In response to kidT's previous posting in DMU Class of 2004...

I remember reading something about the "Dog lab" in DMU....

Is this a required lab for everyone? The hell are we doing with dogs.... We're not VETS!!! 😀

I'm sure this has been a constant controversial in DMU... Can anyone at least give me the link to the previous postings? or make a comment about how this whole "DOG LAB" works....

Do first years go through it? It's not in our first year curriculum that was given to us in our packet.... Is DMU ashamed of showing/telling about the dog lab? What gives?!!!

Dress Code: there is one but it is not followed.
Suregery labs: this is done during the second year. There are four components. Only the last one involves the use of dogs. It is not required!!! I repeat, you do not have to do this part! I hate making an issue out of this because if you dont want to do it... you don't have to! They have other things available for that forth section that do not involve live tissues... is it as good of training... no idea. Please don't start the dog lab thing here... it has been adressed time and time again.

How did you know you wanted to pursue surgery so early in your medical school career? what class/es did you take that made you want to take this path in life?

JP, I have been volunteering in the OR since the seventh grade. I guess it just kind of grew on me. I love the demands that it places on you. I am also one of those few people who actually enjoys the OR atmosphere.
Here are my top interests at this time:
CT surg
CT anesthesia
Invasive Cardiology.... are you seeing the trend here?

This does not mean that I will go into any of these though. I think that it is very important for every medical student to keep their minds open as they go through school and rotations. Imagine spending a month doing opthamology if you've already made up your mind to do endocrinology... it is going to be a very long and boring month. If nothing else, you need to pretend to be interested in whatever rotation you are on to keep from getting bored and to get a good grade from your attending.

The three things I listed are just the things that top my list at this time. Will this list change... probably... maybe not... I'll just have to wait and see.
 
Now, I'm thinking twice about the NHSC scholarship thing.... Which would limit me to primary care alone!!! That's if I even get it....

Where can DMU students volunteer their time and actually have the ability to see patients?

Or where can DMU students just volunteer, period?

Can we volunteer at the Tower Med Ctr?

I'm kind of bored myself, so I'll just keep rambling. I really can't see myself having a practice that is exclusively based in the office setting... just a personality thing.
Other things that I have interest in:
Endocrinology (specifically Diabetes)
non-invasive cardiology
hospitalist (branch of IM)
Infectious disease (ID)

Things I don't want to do:
OB/GYN... for MANY reasons!
Pediatrics: because I would lose my license for killing the parents of the first abuse or shaken baby case I have. I love kids but hate dealing with frantic or obsessive compulsive parents.

So, these are just a few of my opinions and personal experiences. I know a lot of classmates love the idea of being in control of their own office practice, but I would personally go crazy. I enjoy being in the hospital setting.
 
I love kids too and see myself pursuing something in that direction.... Maybe I'll change my mind once the frantic parents starts kicking into my medical experience....

what's "hospitalist"?

I see myself working in the hospital setting as well... I'm not sure why other want to have their own practice.... Seems like a pain in the a$$, imho!

Don't get me wrong... there is nothing wrong with primary care... I may end up doing it myself someday. Who knows! Primary care doesn't just mean Family Practice. Internal med is included in primary care and there are about 40 things that you can subspecialize in after doing IM. You can subspecialize in peds as well. I also believe that Emergency medicine is included in the "primary care" genera. If I was you I would find out what that scholarship defines as "primary care." Do they allow you to subspecialize in the primary care areas? Besides, you can always go back and subspecialize after serving your time if you so desire.

I know that you can volunteer at the peds department at Mercy hospital through the peds club. You can always set up volunteering stuff on your own too as long as you can find a willing physician. I don't think there is any volunteering at the tower, not yet anyways.

I think the deal with the NHSC Scholarship is just that.... I am NOT allowed to subspecialize until i serve my yearsssss with them!!! But I think you can do a combination of primary care med such as IM/Peds.... I don't think NHSC classifies Emergency Med as one... I hope they do by the time I get out.... That's something I would like to do.... I love the stress....

When I get bored.... I have to do something.... or else I go AAAAHHHHHH!!!!

