kahoo99-I am planning on the Caliman in Morgan hill this june, sorry for the delayed reply. Going to give wildflower a go too. Were you on a college team? I am definitely an amateur training on my own, but I'm having a great time doing so.

I haven't seen brokeback mountain yet. It is not out on rental, it just came out into theaters and it has won a bunch of golden globe awards.

Well it is starting to look more and more like I will be attending DMU this fall. I put my deposit in December, but am holding out for my state school, primarily because of the cost, it's 1/2 as much and that's just a lot of money. I'm excited though about DMU.

Just a little bit about me, married witht 3 kids, 5 y/o, 3 y/o, and a 3 month old. Planning on hopefully buying a house, just need to find a good area and reasonable price.

Waukee and West Des Moines are the best areas to look to buy in, as you will be able to probably sell it quicker when it is time to leave. Just my opinion I have been here for a pair of years an that would be my suggestion if you are attending DMU.

Well....I like long walks on the beach, white roses...and, oops wrong site (haha...I was just kidding)!!

Actually, I come from MN, where I have been in a serious relationship for 3 years with someone that will be attending MD school at UND. Back when I could afford it, I showed Arabian horses (now I am focusing on selling the one I own prior to school)...I like to work out, eat good food, and enjoy a glass of wine while cooking. I also enjoying exploring the outdoors and the arts. 😛 Pretty cool, eh!! And, I just watched a really good movie, it wasn't brokeback mountain, it was called The Constant Gardener is out on video/DVD already. If you all have a chance you should also rent Something The Lord Made....it is about the first operations performed on Blue Babies. Check it out! 😀

Something the lord made, is that the one with the guy practicing on the dogs to replicate the symptoms back in the 50's and kick started heart surgeries? If its the same moving i'm thinking of, then yes, damn good story.

This is in fact the movie I am speaking of...it is fantastic

homophobia?

Nope. I'm not afraid of gay people. I just don't feel like watching anal sex on the big screen. In fact, I don't even like movies with heterosexual sex in it. In addition, I generally don't like movies about infidelity. They tend to irk me pretty bad.

I love that this question was brought up because someone didn't want to see a movie. No offense to kahoo99, I'm sure it was just a "getting to know you" question. I just know I won't like some movies. For example, Hostel. Who wants to watch other people being tortured and crap? I don't find that thrilling. I won't see it based on what I read about it.

The Constant Gardner is about a drug company that does research on people in Africa (I gather that the people do not know that the drug they are being given is on trial...), and the company eventually begins to cover up the deaths of those that have died from the research....a woman gets involved and is killed and her husband pursues the case after her death...so on and so forth

what kind of advice is that??? NOT

I disagree. Damned first year advice.

Take it from me: It's better to put off studying until the absolute last second, then have an emotional episode the night before, not sleep and drink caffeinated beverages until the minute before the exam, and have spastic colon syndrome the rest of the following day.

I mean, that's how MEN do it. I'm sure that some of the girls planned ahead, but we're MEN. We do it MAN way.

(This is very sarcastic in case you missed it. Studying anatomy isn't a bad idea if you have the time.)

NOT A PRANK: For you ortho-types, This was a story in the Mpls/St Paul news earlier this month. It is a interesting story about artifical disc replacement. Dr. Bartie is a DMU Alumni and highly regarded spine surgeon in the area....if you watch the video, notice how the TV station tags him as M.D....whatever

Hooray! I just had to let everybody know that the mountains of CO did not pummel me too hard. Let me just say that skiing on the mountain was quite a rush and getting lessons is really worth the time and money. My only parting gift was a big purple bruise on my knee. Thank goodness for my helmet, which was I must say undeniably essential. Plus, for all of you workout buffs, 5 hours + a day on a mountain, is better than any workout I've ever had! I highly recommend it. I'm already planning my next trip. 🙂

Ok, so yes, DOrocksmysocks, buying a condo would be a fantastic investment for your parents, especially in the West Des Moines area. My parents bought my brother a 2-story 2 br, 1.5 bath, 1 car garage townhouse here and made $12,000 on it in about 2 years (we sold it October 2005). Prices are still climbing, so I wouldn't expect to pay less than $105,000+ for a condo/townhouse of that size and even more as you approach the mall. Mortgage would end up being $700 or so a month and depending on location there may be an association fee of at least $75/month. Utilitiies may run you around $200 for gas/electric (thanks to the new gas price hike) and around $30 for water/sanitation. For phone, cable, and internet, we're paying $100 (package deal from Mediacom). You'll be in good shape if you can split that with somebody. Good luck and welcome! 🙂

fair enough. i too didn't want to watch hostel based on what i read about it. as for actually seeing a movie, i haven't had time in months.

