The DMU portal does suck. Tried to change my password to no avail. And getting around the site sucked, but it's new so...oh well. Getting excited. Just got my window decal today in the mail. Yea baby!
Getting excited for DMU.....

Easy Tiger...I too was upset about the user-un-friendly password... in fact I trashed my keyboard...maybe you saw the video (I only speak Auf Deutsch when I am pissed)...anywho the Help Desk indicated that we would be able to change our passwords after we get our new computers this summer.

Sorry, I have been wondering what it is like to "bump" a thread. As expected, there is very little thrill involved. I know you were wondering. Ok, back to work.

I just got my DMU window sticker for my car and thought I should join so I could meet some of my fellow classmates. My name is Jenny and I am from Minnesota. I took the year off to relax before medical school, if you call working retail in the largest mall in america relaxing. If you cannot tell by my user name, I love to recycle and enjoy nature. 😀 I cannot wait for school to start in the fall.

Hi! I've been reading these for a while, so I figured it was time for me to finally post something. My name is Ryan and I'm from Minnesota currently finishing undergrad in Nebraska. I recently deposited at DMU and I'm very excited to start school next year! I look forward to meeting everyone soon!

Ryan
DMU Class of 2010!!!

Welcome Jenny and Ryan! Glad to see you guys joining the ranks of posters.

Jenny, I love the username and avatar!

I freakin hate trees. 😡 They make me angry!

I always said I would never put in window sticker on my car, but I did. What I dork I am. I totally sat in my trunk (I have a hatchback) and made sure that the sticker was perfect. I am a total nerd. In addition, I must also say that I called the school in a frantic rage about the horrible password. The guy that answered sent me an e-mail (on my dmu account of course) about how we won't be able to change them until we are on campus with our computers, and that he was sorry about any trouble it may cause me. I can actually remember the password now though, so I am a bit happier.

I also noticed that on the portal they put up the medical records/physical stuff. They are going to take one look at my medical history and think that I am a walking train wreck!! I own horses and looking back on it, boy they have injured me a lot!

Hello to all you folks from MN!!!! Where abouts are you from???

Yeah, the password is horrible...but I have mine memorized, too. I got my window decal in the mail yesterday. DMU seems to really put a lot of effort into making their future students feel wanted...I like that.

welcome to the newbies!
We speak for the trees

Ryan,

where in NE are you doing UG. At UNL? Just curious. I'm currently in Norfolk, and will be attending DMU as well. Did my undergrad at UNL and Union College.

Welcome!

I am a class of 2008 DMU student looking for a roommate starting August 15 2006. I live 3.0 mile from the campus on a well plowed snow route (it really doesnt snow that much here in Iowa). I have own a 3 bedroom house in Valley junction just 3 blocks from the farmers market. Rent will be 550.00 per month and includes utilities, wireless internet, washer and dryer, central air, an office and security system. I also have 2 dogs. You can E-mail me at [email protected] if interested...

Good to hear that we have more representatives from the MN. Tough week around here with the loss of Puck 🙁 ....I hale from Woodbury, but I am originally from Up-State (E. Grand Forks). How about all-y'all?

Speaking of computers, has anyone heard any definite information as to what make/model we'll be receiving come August? I emailed Risa earlier tonight to confirm that they received my second payment for the seat deposit and went ahead and slipped in a quick question regarding the computer. I'm certain it will be a good computer (especially compared to this pile I'm typing on right now), I'm just curious and look forward to having a "real" computer.

Also, I recently read the book Hot Lights, Cold Steel, and I have to recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it. It's a fairly well written book with a lot of heart and insight into the life of a surgical resident. Great book that can serve to remind us why we're all working so hard to reach these goals.

I has been a tough week without Puck. 🙁 I am from the wonderful city of Minneapolis, and I am ready to move to a smaller metro area. I want to practice small town medicine. I am glad that there will be a group of us from MN.

hello all,

My name is Matt and I will more than likely see everyone in august. I am from Corvallis, Oregon (oregon state university). I'm just waiting to here from OHSU before my decision is finalized to go to DMU. Look forward to meeting you all. 😉

I bought my boyfriend Hot Lights, Cold Steel as well as another one called Complications for part of a gift recently. He said that both of the books were fantastic. I would also personally recommend Stiff to anyone along with The Great Influenza if anyone is interested in reading for entertainment before classes start in August, both books that I have recently read. Good stuff, good stuff.

I mentioned this before, in a thread long, long ago, but I am from New Prague. It is about 30 miles southwest of Burnsville, MN. Small town, lots-o-bars...and yeah.

Just realized I won't have email for the next week and will be going through some major SDN withdrawals. Anyways, to those of you still in school have an awesome spring break (don't party too much) and I'll try to catch up with all the happenings in about a week.

😳 Sadly, I've been addicted since June of last year. For those of you who haven't been affected yet, put SDN on some sort of security block. RUN AWAY FAST AND DON'T LOOK BACK. It's really getting bad. I'm even on the threshold of donating. 😱

For all my Ute pals on here, enjoy the sports dominance over BYU while it lasts. Once I graduate the curse will be lifted.

For everyone else... sorry I just watch a crappy basketball game.

Oh yeah, I'm addicted to SDN as well. We need to form a support group in Iowa to ween ourselves.

We'll have to watch the game to gether this year. I actually read an article that listed BYU and Utah as 2 teams which could break into a BCS game this coming year.

This is how it has been lately, I agree.

