DMU-COM Discussion thread 2007-2008

Back! Interview went ok. Guess I'll see in 2-3 weeks! Glad I interviewed on Thursday--did anybody have trouble getting to campus on Friday? I tried driving back home on Thursday afternoon/evening and spun out twice on I-80--almost got hit by a semi so I decided it was hotel time! I couldn't imagine having to try to get to Des Moines for my interview in that weather...counted 35 cars/trucks burried in the median or side of the road the next day.

hey i just got this email from DMU, i knew i was a long shot because i just got my mcat score last week. Should i just take this as a rejection (which is what i am currently doing) My stats are 3.63 overall 3.38 sci and 26o mcat (10p9b7v) They sent me:

We have recently completed a review of your application for admission to the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University.

Due to the large volume of competitive applications this year, we have placed your file in "Hold" status. Though you are not invited to interview at this time, you are still under consideration for a possible interview later in the application cycle.

Status Review: The Admission Committee will review your file again in the coming months. At that time, you will either be invited for an interview, remain in "Hold" status, or your application will be denied.

Average Statistics: The average cumulative MCAT score of our matriculants is 26. The average cumulative GPA is 3.64 and the average science GPA is 3.54.

Your File: Your admission file is complete at this point. There is no need to submit additional documents. Updates to your GPA and MCAT scores should be processed through AACOMAS

I'd think your lateness would've definitely contributed to this. Though it's by no means a "definite no hope for an interview" situation, it's not like you can do anything either way--the email is pretty clear that you should only update on grades and MCAT through AACOMAS. If you have to reapply and get these stats (and I assume an application that is otherwise strong) into them sooner, then I think you stand a normal, good chance.

Anybody who interviewed on/around Feb 21 hear any word back yet?

I have not yet heard anything, but I thought the magic day was Monday 3/10. I am not sure of that however.😕

I was blown away by the school on the interview day. Anyone else out there interviewed on the same day?

Basically anyone with suitable stats get this message from DMU; I received it months ago. They don't want to be bothered with app inquiries is my guess. It's the DMU equivalent to KCUMB's approach - except KCUMB provides people with "qualified status" and then bombards those people with invitations to join their post-bacc progams. 👎

Anyone else waiting to hear back from DMU? I was supposed to hear something today and hate waiting!

I interview on the 21st and haven't heard a word. Are they sending out emails or letters?

Same here! Interviewed on the 21st and still waiting..... :scared:

I got an acceptance after an interview, but it took three weeks to get it. They are behind this time of year from the sound of it, so don't freak out too much.

Has anyone else received the financial aid packet for 2008-09 or the application for scholarships?

Accepted today. First acceptance. Speechless.

So I was complete back in November, but they were waiting for my updated MCAT. I got a 20 last fall and retook it in January. I made a 25 this time. I have a 3.61 overall and 3.52 science. They received my new MCAT score on Monday March 3rd. (I called on 3/6 and that is what they told me)

I was just curious to see if they are still sending out interview invites. Does anyone know when the last interview day is? Also, is the invite by mail, email, or phone? I'm back home for spring break and someone is checking my mail. I would hate for her to have to open and read to me a rejection letter. I have not received any notification of being on hold or anything. Any input would be great. Thanks!

everything with dmu seems to be online from wat ive noticed, so expect to receive an email

I'm a tour guide for interview here at DMU and they have asked us to volunteer through May, so there's still 2 mo. of interviews to go.

O wow ok thanks DMU DO. I was at the AED National Convention last weekend in Dallas, and there was a representative from DMU. I actually won a purple ipod from DMU. I'm hoping it will be good luck!!!

I want a purple Ipod...man...🙁

Haha sorry! It even says Des Moines University on the back. I bet the school might have some in the bookstore.

Interviewed last Friday......Got accepted today!!!!!!!!

Interviewed 2/28, accepted yesterday! My first choice! YAY!!!!😀😀😀😀

You all will love it. Of course I am biased...but I think it is the best, even to most MDs because we get the osteopathic aspect.

Congratz to all who got accepted. And I'm glad to say that I have just got the acceptance email today. 🙂

It's interesting how they're spreading out these acceptances over this week.

So I got an email today that said...

We are happy to inform you that we have received all components of your
application and your file is currently under review. We will contact
you concerning the status of your file within 30 days.

Keep your fingers crossed that I will receive an interview invite! Did everyone receive this email prior to the interview invite email?

I think you can count that this is true. It's just telling you that you're complete. Good luck! :luck:

Yeah, everyone gets that email when their file is complete, sorry to break it to you.