A word of advice...those of you who have had no prior exposure to Microbiology might want to sample a bit of that sometime, either by sitting in lectures at your undergraduate institution or by reading Clinically Oriented Micro Made Ridiculously Simple. One professor has left the department here and the misery index is at an all time high.

thanks for the heads up

Yea currently only being used at single levels and at the L5-S1 disk space from what I've read. Not sure yet on the longterm results yet of this type of surgery as obvioulsy those aren't available yet. Still a risky surgery as you have to go anterior to do it, but none the less a viable solution for some patients.

Glad you had a good time skiing.
Is it about a 10-15 min. drive from West Des Moines to the school?

I just flew into Denver today (1st Leg of my tour)....reports are 1ft+ snow today in the Mts.....FRESH POWDER!!!!I will refrain from such activities (Stupid Shder 🙁 ) and settle with hiking.

Shminger-

It would depend on how fast you drive and what part of West Des Moines you live in. Valley Junction is in the original WDM, which is further east from where I am located. That would put you in the realm of a 10 minute or so trip, but it also depends on how bad morning traffic is. From my part of WDM, the commute on 235 to the downtown area can be fairly congested in [ morning. Fortunately for us, nearly all of the road construction is finally done, so traffic moves a little smoother because there are 3 lanes and sometimes 4. I'm not sure of when classes start, so I can't tell you how the traffic is at that time. All I know is that morning traffic is clearer before 7:30 and after 9:00 and at its worst around 8:00 and 8:30. The traffic after class (as long as it's not around 5) is very sparse and usually puts me in the area of 12-15 minutes or so. As the person who is usually late to everything minus the really, really important stuff, I have to give myself an extra cushion of time. I plan to leave at least 30-45 minutes before classes in the morning. I think that 20 minutes is cutting it really close. The time is also variable if you decide to take local roads (longer distance) to avoid traffic and should save you a couple of minutes, unless everybody else has the same brilliant idea as you, which of course they usually do.

Tenacious DO-

Make sure that you check out the interesting art in DIA! There's an especially interesting and somewhat morbid mural of the world's children near the luggage carousels, as well as strange gargoyles near the doors. You'll have fun in Denver though. Green Mountain (which is a foothill) was fun to hike and certainly not treacherous unless you caught a loose rock and slipped down. I didn't do that, but I was close enough to it. Either way, be careful with your hiking. i don't know if the ER is as close or as conveniently located as it is in Vail. :meanie: 🙂 Hope you have a good trip!

So after feeling like a creep for the past few weeks looking at everyone else's posts, I've decided to introduce myself. I'm a 21 year old single (that's right ladies) male from the West suburbs of Chicago. I like sports, especially baseball (go Sox!!!), working out, boozing, going out with friends, etc. I'm pretty pumped about attending DMU next year, even though my friends keep pointing out that it is in Iowa. I kinda like Iowa anyways, and was surprised Des Moines was as big as it is. So, just thought I'd introduce myself to everyone and I look forward to meeting you all. By the way, I'm also looking into apartments (2 or 3 bedroom) so if anyone is interested (male/female/older/younger) let me know.

Dan

You know, the self-proclaimed super geniuses of DMU 2007 have a big rating...I think we should start upping ours…kick that behinds if ya know what I mean! Oh, welcome Dan.

Why so quite this week everyone? (I suppose that those still taking classes are studying....I should be right now, for Abnormal...but my interest is slowly declining)

Oh, you know, the usual reasons. School, women, sleep deprivation, etc... They all nip you in the behind.

