DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

just curious, how do you know if you got an automatic/pre-secondary interview?

I got my interview like 2 days after I submitted my secondary, BUT i submitted my secondary immediately. so, I can't really tell if I was getting an automatic one and I happened to be fast enough to submit my secondary before they could notify me of the auto-interview OR if they simply read through my entire app. in like 1 day and then invited me to interview? what do you think?

I know the way I phrased that question is a bit verbose, but I don't feel like rephrasing it. I think it gets my point across. 😛

I am curious, I was completed 2 in a half weeks ago with my secondary and I still haven't heard back yet. The e-mail suggests that I will be contacted within 30 days of completion, do you think I should call them to see if there was an issue?

Sorry I'm really late getting back to you. But in case you are still trying to decide, I would just wait. Last year, I received my invite at almost 30 days exactly. good luck. hope you hear good news soon

I received the secondary around 10:00 AM and then the fasttrack interview email about 3 hours later

p1acebo, just saw that you got the invite. Congrats! hope it goes well for you. like others have said, it is very relaxed.

Those are reasonable. I just hope that they don't screw you when you actually get there and say "oh, we can't do the DMU rate blah blah blah." But I think I will give them a call and do the same thing. I will have a car, so I guess I will have more options?

They'll give it to you. Call them before to confirm it, but it won't be an issue. The Marriott is really nice, it was worth it when I came.

If you were FasTracked, it will actually say it straight out in the e-mail. Otherwise it's just a regular interview invite

I guess I got a regular interview invite, then.

isn't a regular interview invite, in a way, better than a fast-track one? because a fast-track one would be given to you automatically for having certain #s. for a regular interview invite, someone actually read over your app, was interested in you, and chose to interview you. do you see what I am getting at?

Hey, I don't know if anyone has done this, but I wanted to send DMU an update of my current activities and class schedule that they would not see on my primary or secondary (just an email with updated information). Would this be appropriate? Especially if they want to ask about my current activities to improve my application?

Just got in on SDN. I am interviewing at DMU this week. I am extremely excited and I have only read great things about this school from this forum. Good luck to all who are in the hunt. 🙂👍

Haven't been on SDN in a while but have 1st interview at DMU on Friday the 11th. So NERVOUS. DMU is an awesome school and close to home. I hope my nerves dont screw it up.

This 2 week wait post interview is killing me. So much worse than waiting for my MCAT score. This was my first interview and #1 choice so it's double the anxiety :xf:. Can't wait till the 21st-22nd... Good luck everyone!

So, I guess they tell you at the interview to expect a decision within two weeks? Is it usually two weeks or does that depend on adcom meeting dates etc?

last year it took them about 3 weeks to get back to me. talk about being nervous! but I think that is out of the ordinary. the dean was out of town or something. if it runs a few days past two weeks, don't worry too much (easier said than done).

Just submitted my secondary for this school..I really should've submitted many weeks ago (I had spent too much money on other apps, was waiting on one more LOR, etc) and I hope DMU doesn't hold it against me. This sounds like a great school.
With all the invites and interviews people are getting,I feel like I'm pretty 'late' in the game here (by SDN standards anyway😉)

I felt the same way as you last year. I kept seeing other people getting interviews, and I didn't get my secondary in until late October (i think). And I didn't interview until early Feb. Don't let all the invites on SDN scare you too much. There's still plenty of time for you.

Right there with you! The wait is terrible... even if it's not the first choice school b/c it would take off a little pressure for subsequent interviews! Good luck to you... I'm hoping to know by next week :xf:

Just a question about secondary's and all that jazz.

I was verified long before my MCAT was in. So once I got my MCAT back (9/1), I added a bunch of schools. But when I check my AACOMAS file it just shows that they were submitted to AACOMAS. Other schools (CCOM and LECOM-B) have already sent me their secondary. How much longer should I be expecting to wait on ones like DMU? MSU was the school that I used to get my application verified and they had a release date next to the school so I'm just confused about if the schools have my file or not.

PS if it makes any difference my numbers are:
GPA: 3.84 (Science is the same)
MCAT: 25Q

Probably a little under a week. I received my secondary fairly quickly with DMU and I have a slightly worse GPA than you and a slightly better MCAT.

