DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will wait a little bit longer to turn in my seat deposit..But I'm 90% certain that I will be at DMU next year..:]

Feel the same as you zetabetazeta. I really have to buckle down and decide but it's been hard since I have 2 more interviews coming up really soon at schools both In-state and that I really would die to get into 🙁

Anyone else checking their email every 30 sec?

Yes, my problem is I have a blackberry so I know if I get an e-mail immediately. I feel like my blackberry should be named "crackberry." To make things worse, I called today and the lady said that some of the people in charge took vacation time this week so we possibly might have to wait till NEXT week :scared:😱

so sad and nerve-wrecking 🙁

Just paid my deposit. Best $500 I ever spent

Alternates list 🙁 interviewed Nov. 4th as well
Sorry to hear that, IowaDoc. DMU was going to be tough with that MCAT score, so getting waitlisted means they had to have really liked you. Did you call the school and find out if they accept updates? I can't imagine they wouldn't take your interest into consideration if you make it clear to them.

So, I have a major concern (maybe minor for many) about the PC's that DMU provides to freshman students. I am a mac user and I'm wondering if the tablet PC that they provide is the computer that I NEED to use or can I substitute it for another laptop of my choice?

I called their IT department and asked the same question. Since the computer is the school's property you will not be able to sell the PC they give you, but you could give it to a family member to use (but technically it's only for your use). They said the mac will work fine on campus and with their software etc.

Thank you very much for this info. If software was incompatible I was just planning on installing windows on my Mac since I really don't plan on using their pc. Thanks for the info

Accepted! Interviewed 11/12 🙂

I have an interview Dec. 17 and I'm OOS. How many applications does DMU interview and what are the chances (based solely on #s) for OOS applicants?

I was very pleased to recieve an email today telling me that I am accepted. Interviewed 11-12.

I found this from a book from 2008-2009. I probably used data from 2005 or 2006. I'd imagine they are about the same now.
DMU COM - 359 accepted from 2227 OOS. 16%.

Something to keep in mind is that those numbers are from the total applicant pool. Since you are already to the interview stage your chances increase even more (probably around 30-50% OOS). Also, from what I understand DMU is a private institution (not state-owned) and therefore do not favor in state or out of state; candidates are judged primarily on their own qualifications - hence there is no break for in state tuition or increase for out of state tuition.

This was taken from the doctor of physical therapy FAQ:
"Do you have a preference for Iowa applicants?

No. We do not have an in-state preference. Because we are a private institution, we do not take applicants' state of residence into consideration when making acceptance offers. We are looking for the best and brightest applicants, regardless of their state of residence."

I could be wrong though, but that's just what I gathered from the school website and interview day. Anyway, good luck during your interview!

I cut and pasted data for the OOS applicants only. There is no such thing as a school without IS bias, whether they tell you that or not. Maybe it is because IS people are more familiar with the school, or they are genuinely more interested in attending school where they live, I don't know. But I have never seen statistics that prove otherwise for any school. for DMU, 93 IS were accepted out of 160 Applicants (58%).

For that same year of statistics (2005 or 2006) 468 OOSers were interviewed and 353 were accepted (75%). Again this was a few years ago and the statistics list 2387 total applications, and in 2009 they had 3185, an increase of 33% in applications. Since the class size remained about 220, they have to be more selective, but there should still be a good chance. Maybe 50% if I had to guess?

I could go on forever about admission stats, but the truth is that admissions decisions aren't made by flipping a coin, so just do your best to sell yourself and read up on the school. They have some really cool strengths to the program at DMU that were a major draw for myself and many other applicants. Do some research and see if you would be a good fit for DMU. If you are, bring it up during the interview and be prepared to mention why. Take the process into your own hands and don't leave it up to chance. Good luck

Does anyone know to whom the check should be made payable if we submit the seat deposit that way?

hey guys, were you all able to get a decision on your file within a month? My month long wait is finally over but i don't have any word from them! I'll give them a call tmrw (and if they tell me to wait, i swear to god i'll hulk-alize) but i just wanted to know the general consensus

in September/October it took 2-3 weeks. but it may be later right now and the next month or two because of the holidays and people taking vacations. giving them a call is a good idea 🙂

They made me wait for a few more days after the one month due date. Just call them tomorrow and find out. 🙂

I just sent an e-mail cancelling my 12/13 interview here. I hope it serves someone well! Good luck all! 🙂

Congrats Hawkeye! We probably spoke on our interview day. I was the guy who worked previously as a weekend radio news guy. That seems to stick in people's minds. Apologies to all for the overblown acceptance announcement. I was pretty excited at the time. (still excited 😉)

Anyway..Will someone be starting a C/O 2015 FB page? I didn't find one in operation yet. I'm almost certain that this is where I'll be in the Fall. Congrats to all accepted, and best of luck to those still waiting!

did anyone get the rural medicine application in their email today?

I did. It's very enticing, but also a big commitment.

I know what you mean. I was looking for the small print where you would have to sign your name in blood (kidding). I'm not sure I could do four years of rural medicine. Perhaps I'll go shadow a rural doctor and see if it's right for me - looks like you need a letter of recommendation from one anyway for the application.

For those that mentioned the one-month wait for acceptances, did they tell you this during your interview? I believe us 11/18 people were told two weeks, which would mean we should know by Monday.

Paid my deposit and faxed my agreement. So excited for the fall! 😀

I think the one month is in reference to their application file (online aacomas, any supplemental things like letters, etc.) and whether or not it is considered 'complete.'

As for interviews, you should hear within 2 weeks unless the admissions committee is on vacation (they were in my case and I had to wait about 4 weeks for the decision).

I think there's already a FB page up. Search this thread for "Facebook" and you should be able to find it. I'm not a fan yet though, still haven't paid the deposit. Will soon. 🙂

I would practice in a rural community without question, but I don't want to commit to being in Iowa post-residency. It looks like they do this through federal funding, so why the in-state regulation? IMO, approved schools should have this set-up as a national program, where you can choose a qualified rural community in a region of your choice.

Granted, this is certainly a step in the right direction for boosting primary care provders.

So I'm assuming that you've already made your choice and decided to go to DMU. That's awesome. see you next fall.
