Wow, that's pretty cool. I have never done any road biking but would love to eventually get a road bike. I heard there is a ride that they do every year from one side of Iowa to the other. Here is the website "The registers annual great bicycle ride across Iowa".

http://www.ragbrai.org/

My girlfriend did this with her mom and some friends of the family (they're originally from Iowa), so I will confirm that it is indeed one giant party where people happen to ride bikes occasionally. The majority of people just party the entire time. They all said the experience was unbelievable (and they didn't even get to party as much as some of the others), and intend on doing it every year from here on out. If you do in fact want to do it for the actual challenge, then you will definitely not be disappointed in that respect either. It's supposed to be a very intense week long ride that will challenge most any experienced rider.

I think DMU actually sponsers a team to do it. I remember them saying something about it when i was looking into schools last year and told them about my cycling background.

From what I have heard, it seems like it would be fun.

I think it's time to get to know everyone a bit better. What do DMUers Class of 2010 do for fun out there? I enjoy working hard, but I love to have a good time. I love sports, working out, drinking, and spending as much of my free time as possible having a good time. Life is meant to be enjoyed. I'm a pretty big movie buff as well, and I love a good restaurant, so if anyone knows some good local ones around town, please let me know. Speaking of, are there any breweries in Des Moines??? I love a good microbrewery. Just trying to create some conversation and hopefully bring out some of the voyeurs who likely frequent this thread, but never reply.

Sounds like we got a lot in common. I like working out, playing sports, drinking and messing with digi camera and video camera, as well as photo shopping the pictures and editing the video. I was so stoked to see the nice gym and B-Ball court at DMU. I love me a fine dark beer.

If that's the case, Rain, I expect many good brews from you in the future. Trust me, I was just as pumped about the nice gym as you were. It wasn't a deciding factory by any means, but I was really let down by Kirksville's gym (in case you saw it). I don't even expect a lot of nice stuff like what DMU carries, but KCOM had so very little to offer as far as a gym goes. If I'm going to be studying as much as I intend on studying, then I need a good workout (and a good beer) to blow off a bit of stress.

I too like to work out, hike, bike, play music, throw down a brew or three, spend time with my wife and kids, watch sports, eat good food.
I'll be moving out from san francisco i guess mid june maybe.

By the way, in case anyone hasn't seen it, here is an absolutely hilarious rap video from SNL:

The Chronic of Narnia

Enjoy!

Sweet link...I saw the video on SNL and just about fell off the couch....Wait maybe that was the vicodin.....Wait maybe I should also mention I just had shlder surgery (Arm wrestling injury - it may cut my pro career short, so I guess I will have to go with my fall back plan --> Med Skool)

Please pass on any other cool, funny, thought provoking links so I can update my Blog. Thanx

Hey FS-Pro-
I really like the song you have your "myspace" page... Pinback's Fortress. I have never heard of Pinback before. I will definitely check them out.

Ya they're not real big, exept in the San Diego area. They are very good though if you are into indie rock. I recommend "Summer of Abadon(sp)," "Blue Screen Life," and "Offcell-EP." All of those are good.

Ok, well, because being social is always good and because we'll probably have to see each other regularly in shorts, hello to my fellow 2MX'ers! (See, it's still a cool number.) Like everybody here, I am absolutely ecstatic about starting school this fall. I'm not overly excited about coming here, because well, I'm already here in WDM. (I do like it here a lot though, except there's no arcade/laser tag or H&M.)

To keep things short and sweet, I am from a soon-to-be west 'burb of Chicago. I worked in biotechnology for a little bit and am currently working on my MPH at DMU. I love dancing, pilates, lifting weights, studying different cultures and languages (and speaking Spanish when I can), going to movies, sampling different restaurants, exploring, etc. etc. My boyfriend and I are always on the go, so I think I can definitely offer my .02 about different restaurants and shopping here, but sadly, I can't say much about dancing, yet. I'll take suggestions though. Anyways, I think that this thread is a wonderful appetizer to orientation and it sounds like we do have quite a fun class. I am looking forward to meeting everybody, and I hope everybody has a wonderful and safe holiday!