In case any MN'ers were curious, I'm from Winona, about 100 miles SE of the Twin Cities. Small town, lotsa bars, that's about it. My girlfriend (soon to be fiancee if I can find some damn $$$) is from Shoreview, MN. My good friend/roommate for three years of college also hails from the 'Wood Tenacious.

I'm doing my undergrad at Creighton. I think someone else asked what part of Minnesota I'm from. My hometown in Anoka (NW of the Twin Cities).

It's been suggested to me, by a friend in the class of 2008, that we'll be the first class to get Gateway CX200 series convertible laptops. This might be supported by the corporate purchase pricing listing of these boxes on the DMU portal.

They are pretty darn neat, but weigh an incredible 6.5+# WITHOUT a battery and near 10# with the default 8-cell. Of course, an upside is that you can frag Quake 4 baddies at a respectable framerate on the CX200's. 🙂

Hopefully we'll be able to customize these bad boys. That would definitely be important to me.

That would be awesome!! I've been pretty jealous of some of my pals who already sit in class with their tablet/laptop. They are rad... you take notes right on powerpoints or whatever. Quake 4's not that bad either. We'll see.

Hardware customization (pre-delivery) is a big not-gonna-happen. DMU will own and service ~240 of these things, just for our class and some profs, for four years minimum. Whitebread homogeneity will be a must for any such equipment. When they die (and some of them will), DMU will have plenty of stock parts to slide in.

I'm sure we can slap on whatever software we wish. But, there's no backup policy/service, at least that my class of 2008 source has heard of. If you crash your install, it gets wiped and restored. So, I imagine we'll all have decent motivation to keep our laptops free of too much crap.

Customizations like bigger screens, more memory, bigger hard drive, faster processor won't be allowed? I know when I did this for PA school, they atleast let you update those things while the base model remained the same. Eventually what some students said, is that, we'll take responsibility for the laptop and IT had no more responsibility towards anything that went wrong with it.

Of course that's back when the IT department thought Windows ME was the bomb, well they were right it was a bomb.

I just turned in my deposit to DMU on Monday! I currently live in West Des Moines and work for the State Medical Examiner as an Autopsy Tech. Des Moines is a great place and you all will love living here. It really is a lot better then most people think it is.

Does anyone know how the neighborhood is around the fourseasons apartments?
3003 Woodland Ave.

I'm seriously considering moving in there, as long as it's not a crime ridden area or anything.

I was told that during orientation the laptops are handed over preconfigured to you, including network and portal logon/passes. Sounds like we'll get what we're handed. Of course I doubt that many matriculants ask about upgrades.

The basic config's I've seen all have no video, hardrive, RAM or DVD burner upgrades and are 1.5GHz Pentium M's. They have 40GB 5400rpm drives, 512MB RAM and a CD burner/DVD reader combo. It looks like the ATI Radeon X600 upgrade is around $100, 8x DVD writer combo is cheap and a 80GB 5400rpm adds less than $50. All sound like good deals if we can get 'em.

I'll ask the DMU tech guys about the possibility of pre-delivery upgrades and get back to the group.

That's in the Woodland Heights neighborhood. They've got their own association that could give you any info you want. The crime rate (burglary anyway) has been generally low in that last year.

East of 31st is mostly older neighborhood commercial property and apartments mixed with lower-mid to middle class houses. Just across 31st to the west is a pretty nice middle class area. Just to the west of that between 42nd and 54th is roughly upper middle class by comparison. Anything south of Grand between 30th and 54th is usually pretty high end property.

Most of the areas to be worried about are north of I-235 to the west of 5th Ave and north of University. "The farther west you go the "better," is a decent rough rule of thumb concerning neighborhoods west of the Des Moines river.

Way to jump right in and be team player! Thanks for the info!

How's everyone's bracket doing? Mine sucks.

I can't beleive I didn't pick Montana. I knew they'd win. I also can't beleive I pick Seton Hall to make it to the 3rd round.

I didn't pick Utah St. and I'm feeling the upset later tonight. We'll see.

I need Indiana to win....and with that comment, they just took the lead by 1. Finally. Other than that, I'm doing alright, but as any veteran of March Madness knows, it doesn't mean squat at this point. My brackets always seem to fall apart at some point, it's just a matter of when. I was browsing another forum related to my school's basketball team, and I came across the odds of correctly choosing every single game in the tournament. I believe it was 9.22 quintillion to 1, or 1 in 9,220,000,000,000,000,000. That's unfreakingbelievable. No wonder websites like www.SI.com can offer a million dollars to whomever correctly guesses all 63 games.

Anyways, good luck to everyone. Last year I won big money, but I don't forsee that in my future this year.

I am a DO '09 and live at the Four Seasons Apts. I have been really pleased. The managers are very good at keeping things nice and keeping the peace. Plus it has the closest indoor pool to school. 🙂 The neighborhood is nice and the property adjoins a middle school with a track and basketball court (for when it's too nice to be in the Wellness center). However, several of my class mates think that the three block walk is "too far". If that sounds like you maybe Windsor Terrace or 3000 Grand is more your style. 🙂

Good job Montana, GWU, and Wisc. Milwaukee 👍 😉
My bracet is upset heavy. Livin on the edge.

My bracket is doin' alright. We'll see how the games go today, though. How the hell do you guys pick Utah State over Washington?? I have Wash getting to the Sweet 16. The game of the day...Arizona, baby. Adams is back from his DUI...time to kick some @ss!

Sounds awesome! That's where I'll be this fall. I walk over 10 blocks to school now, so three blocks is nothing. Thanks for the info!