I hope you're just talking about rating this thread ... we're not ready to undertake the task of emulating the 'super geniuses' thread - if at all.

In an effort to pad the stats of our DMU 2K10 Thread...I submit the following for you amusement:

Taco Town

aka, the latest feature at the DMU Dining Hall

Although I don't think Andy Dick is anything more than a crackhead, I did think his mtv show was funny until it got cancelled. Anyways, check out a couple of these, the drug service announcement is one of my favorites.

That was pretty good.
I would have to agree, Andy Dick=lame, his show was really funny though.

One other thing I was thinking about was electives. Has anyone thought about any of these yet? They were talking alot about the Biochem one and said you had to take it 1st year, basically right off of the bat. I couldn't seem to find anyone who had taken it to see whether or not it was worth the hassle. Anyone have any further info on this elective, or others?

Hello fellow DMUers. I'm one of those "voyeurs" that was eavesdropping on everybody (too much time as a hermit during my undergrad). Just wanted to confirm your suspiscions. Alright, I'll creep back into my cave. Can't wait to meet you all in August! If you see a lanky yankee, that's me.

P.S. Yeah, my user name is real original, but at least you'll think of me every time you open your folder on the DMU student portal (u'll c).

I talked to a DMU student who took the P.B. biochem elective his first year. He said it was tough, but he was glad he took it because it showed the real world relationship between biochem and medicine. When I asked him if I should take electives my first semester, he just said it depends what you're taking. However, he did say you have even more info thrown at you the 2nd year (so earlier electives may be better than later).

Do you have access to the portal already? Lucky....

I have an interview coming up at DMU and I would really like to start med school in the fall at DMU. I looked at interview feedback and was wondering if anyone had any advice? Will I be interviewing for the waitlist? Congrats on everyones acceptance. Thanx Adam

I shadowed a DO that does interviews at DMU (Yes, I'm an Iowan). He basically told me that the interviews were to eliminate weirdoes (No, it didn't work in my case }:0). He also advised that I keep my answers short. I suspect they get tired of rambling answers. A DMU student said they just want to see your personality. As for being waitlisted, I doubt that the seats are full yet. Don't sweat it. I think you will do well.

Yesterday (Friday) I drove down to DMU after class (@ 8) to buy a sweater. Yay for my sweater that was 20% off (or something like that). I also went to look at a condo for sale. Turns out, I don't think I can afford the mortgage payments. Anyone know of any apartments in the area of campus that would be $800 or less (2 bedroom) that would include utilities??? Or have any of you heard for "good cheap" places to live around campus??

Thanx

Hey, I took advantage of the opportunity to change names and I went from goodrain to Redneck. I just want to give everyone a heads up and let you know it's mostly an artistic thing. Mostly...

Redneck you've inspired me.

I should put up an auction on ebay to give someone the chance to change my SDN name for a year. Whatever they want. What name would you pay to give someone?

I don't think you'll get many takers. Especially when there are already a cremaster, astroglide, p00psicleSTICK, and PainlessChancre.

I'm glad I've given you inspiration - it can be hard to find some times.

I didn't think there would be many takers. There are some great names here. Can anyone think of better ones?

like...
EnemaLover
????

nevermind... this could go bad.

ok... I'm bored. I need to focus on school or something.

Misparas,

I feel as your temporary muse that I must give you my letter of resignation. Corrupting you was never my intention.

Sincerely,
Redneck

Redneck,

I sincerily apreciate the time and effort that you have dedicated these past few hours to my entertainment. I must now purge my mind of the horrors which have been presented to me. However, I hold you in no way responsible.

Thank you,
misparas

I'm not sure who has or hasn't seen this little treasure, but if you haven't, you're in for a real treat. While Mrs. Spears-Federline drives around with her baby as an alternative airbag, Mr. Federline is developing revolutionary music. You can all thank me later, but for now enjoy.

For everyone's listening and viewing pleasure, I present the one, the only Kevin Federline and PoPoZao:

A Living Legend

Did I mention how much I hate this baby making machine.

We've already been blessed with this wonderful peace of ... well, whatever it is. Thanks again.