Greetings fellow Michigander. Good luck with the cycle and thanks for the info.

Where else you applying?

Im doin MSU, DMU, LECOM-B, NOVA, CCOM, PCOM, NYCOM, AZCOM

Hi guys, I just got an email from DMU saying they got all of my app stuffs, only waiting for my MCAT score which came out 9-8-09. I submitted to AACOMAS already so hopefully they'll get it by the end of this week. The thing is my MCAT score is not that great 23Q. 🙁 8PS/6VR/9BS (first one 19N)
My cGPA: 3.29 and sGPA: 3.22

ok ECs, I have a great story of my struggles to the US (immigration camp 7.5 years), medical interpreter.

Do you think I have a chance? Wat were the statistics of last year admission?

Not only a fellow Michigander, but a fellow Spartan 😉. Good luck to you too, I am applying to similar schools:

MSU, DMU, LECOM, CCOM, PCOM, AZCOM, and TUCOM-NY

Whoooo. Well best of luck through this cycle. If you ever need anything just lemme know. Maybe well have two spartans in the same osteopathic school next year!

GO GREEN!

Hey man I'm guna be blunt and just tell you that you probably won't get an interview. DMUCOM has an average mcat of around a 27 and gpa of 3.7 both of which you are far under. I think you still have a shot at other schools though! good luck! 👍

Do you think I stand a pretty good chance of getting an interview with:

GPA: 3.84
MCAT: 25Q (P -7, V-8, B-10)

don't count yourself out! The average stats were higher..but that means there were candidates well above and below those #'s too. Don't go in expecting an interview, but if you get one its great news! You very well could. They may want to hear more about your story 🙂

Almost identical to my stats, you will probably get one, but nothing is for sure. It depends on a lot of stuff out of your hands! Good luck!

Same to you, if you need any information let me know. My numbers were a 3.6 science gpa and a 26 MCAT and received an interview at DMU. It isn't till Oct 1st so I can't tell you how it went, but your numbers are comparable to mine so I think you are on good shape to receive an interview.

GO WHITE!

i have a sciGPA of ~3.8 and a 26 mcat. i got an interview so i'd venture to say you'll probably get one, too.

I would just like to wish everybody good luck on their interviews at DMU. It's awesome seeing you all rolling in with your suits at lunch. Makes me remember how excited I was on my interview day. The best thing you can do at your interview is relax and be yourself.
I'd also like to throw in a little plug for DMU for those of you who will be deciding among many schools. DMU is awesome! The classes are great, gross lab is AMAZING, the professors are incredibly helpful, there are tons of clubs and opportunities to get involved with community outreach, the facilities are great, and most importantly, the student body is super friendly and supportive of each other. I honestly cannot say anything bad so far! Sure I'm busy and have a lot of studying to do, but I am having the time of my life! And that's how med school should be!😀

I was one of those people in the black suits. Having my interview yesterday sure I was nervous, but the atmosphere of the school and the student body eased that right away. Everything was amazing facilities and faculty. Having interviews at Georgetown and other MD's and DO's this school is already at the top of my list. It fits my lifestyle and they are more focused developing a quality physician and PERSON rather than fostering a cut throat atmosphere. This place was awesome. Also with the free meal ticket you can get anything I mean anything you want, so load up. LOL Good Luck everyone!🙂:xf:

Hi all, I'm new to SDN!

Wanting to go to DMU, but got a "hold" message today. What in the world is up with that? I thought I was pretty competitive (3.6cum / 3.4 science / 26R)....is anybody else having those problems?

Is the competition this year really that stiff?😡

Got my interview invite today. Didn't know if I would receive one or not. I'm pumped I did, this school sounds great. I was complete 8/25. Interview is on 10/15. Feels like forever away.

You are below the average GPA (3.7) and MCAT (27+) in both categories for last years matriculants . As you know, GPA and MCAT stats increase every year so you will need to be better than the average in at least one category to get that interview invite. Don't worry though, the interview season is just beginning and yes, this year will be more competitive!