Felicitaciones y Bienvenida Megustamaiz! I would love to practice Spanish! How do you like the MPH program? I am currently enrolled an MPH program, but I think that I am going to settle for a certificate in Public Health and transfer my credits to DMU and finish the MPH up there. Do you like the program? Any insight would be great. Also, are you in an apartment in WDM, how are the apartments out there and what's the "commute" like to school?

Does anyone in DMU class of 2010 currently work in healthcare? Nurse, Pharmacy, Respiratory??

so what's the restaurant scene in des moines like? are there cool restaurants/coffee shops aside from chain stuff. i noticed there were a few microbrews, which seems promising. as a vegetarian, would it be really hard for me to eat out?

also, outdoorsy stuff questions. it looks like biking is definitely a go, but what about hiking? also, do people do winter sports like cross country skiing and snowshoeing. dh and i are trying to get into snowsnoeing, and it'd be cool to be able to do that if we move to des moines. i know the snow's not lacking. 🙂

dunno for sure. i made a deposit, and the financial considerations at dmu are the most favorable. also, i am sort of granola and like the holistic/preventative care type of stuff, and dmu is a good fit for that. i know a lot of dmu students aren't into that, but it looks like dmu makes that type of study possible. so, it's a strong possibility but not 100% right now. yeah, i'm indecisive. 🙂

I'm currently an Orthopedic PA.

I work as a Patient Assistant at a Free Health Clinic in K.C. Basically I do a lot of the preliminary things before patients are seen by the doctor... I love it 'cause I only really have certification as a C.N.A. in a completely different state and they let me do all sorts of crazy/cool things that I would never get to experience anywhere else. I love free clinics... 😀

Example: This last Wednesday I assisted the FP physician in removing genital warts from a patient with HPV. Kinda weird, yet cool at the same time, feeling like I'm doing something useful instead of getting in the way...

Wow, we had temps in the 70's for Christmas weekend and they will continue throughout the week! In fact, it is going to get up to about 78 today! I guess I better enjoy this before next winter in Des Moines.

Came across this video, and I figured it might entertain at least a few of my fellow Class of 2010 DMUers. I think we're potentially looking at either the reincarnation of the Nortorious BIG or the next David Hasselhoff (sp?...who cares).

Anyways, enjoy. I'll be posting any other funny videos/pictures I see along the way.

I know that classes begin on August 14th. But when is the white coat? Orientation? We are planning a trip toward the end of July...Good idea or bad? Can anybody help? When do I need to be there. Thanks. 👍

jbone,
I'd call the school. But, from what I've noticed looking at other schools' schedules all the orientation things are done within one week of school starting. So If you don't carry too far over into august I bet you'll be fine.

Electric,
That was weird. Funny but weird. I hope you didn't waste too much time digging that up.

Everyone,
Has anything arrived by mail from the school? I'm currently away from my mailbox and am curious.

Haha...Yeah, on second thought it was a bit creepy/weird, but at the time I laughed. Trust me, I didn't spend anytime looking it up. There are a couple websites I browse at work when I'm bored, so I just happened to come across. I'm really just trying to incite a little humor on the board, and hopefully some others post funny pics/videos/jokes that they come across. Wow, am I seriously this bored???

JBone-

Nothing in the mail. Nice avatar....it actually reminds me of a cat I once owned. To make a long story short, my childhood cat was being raped by a stray cat on a regular basis. It was awkward to say the least.

I have been a Physical Therapist working in Mpls/St Paul.

Keep sending the Sweet Links 😀

On a regular basis? Poor thing. Sorry to bring up bad/awkward memories. Good times. 👍

The lease of the apartment where I am currently living ends in mid-July. So, I think that is when I will be moving.

mine expires end of july, so i wouldn't want to move before then. i've decided to quit my job in the end of june, so i'll have five to six weeks off before school starts. i'm so excited!!

That sounds nice! Do you have any vacation plans to celebrate quitting your job? Are you 100% sure about DMU or are you still considering OU?

I'm trying to figure that out myself. I finish school in mid may. I'm thinking early July would be good. Enough time to move in and get settled, while also exploring all the ways to have fun for later in the school year.

Denstination Des Moines = Mid July

Hello!

To answer your questions:

MPH program--Well, I just finished my first three courses for the MPH program, and my experiences so far have been good. One great thing is that courses are flexible. With some courses you can choose between a face-to-face or online format. Coursework is also manageable but not a cakewalk by any means, especially for online courses. Instructors are great and helpful, but most of them are not full-time.

