From now on, instead of venting on SDN, I'll just crank up the 360 and take out some noobs like soundman, dj, jamers, bonesaw, and misparas and anyone else who wants some. Seriously though, I apologize for probably starting all of this crap. Let's just play some Halo 3 and makeup.

watch out for my frags though baby, don't be skared:laugh:

Just read the email, so I couldn't resist the opportunity to respond. I personally believe that the DMU 2010 thread has attracted potential candidates if anything at all. Everyone that posts in here has nothing but wonderful things to say about the school, and we're constantly helping to answer future applicants' questions.

Now just because someone read through this thread and didn't "get" the humor, that doesn't negate what occurs on here on a regular basis.

I'm all for professionalism, but I'm honestly starting to fear that everyone is setting themselves up for a huge glass of disappointment when they hit the real world. Life isn't lived within the confines of a friendly school where there are clearly defined rules, regulations, and consequences. Rotations, residency, and eventually career will most certainly shock the hell out of quite a few people. Especially if they're constantly getting their undies in a bunch like so many seem to be.

Life is meant to be enjoyed not feared. If you're constantly tip-toeing through life, then maybe things need to be re-evaluated. Please don't be so quick to judge if you don't even know half the story.

I love DMU, I love what I'm doing, and I constantly look forward to what lies ahead. I think our class is without a doubt one of the hardest working that has come through here (hence the averages), and I'm quite certain that 2nd year won't swamp us. If I recall, when we first started this year 2nd years were telling us how difficult it gets at certain points. Well guess what, it wasn't that bad, we made it, and I'm quite certain that the next "most difficult thing in the world" won't be so bad either.

God, I could go on and on, but I'm willing to bet that 75% of you have either stopped reading at this point or simply skimmed through......and I can't blame you.

Good luck to everyone over the next month or so.

You can vent, vent away. Advice would be to try not to use specifics, including people descriptions etc.

Good luck, guys!

One more week of rotations!!!!!!!!!!! Then I'm outee 5000.

babyruth,

The only thing i gotta say is 👍 👍 👍 Location. Hey, get that creeping kid for my new movie, The Creeping Kid.

Ciao!

I tried to post this before but they decided to do work on SDN the minute I was submitting it.

To say that our thread has done nothing but cause harm is to admit that one has not read the entire thread (there are two parts). Not to mention the fact that jbone, soundman, dj (just to name a few) have done nothing but support DMU on and off SDN. If it were not for them, many of the people on the fence about this school never would have attended here. Don't believe me, the DMU 2011 thread is just around the corner, ask them yourself.
Whats more, all we did was come on a forum to blow off steam. Is this worse than what others have done in the past through alcohol and various other means? In addition, is not what we did the same as those who write opinionated articles? And, like those articles, can one not simply click away and choose not to read or believe what we have written? I know a few of you will respond to that with: the people that come on here are impressionable. I answer back: most are applying to medical school or have already gotten accepted, the last time I checked that took some individual thought and decision making processes (these are not children we are talking about, these are young adults that can make up their own minds).
But, since a few have, once again, decided the fate of the many, I will no longer write on SDN. Good bye and I hope, for your own fate, that some of you realize life needs a sense of humor.

For the sake of all of us Jamers, I hope your retirement from SDN is a short one...

Anyone care to temporarily donate their body to me for some full-body treatments? I haven't done a single one... I promise I'll make you feel good 😉 I'll gladly lone you my self in return!

I'm always down for a good full body. You know where I will be... 229 (as long as it is after noon, otherwise I will be sleeping. You can smell us from down the hall.

Hey guys,

Just a quick question regarding something non-controversial (j/k) that I thought someone was discussing early in the year; Did any of you upgrade the RAM for your school-issued laptop??

I read an article that said getting some extra RAM for your computer can make it work a lot less hard & can actually prolong the life of your computer. If any of you have done this, how much RAM & how much $$ is it going to cost me?

What about installation?? I can take apart a small engine & put it back together, but am scared to death to do anything to a computer myself. Is this something that the SEC Help Desk people would do for you? Thanks all.

I did it. For details, I will defer to soundman.

BTW, thank you Jamers. I truly hope you don't stop posting because of some hyperreactive dork. Just keep the good posts comming and I'll watch what I post a little better.

Krazy,

Nice off topic discussion to get things away from the uptightedness of the "e-mail".