Ok thanks for the info. I had already received an email like this last semester saying I was complete. They asked if I wanted to wait for my new mcat score before they reviewed my application. I obviously told them yes. When I called them last week to make sure they received my new score, they told me they received it on March 3rd.

After receiving the email stating your file is complete, did it generally take the full 30 days?

My interview invite came via email almost exactly 30 days after receiving the "file complete" email, but this was back in October and I interviewed in November.

Good Luck :luck: DMU is a great school 👍

Of those that interviewed at DMU on the 28th, anyone still waiting on a reply? Anyone get rejects or waitlisted yet?

I see that there are 3 people that have gotten acceptances so far. I am still waiting to hear. I called earlier and they said a decision has not yet been made. Hopefully I am not just freaking myself out.

I am in the same boat as you, and have very similar stats. i took the jan mcat and got a 26 and had a 3.63 gpa 3.4 sci. I ended up being on hold for an interview after they interviewed my file and they said they will see how the interview process goes to see if they will interview me. I took it as a rejection.

a817...
How were you notified that you were on hold? They didn't review my file at all last semester. They said they would only review it once, so I told them to wait for the new scores. Goodluck to you!

by email last week. i am in same position as you, got a 22r the first time last september, put my dmu file on hold, and a 26o the second time in jan and faxed the scores over. hey good luck you may have something that stands out that i didnt have

I interview in late march and I am finding airfares from the Rocky Mountain region to be outrageous. Any suggestions? What airlines fly into Des Moines? Is there any other airport close by? I've exhausted my savings and most of my mother's retirement account with application costs, hotels and airfares.

How can anyone do this more than once in a lifetime? :scared:

Good luck everyone :luck::luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:

When did you receive the email that said you were complete? I was just curious to see how long after you got the email saying you're on hold. Thanks!

How often does the committee meet? Do you think it is everyday now that it is the middle of March?

i doubt they meet everyday, i was complete in october and got the email. I called them afterwards about the jan mcat. i didnt get a second email stating that i was complete. I did called them, and they did tell me that my file was under review, and a week after i was on hold.

I have noticed that flying to Omaha is half as much. If you don't mind driving that rental car (assuming you're renting one) a couple hours each way, you can save about $250. Otherwise, yeah, it costs a ton compared to pretty much anywhere else.

My application is in review right now, but 30 days is a long time to wait!!! Did anyone recieve an interview notification sooner than 30 days after they received the "your file is complete email?" Has anyone received an interview invite within this last week?

Has anyone who interviewed on Feb. 29th heard back from DMU yet?
Thanks

Random rant here... I was in Des Moines these last couple of days (BTW the people in my class I met rock out loud!) and I was looking for an apartment. One of the guys that showed a place said

"DMU? Oh, my girlfriend is in the PA program there. You going to be a DO? I asked her what the difference is and she said it was only about another two years of school."

I responded "Uh..no. She is wrong. More like at least five and up to eight or nine years more. PAs have two years of school. DOs have 4, 1 year of internship, 2-5 more of residency and possibly a fellowship after that. It's the same thing as M.D. They can do anything from family medicine to neurosurgery."

His reply: "Oh. That's not what she said."

My reply: "Well, I'm right. Thanks for the look at your complex." I then left. The apartments were absolute crap-holes anyway. Filthy, smelly and poorly maintained. Finally found some nice ones in West Des Moines, though. I am starting to see how the physician v. MLP battles start to rage.

aaw--

I interviewed the 29th and heard back a week ago today (last Thursday). I know 2 others that have heard back as well. You should give them a call.

Do tell which they were- it will save me some searching later...

Don't want to bash...but Ashley Square Apartments off of Merle Hay Rd. I think they are in Urbandale. The outside is OK and they look really nice in Apartment Finder magazine, but what a DUMP on the inside. Cheap construcion, peeling paint, stuck doors, broken baseboards, crushed garage doors, water damage, etc. I went through the whole darn city and only like a few. Check out Mansions at Jordan Creek (gorgeous), Westlake Condominiums (quiet and affordable), Polo Club (nice location, quiet, pricey), Signature Place (low availability) and Wellington (1/2 of units getting remodeled). Wellington is under new management and they are putting a lot into the place (new cabinets in kitchen and bathrooms, new carpets, new appliances, cleaner grounds and a nice staff.) Can't decide which one definitely, but if not a house, probably the Mansions but there is already a waitlist for this summer.
