DMU-COM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi Prions,
$12/day? Yeah, I read one of your previous posting about this. You must have traveled during the least popular season to travel to Iowa!! Even priceline.com isn't going for anything less than $30/day. My bid was $30/day at priceline.com and was rejected. I'm over 25. I hope I get lucky like you.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to DMU interview.

Yeah, I picked the car up on Thursday night and returned it less than 24 hours later. Maybe it's more expensive now because the holiday season is in full swing. It was pretty darn cheap . . . I was kinda surprised! I used http://www.carrentals.com/.

:luck:Good Luck on your interview. Also, the interview feedback on SDN was SUPER helpful for DMU. I'm sure you've checked it out, but just in case you hadn't. 😉 I pretty much got all the questions that were listed on the feedback . . . no surprises!

Practice the questions you know they are going to ask with your hubby. For those unknowns just answer from your heart. If you have any practical experience such as shadowing, etc talk about that as much as possible. Show how much you enjoyed it and really want to be a DOctor 😀

Also keep in mind that you are re-taking the MCAT, YOU WILL DO BETTER ON IT and you will get in next year!

Best Of Luck

Did anyone that interviewed on 11/15 or 11/16 hear anything yet? :scared:

Good Luck to everyone waiting to hear from DMU! :luck:

Hi Prions, I interviewed with you and found out today that I was accepted - I answered your PM. I am so incredibly relieved that I have my first acceptance. I loved DMU - only the Northwest Track at Western would turn my head as I would get back to the NW sooner but I haven't been offered an interview yet.

hey guys
my interview is jan 25
im just worried i see a lot of people getting accepted (congrats to all)
do they still have spots? lol

I withdrew my acceptance last week so they have at least one more. 😉 I'm sure that they will have a lot more spots opening after Dec. 14th when deposits are due and people are forced to make decisions between schools. Don't worry! There are a lot of SDNers that got into their schools after January.

Hey guys just heard back today.

I got Alternate Listed.....🙁

I can't believe this. My interviewers loved me...and when I called and asked why they said it was my 3.2 science gpa (3.6 overall). I don't get it, shouldn't my above average mcat (30 -11PS 11BS 8VR) make up for that?

Man I am so afraid now about NSU. I just had my interview there last week and am worried they're gonna waitlist me or worse yet, reject me b/c of that 3.2 science gpa.

Mannn...I'm so frustrated...i mean if that 3.2 science gpa is a problem why invite me in the first place. I dished out nearly 800 dollars in expenses b/c of that trip (coming from canada). Unbelievable...they knew they were gonna give me an alternate list spot from the beginning..cause even Jamie said my interview went great so its not my bias...both interviewers loved me...we had such a good rapport.

Anyways just wanted to vent....arghhh

I suspect you will be accepted to Nova. They love the non-science GPA.

Speaking of those deposits, the the date is fast approaching. Do all the schools have a large deposit this early? DMU is my only acceptance so far, but I had hoped to hold out for another school. I realy like DMU, but it remains a close second. Well, as much as the application process has cost so far, what is another $500 flushed down the drain.

You know what? One of SDN members here was wait listed partly for not having biochem, having had taken 2-3 classes at a time among a couple of other things. I think this info is all there even before the interview. Yet, DMU decided to still interview them and use the above reasons as to the waitlisted status.

Aww, no DMU for you? =(

No, it was a tough decision, but I decided on my state school for financial (cheaper tuition and scholarships) and family reasons.

From your sig, it looks like you have a decision to make yourself... 😛
Are you leaning more toward any one of the three? Those are all great schools.

Heh, afraid not! I'm still waiting to hear back from a few, including my state school. At that time, I suppose I'll become a bit more choosy. I think, though, with deposit deadlines fast approaching, that I'll be sending in to DMU and withdrawing from CCOM. We'll see.

Yeah, I guess it would be really hard to give a reason for the waitlist/rejection and is probably why a lot of schools don't do it. When I wrote DMU, I didn't even get a reason. They just said, to paraphrase, that there were many qualified applicants to choose from and little things make the difference and just to keep them updated with any new information. What else can they say but it seems really strange to say something they knew before they gave out an invitation.

I just got accepted today! My deposit is due by Jan 5. Good luck everyone else!

DMU has the last 3 years matchlist on there website, personally I think both schools are good, but we are definately the most laid back with kick butt facilities. I believe we are also considerably cheaper in both cost of living and tuition compared to nycom.

DMU said they would take two weeks from the monday i interviewed to decide, but they told me in 5 days🙂🙂🙂🙂

I take it you're not frustrated anymore then?

So, are you taking your MD or DO acceptance? 🙄

That would depend on whether frustrated would rather go to the better school...or the md school 👍

I had a question for students at DMU. I know 3rd rotations are mostly in Iowa, and by the time I get there they all should be. But 4th year I am traveling to different rotations. I am married, and I don't want to be away from my wife for 6 months if I don't have to be. What has been your experience? Can I work it out so I am not away a long time? I know all experiences are different, but just somethinig to go off of. I am trying to decide between DMU and KCOM.

I am in the same boat. I am married with a young daughter. I have been accepted to DMU and even offered a good scholarship. It is hard to turn down, but the 4th year rotation is hanging over my head. I see the unknown with the 4th year rotation as a HUGE negative. The people I have spoken to (on the interview day) said "don't worry about it, it is not as bad as it sounds". But I really don't want to risk 1) being away from my family for long periods of time or 2)moving my family constantly 3) finding housing for short intervals, at multiple sites. I just don't know if I can got to DMU as a family man.😕

For 4th year rotions you are traveling around no matter what school you go to, unless you are in a big city like NY or chicago that has lots of teaching hospitals, the point of 4th year is to do rotations at places you want to go to for residency. But they do offer a lot in Des moines so you might not be away that like.