I upgraded my RAM this year, fairly easily. Just make sure you get the right size and all that. Also I would always get the same size as what is currently in there, say it's 512MB I would get another 512 to total 1 GB. OR if you want more than that, I would get two 1GB sticks, (this is what I have). Running them in pairs, increases the speed and efficiency in which the memory is used. Ours came with one stick of 512.

DMU IT department and the original installers load lots of programs that we don't really need all the time on the computer. I don't know how many programs I've disabled so they don't start on boot up, but it's a lot.

Also, hibernate is a great feature. Use it, makes boot up much faster. I have some issues with the hibernate feature often, so it's always a roll of the dice whether it's going to work or not.

Oh yea, I believe the IT help desk will even install your memory for you for no charge, or come by 229 like FS said, and I'll do it. I have a Leatherman tool!!

I did exactly what SOUNDMAN recommends: I bought a 512MB RAM stick from newegg.com. Total cost with shipping was a whopping $35. Pretty good deal if you ask me. The help desk installed it for me and I noticed an instant change in performance, especially start-ups.

Here is the model that I ordered - it's still working just fine for me, about 2 months later:

I heard a rumor from someone at IT that they were going to be adding RAM to everyone's computer this spring or summer.

They weren't sure about it... but they said that it is being discussed.

I'm going to hold out just a bit longer.

They can just take it off my tuition, since I already did it.

Probably the wrong time for this...
But I don't get neuro. Someone please tell me that this will make sense to me anytime soon!!! I'm so confused. :scared: 😕 😕

BTW, to those of you who don't know already, #3 is now on the way. Yea, I know...:scared:
Now back to neuro...I love it.

You know me, I'd get a review book....muhahahaha.

I'm using HY neuroanatomy for it atm, and it's had everything in it basically. First aid has some nice simplified things that provide a nice base. I've just looked at notes, no notepool or anything yet, so I'm probably behind you aways, knowing how you are probably caught up.😍 😍

Congrats! but what the heck is in the water. That's 3 of you guys in like a 6 week span.

I actually heard it from the person in charge that the "memory" issue was being discussed.......but that was a few months ago......I think if it was going to happen, they would have told us by now.

Congrats! but what the heck is in the water. That's 3 of you guys in like a 6 week span.

Tell me about it. I'm going to start a fund raiser so we can feed them. Yes, totally NOT a planned issue but what can you do? Roll with the punches.

Congrats jbone!!

When is the due date?

If all goes well, our 1st should be due around December 20th.

WTH?????????????????????? LOL!! Congrats little buddy.
Wow, things are really kickin here at DMU.
(Probably in November...we find out for sure on Wed)

A word of advice, try to keep them at least 2 years apart. Not 1 year like me. It's suicidal.

I don't know any specifics about the e-mail you guys were talking about earlier, but just to show some support for the 2010 thread I'll say that you guys have most definitely been instrumental in both me and my wife's decision to attend. You guys go out of your way to show prospective students how great DMU really is and the administration should praise you for that. This is your thread. If someone doesn't like it, then they don't have to participate in the fun. I look forward to venting about school in the 2011 thread and hope you keep doing the same as well. It's refreshing to see some real emotion come out of DMU students.

Also, Jamers, come back.

Geez you guys must not be busy enough! I couldn't imagine balancing school and kids at the same time. I'm burned out enough as it is...

Nothing but respect for those of you who can do both. Congratulations!

Thanks Boner! Really appreciate that comment- glad to hear that you weren't scared off...

Ladies and Putamen-

There are officially 31 days of school left. One month to go!

That is all; carry-on with the baby-making, or whatever else you were doing 🙂 .

Hey Soundman or anyone for that matter. 😀 I'm a class of 2011er...just curious of your opinion since you seem to be big into the review books. What review books for 1st year courses have you liked and also went well with the DMU curriculum? Thanks!

PS...I've loved your class's thread. It brings validity to the amazing interview day it seems everyone has there...its like a whole med school full of REAL people! Amazing concept

I could use that magic right about now!

Well, I've purchased 3:

First Aid (2007) - almost everyone will tell you this is a must, for board prep and to use/annotate while you're taking classes. Many say that if you know this book inside and out, you will do well on Step I. I'll let you know when I get that far...