Apartments--I can't give you any help with apartments in WDM. From what I understand, they are pretty expensive. If possible purchasing a townhome would be a .

Commute--The commute isn't too bad. You can pretty much try to gauge traffic and then determine a travel route. I-235 can be a terror in the morning, but it beats the traffic in the Chicago area. You may also opt to take Grand all the way to school, which shaves off at least 5 minutes. It all depends on where you're leaving from. I would leave at least 30 minutes before school starts to be safe. The commute in the evening usually takes me 15 minutes or less, and I live on the far west side of WDM.

Hope this helps!!

Hello!

Ok, well, restaurants here range from the ethnically eclectic to the very mainstream/cookie cutter eateries to everything in between. So, yes, I would say that in my opinion, there are definitely lots of cool restaurants, although, the authentic Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants are lacking. Ok, I am a hardcore carnivore, but even as a vegetarian, I don't think that you'll have too much of a problem finding suitable cuisine around here. Many restaurants offer meatless dishes. It's just a matter of scanning the menu and exploring. Here are some of my favorite places:

Ethnic/unique: Nut Pob (Thai, S. DSM), Aguila Real (Mexican, WDM), China Chef (great cheap lunch, S. DSM), China Cafe (great cheap lunch, Johnston), House of Hunan (good take-out/delivery, WDM), Ohana (Japanese, WDM), Mezzodi's (Italian, S. DSM), Cosi Cucina (Italian, Urbandale), Waterfront (seafood, best clam chowder, WDM), Felix and Oscar's (delicious deep dish pizza, N. DSM), 801 Steakhouse (pricey but delicious, DT DSM), Noodle Zoo (make your own noodle dish plus sandwiches, WDM), Stella's (50's diner with best malts, Urbandale)

Chains: Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, Buzzard Billy's, Cucina Brava Italiana, Granite City, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel, Rock Bottom Brewery, Baker's Square, Panera, Panchero's

The list of restaurants goes on and on, and I still have many, many more restaurants on my list that I have yet to try. You may also consider picking up a city guide at the grocery store for more options.

As for coffee shops, there are plenty of non-chain ones that I always drive past and forget. It is my goal to actually refuse Starbuck's for one of these places. It's been hard for me to find a shop that compares to the Mill in Lincoln, NE.

It seems like there are lots of trails that you would be able to hike, but I can't give you very much info about the outdoor winter activities. You may have to travel a little further north in Iowa but I don't think you'll find anything near Colorado quality. That may be something worth Googling and then exploring.

Hope I could be of some help!

Any breweries other than Rock Bottom?? Any really good ones?

There are a couple of other breweries: Granite City (Clive), Court Avenue (DT DSM), and Raccoon River (DSM). I'm more of a foo foo fruity drink person, but the beer drinkers around me also seem to approve of the first 2 places. The first is almost exactly like Rock Bottom, and the second is more of a pub atmosphere with lots of live blues music. I have no experience with the last place. There are also other Iowan breweries that might meet your fancy within a 2 hour drive.

Has anyone else filled out their entrance interview on the DMU website? It's the form necessary to receive loans. It asks for a school address, so I wasn't sure if I should just hold off on it, or what.

Any help would be great.

I don't think you need to do that until right before your loans get dispersed. It takes like two seconds, so I wouldn't worry about it. I'm probably going to do it in June or something like that.

For close to Des Moines outdoor winter activities there's skiing/tubing in Montezuma and Boone. Also, Sleepy Hollow sports park (Des Moines) has tubing all winter. They all make snow when it's scarce. Skiing here is mostly like bunny hill stuff in Colorado, but you can still have plenty of fun. (My wife's cousin does competetive X-Games type ski-jumping in Boone, so they must have decent runs.)

There's decent hiking relatively close to Des Moines also. Ledges State Park, near Boone (~40minutes away) is nice and there are plenty of other parks close to DM.

Whoa, Tenacious DO,

I think that we were interview buddies. Did you interview on October 20th? There was a hodgepodge of people that day, including like 4 or 5 people from Minnesota and then a pair of girls who went to high school together. I'm one of those hs reunion girls, perhaps the more hyper of the two, or rather the really petite one with the darker hair. Anywho, big congrats!