I had the Dr. Plundo and Dr. Gray interview team. They seemed to have a recruiting pitch rather than a why-should-we-accept-you pitch. The school is awesome and the city is a great place to study medicine. LOL @ the black suits... it was looking like a funeral at one point :meanie:

Congrats! Make sure you don't over eat during lunch...they give you a no-limit tab. I went into to my interview afraid i was going to burp. lol

Lol, I was the only one NOT in a black suit on my interview day. 🙂

Untrue.

Numbers. Aren't. Everything!!

i have 3.5 gpa (both cumulative and sci) and a 25R. i was complete aug 4 and got an interview invite a few days after that. my interview is sept 17.

i'm not sure why you were placed on hold... do you think it could be a recommendation letter or extracurricular activity issue?

Untrue.

Numbers. Aren't. Everything!!

I really wish more people would understand this. Time and again, just look at the numbers of people with stellar numbers who get multiple rejections or not even an interview. Happens constantly.

yup yup, I got an interview invite with a 3.7 overall, 3.6 science, and 26 MCAT. i'm right at their averages. you just need to be around their averages number-wise and then they don't care. you can be a little bit below their averages and be completely fine.

I think many schools also favor ppl within their geographical region, as well. at least that's how it seems....

this is definitely true. the atmosphere on campus is VERY cooperative and not cut-throat. just this week, we've received emails from our classmates about study guides and other helpful links. From what i've seen, everyone wants everyone to succeed. it is great here! This makes it so much easier (well, maybe i should say less tense).

Just thought of this and thought you guys might want to know:

all the professors at DMU have an open door policy. this means that you can go and talk to them whenever you want (well if they're really busy, I guess they'll tell you when a better time to talk would be). Just the other day, I went into one of our professor's office to ask him a question about research. he was very very helpful. He took about 20 minutes out of his day and just talked to me. we talked about the research and some things we had in common. Then, he asked me how school was going so far. he was very interested and wanted to know if he could help in any way. he told me to come back any time if i ever need to just talk or i have any other questions.

also, a couple of weeks ago, our biochem prof said that a few students came by his office to ask for help, and they said "sorry to bug you but..." He told the entire class that we can come to his office anytime, and that we are not bugging him. He encouraged us to come and ask for help.

one thing the faculty has stressed to us so far is to come and ask someone for help. don't wait or be intimidated. they really want to help out in any way they can.

Pre-secondary interview invite! It's going to be a seven-hour drive to get there, but I am really excited for DMU. Fantastic program, I can't wait to check out the sparkly up-to-date facilities 🙂

seven hours? Thats nothing, I drove ten hours from southeast Michigan. I lucked out with the weather. I recommend lots of coffee (Mcdonalds makes great coffee!), good music, chew gum in between coffee drinks, no beer, dont drive with your feet on the dash and use the cruise control. Don't pick up hitchhikers, they could be prison runaways. Check your tire pressure, engine coolant level, oil level, windsheild fluid. And don't be afraid to check out the scenery....and ooh yeah... use the batchroom, fill up your tank and grab a snack everytime you stop. These are not suggestions, these are orders! jk. good luck!

The drive there wasn't too bad. It's the drive home that is horrible. Hours of nothing to do but dissect your interview answers. My advice, sing along with songs so you don't freak out like I did lol.

I was one of the black suits last Friday and I must say that the interview could not have been smoother or more relaxed. If you just be honest and yourself it will go great. Good luck to all of you.

10 hours? damn, I will be driving from southeast Michigan as well and I was under the impression that it was an 8 hour drive! I guess I will be leaving earlier... what time did you leave the day before?

Its a ten hour drive....not including breaks. IL speed limit is 55 mph along much of the I 80...i booked a hotel for two days and drove one night before the interview. I left at 10 pm and got there around noon i took many breaks because I was getting hypnotized by the street lights.., checked into my hotel room...slept like a baby, woke up at 3 am, ironed my suit, watched some tv till 6 am, then i took off for the interview. I know, I am a bat. But its 600 miles... you could do it in 7 hours doing 85 mph... but IN, IL and IA have 65 mph and below speed limits...so your talking major chedder if you get busted

I live in IL. You can get away with 65-70mph on I-80. But dont do any 75-85mph as it seems in IL, WI, IN they LOVE busting OOS people.