BRS Path - buy this book when you start Path. It sums up hundreds of pages of class notes + charts into 10-15 page chapters. It really helped me get the big picture, and had tests at the end of each chapter to help me evaluate my understanding of the material. I used this a lot and I think I did better in the class because of it.

High Yield Neuro - So far this book has been a good buy for me; it has CT/MRIs and several mini brain atlas figures. Again, this is condensed into chapters 10 pgs or less in length. I'm using class notes with this; when I get burned out from notes, I'll switch to HY and just focus on the "important stuff." Supposedly everything you would be tested on (in Neuro) for Step I is in this book (from talking to 3rd + 4th year students). Take that for what it's worth.

Just remember that professors don't test on material from BRS or HY, they test from their notes. So don't make the mistake of just looking at a review book and nothing else. Take the time to at least look through their stuff and make sure you haven't missed some obscure fact they might get you on.

Above all, don't buy anything until you actually start classes! And make sure to talk to your big sib and ask their advice too.

*$0.02 from a lowly first year. Carry on*

Grandma gave you guys a little present today

yea, but she screwed it up. My score is all wrong! Is that really how many I got right? I can count that on one hand and a toe.

Rapid interpretation of EKG's
******Microbiology made ridiculously easy *******

I use First aid, I got the 2005 edition because it is systems based so it follows our classes fairly accurately, but I think I have the 2006 systems based edition as well (imagine that). It's a must, not necessarily to learn from but to annotate. I annotated Immunology after I finished and some biochemistry.

Rapid Review of Pathology or BRS path: of course I have both. I think for me BRS path didn't have "enough". I actually read the Robbins book, big one for path, and annotated some RR path.

Micro simple: enough said. Must have

BRS Physiology: Good book.

Rapid EKG's but not for first year necessarily but very helpful for heart physiology and EKG stuff.

NY neuroanatomy has worked it's magic for me. THanks to DJ's grandma.

There are plenty of review books...most of them are good, although not all are popular. Early on in your year you need to make the decision of making the 'grades' or preparing for the boards...because they are entirely two different things. You can completely understand a particular subject (board prep) and yet score way below average on your tests at DMU...because our exams are very specific on details for the most part, you are not likely to find these anywhere else, except in notepool/class notes. Its just something that you have to put up with to move on with your courses. Just read over notepool couple times and you'll do well. The real learning for most people comes from excellent texts and review books.

More importantly, keep in mind that these are 'review' books...get to know the good texts at library for reference...and at last, get to know what works for YOU.

Couldn't agree more. Great post-

Some people like myself and others I know for whatever reason get absolutely nothing out of sitting down and reading a textbook. I haven't touched one textbook since coming to medical school and don't plan to next year either ( except for First Aid etc.) I am a person who has to study my own notes to get the concept and so for me the way I study for boards is to try and have the material down cold when test time rolls around so that it won't be a mad scramble next year come board time to try and relearn all the material again...... like the abover poster said its all about what works for the individual.

Thanks for the great feedback! 👍

Also, are you guys using the FA COMLEX or USMLE? Or both books?
I think I'll take both boards. Curious if there was a preference between these books.

Good luck to you all as your 1st year winds down...or up as the case may be!!

USMLE, more biochem and stats. COMLEX I'll just review OMM for a couple weeks and hit more questions. I'll do USMLE before COMLEX.

A few of us will be getting together to do some full body action and practice for the upcomming practical. Anyone game? The more bodies the better. We even need some second/third/fourth years etc. Should be fun. Saturday afternoon?

What Rocks: Only 26 days left

What Sucks: The Packers used their 1st round selection on a DT that played less that HALF of his senior season. WTF!?

I'm down for OMM practice and some full body action (not that kind jbone) any time this week. My practical is Tuesday at 3. Peace out-

I'll be here all day tomorrow and the rest of the week. Let me know when and we'll hook it up.

Why do i have nooooooooooo motivation. I know it's gonna bit me in the butt next week. I'm 25+ lectures behind and that still won't get me going. Who's with me???

Amen FS; I haven't even looked at Phys or PD since the last respective tests. I have the OMM practical on Tuesday and that's it for this week. This warm weather sucks at motivating me to do any studying at all... The week of May 14th-18th should be fun. I hope I catch up by then-

Ya, with my PBL anatomy elective I have 4 tests that week. And how am I preparing for that week... watching the basketball playoffs.
