I'll be drinking barley pop at the MN state fair and watching college football-

Well that Beh Med test was dumb. I went to class. I read the book. I studied, felt I knew the material and could apply it and still barely passed the test. What kind of test is that? Class average was a 76% so atleast a little better than last year, but are you telling me that a class that averages a 90 on a biochem test, is so dumm that all of a sudden they can only average a 75 on a test. That is teaching plain and simple, and it's not getting done in this class. No one knew what to actually study, how to focus their attention, and actually gain some usefullness from the lectures/PP's. Jamers is right that it does turn you off for this class for sure, especially when you put the effort it and still get stung.

/rant

I so echo your comments Soundman. I took enough psych and sociology in undergrad (18 cr @ 4.0) to realize by the 3rd class that we were in deep S#@t. I find myself longing for a meaningful and well taught curriculum that might even come close to matching 200 level classes at ISU. /rant/rant/

According to my DO9 and DO8 buds, this class has sucked balls for three years and hasn't improved a bit. They don't even teach to the boards. I feel jipped. And a cold SPAL tuesday after a biochem test? Gimme a break.😕

At least Anatomy lab is cool! (figuratively and literally.lol) Have a good holiday weekend folks. 😀

Yea, at the library.
I spend more time here than at my own house. Oh well, at least we have college football and a DVR. I will survive. GO UTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