1 Month and then some. My application at DMU has been complete for over a month now. They say, it'll take them 30 days to get back with a response. Everytime I call the admissions office, lady tells me she still doesn't have an answer from the adcom.

Should I cross off DMU from my list and wait for a rejection letter in the mail? 🙁

Anyone cancel an interview via email at DMU? I havent gotten a reply back to acknowlege my email. I just dont want a potential applicant to miss out on an interview spot.

Why don't you just call them?

Why don't you just call them?

I got the answering machine everytime I call Danessa and I thought it would be easier for her to just reply to an email than to call back to acknowledge my phone message. Anways, Id imagine that she received teh email. Good luck to whoever gets that spot.

Just relax. It'll probably be the most chill interview day you have. Also, it's taco salad day!

Don't forget you can transform that taco salad into NACHOS!!!! AWESOME nachos I might add. We only have to get thru this ridiculous ethics exam first😡

You guys need to organize better. From what I hear about your ethics test, that is a bunch of complete BS, and you should go directly to the admin. If that doesn't work...threaten the prof into submission. No teacher should do that!!!

im flying to iowa tomorrow
i hope my fleight doesnt get delayed, they are expecting snow

just more stress that i dont need😎

hey guys
do you know what % of student interviewed get accepted?
thanks

I think its like 70%, according to the chart floating around here that's a few years old.

The school is pretty nice. I have not seen a more impressive facility at a DO school, and it is nicer than most MD schools I've seen too.

ya i hope this ~70% figuer is accurate
the school is really nice

I had an interview on Dec 13, and I loved DMU. I am really hoping to get into this school. They said I would know in two weeks, but with the holidays coming up, I bet it'll be more like the first week of January.

Does anyone have any experience with the waiting to hear from DMU game?

I interviewed on a Friday and received an email of acceptance the following Wednesday- I thought this was extremely fast though... I think it typically takes about 2 weeks

Goodluck!

I know that certain DO schools such as NYCOM and PCOM are friendly to in-state residents. As an Iowa resident myself, I was wondering if DMU demonstrates any preference for in-state residents?

DMU does not give preference to in-staters, just like most private schools. However, you will find a higher concentration of Iowans here simply because a boatload of natives apply.

Here's my impression/opinion on DMU after interviewing there.

The facility is nice, new and super clean. I thought I was in a hotel lobby bathroom in DMU's bathrooms. The wood trimmings in the lecture hall (so nice), library and many other places are just really nice. The simulation lab was nice. I'm not sure how helpful that will be but, I'm sure it's better than not having one. There are apartments within walking distance from DMU which have decent prices. However, they seemed to lack A/C. From the questions I've gotten during the interview, I get the feeling that there are a lot of rural medicine type of 3rd and 4th yr rotations. At any rate, their match list is good. So, rural medicine rotations didn't bother me. The fact that DMU's campus medical clinic on campus is great. I'm not sure if you can rotate there..... I got the impression that even during the 3rd yr students will have to drive quite a bit to their rotation sites since Iowa is more spread out than say Southern California.

What did leave a huge impression in my mind is the low percentage of minorities on campus on the day of my interview. I really didn't see them intermingling with the white students (having lunch, studying together etc....). Aside from DMU's distance from California where my friends are and where I grew up, this lack of diversity at DMU was a definite turn off for me. I only wished that DMU was in California....... oh well, I should be glad to be sitting on 7 interview invites and 3 acceptances so far.

When reading lots of the Pre-DO forums, many people address the issue of diversity and lack of it at certain universities. My question is why is this a huge issue for people? As a student at DMU, I would say that we have a diverse first year class (maybe not as diverse as Texas or California). But when interviewing here, the thought of diversity, or in some opinions lack of, never crossed my mind. I want to know why many individuals look for diversity. When I came here, I thought the facilities were excellent, the faculty awesome, and the school had a good repuation. That sold it for me. The thought of diversity never crossed my mind. Why is diversity such an influence for people???

I think you may understand my position if you were going to say Howard University (I'm assuming that you are white, judging from your avatar) or Meharry University. Can you truly say you'd feel as comfortable going to those schools as a minority in those schools in comparison to say DMU? I have plenty of white friends and all of their answers were "No".

Passing up a school with great educational opportunities simply because they lack perceived "diversity" is just sad, especially when your only real exposure to the student body is seeing us eat lunch. With that said, I don't see how you got the impression that the students that aren't white huddle up together and isolate themselves; everybody seems to get along and socialize, regardless of ethnic background.

Hi Boner. The minority students weren't huddled up together. Rather they were all sitting alone. I didn't see one group of students with a minority student in it. I think that's what stuck in my mind.

Sitting alone is not something exclusive to minorites in med school. It's what happens when you have a test after lunch that you need to cram for, especially OMM.

Yes DMU doesn't have a lot of minorities and for many this can be a concern. However, most and I mean most if not all the students at DMU and faculty are nice and don't have an ounce of any prejudice. I know seeing less minorities may convey some type of prejudice against minorities and I know for some minorities, this might make them feel uncomfortable being part of the minority, but really most med schools will be like this considering most med students are caucasian. I'm asian and I stand out amongst my peers, but I feel totally comfortable w/ everyone. This is true coming from my hometown where there was a minority majority. I often each lunch alone, but not b/c I don't have any caucasian friends but b/c I choose to. Dont let the lack of minorities or your impression of how they're treated effect your decision about DMU. It's an awesome school with great people. If you have any questions, feel free to PM