Anyone else like to share their future specialty or field? Just wonderin'
 
Hospitalist is a new branch of internal medicine. You apply for a general internal medicine residency. you get licensed as an internist. However, your practice is exclusively in the hospital ( no office practice). Basically, you are hired by the hospital to oversee the care of patients with chronic diseases.
There are no "hospitalist" residencies or fellowships established as of yet... that may change. However, there are some IM programs that train there residents to become "hospitalists" by doing most of their training in the hospital. If I went this route, I would also do a fellowship in Intensive Care medicine... just to be more marketable and to be able to do more things.

Here's another question:

Can someone clarify the grading for DMU?

This question comes to mind because as I was walking through the academic building I notice the scores of the students in a few classes.... I notice that most people score around 80's.... Did notice a few 60s.... yikes.

This may sound stupid, but how tough are the courses.... what is the normal scores/grades for classes?

Is there a class rank that people look at? where is it, if it does exist?
 
In regards to a previous posting I made about free immunization at the Tower Medical Center.... My bad!!! 😱

The titer's aren't free after all or any of the other immunization... They had asked if I had insurance.... go figure.... There's no such thing as a free lunch!!! 😀
 
well, I got my shots done very cheaply at planned parenthood.. my hep shot was free cuz I told them i have no insurance (which is true) and I got my tetanus and one other shot for like 10 bucks each. it's worth a call if you have to get a ton of shots! (and the NP's there are usually REALLY nice) And no, you don't have to be a girl to go there. 🙂

Our grades are done on a pure percentage basis... ie, if the average of your five biochem tests averages out to 89%, then your grade in biochem is recorded as 89% for 4 credits. At the end of the semester, they total up your credits and percentages in each and that gives you your overall percentage (ie, 89% for 21 credits)
I believe that the class average for the first semester for my class was somewhere around 85-87%. So, about 100 people had averages above 86% and the other hundred were below 86%.
 
I got REALLY bored last night and counted up all of the tests and such that we had for the first year:
42 written exams
11 practical exams
13 quizzes

Just four more to go for the class of '04 and then we are done... for a little while anyways!

Only you know your class rank... it is not public info!

Truth be told, the courses aren't that difficult. Let me clarify: the material isn't too difficult to understand. Its just the volume of information and the speed at which it comes at you that is challenging. There is a crap load of information to learn and you get two years to learn it... so it comes at you fairly quickly.

I'm pretty shocked how there's more written exams.... I hope it's not essay formats... I'm not much of a writter....

Those are a lot of exams.... I wonder if ours will be the same amount.... Do you mind if I can see those some time? just to mentally prepare myself.... YUP, the overachiever in me acting up again 😀

Pure percentage huh?!.... I was under the impression that it was translated to a letter grade... guess not... I'm wrong....

they are all multiple choice tests.. the written tests that is.
 
They changed your (DO '05) schedule around a bit, but it should be anywhere around 40-45 written exams.
 
Oh crap.... I'm never good with multiple choice examinations... heck.... it hasn't stopped me yet.... 😀

I guess we still have tons of examination.... Nothing that I didn't expect already.... No pain, no DO!!! 😀

By the way.... I just read COMP's trend and apparently they now have their own trend at COMP's website.... That'll slow them down... hehehe 😀
 
Does DMU have a site for their students? To post things up about classes, jobs, volunteer availability, special events, etc.?
 
When will we get this WONDERFUL opportunity to get buy old exams? Can I go to Matthews and check it out.... I haven't seen anything there yet pertaining to old exams....

IzlamicM, the person that wants to buy your stuff is actually a first year now, but will be a second year next year....

Any answer to the question I posted above about when to get the notes/exams/whatever helps that would help me?
 
Regarding old tests: You can sign up to buy them at the beginning of the schoolyear. Although some courses and professors change, I would say that overall, these are worth buying.

Regarding old notes for the first year coarses: I don't think that these would be worth the money.

Regarding Notepool: notepool is a service that each class hands down to the next. All it is is a transcript of each lecture. I would highly recommend getting this despite the cost... about $300. For some classes like biochem, the notes in the bookstore are so complete that they won't even notepool biochem... waste of time and money. Other courses are less organized or professors notes are incomplete so notepool becomes essential. Notepool (in my opinion) is essential!

If nothing else, sitting in radiology makes the whole first year worth the work. Dr's Gleason and Tanner ROCK!!! By far one of the most interesting things we've done all year!

PS: JP, you'll sign up for notepool at the beginning of the schoolyear as well... just trying to predict your next question.

Only seven school days and 4 tests to go for class of '04!!! Then we are all released under our own recognisense for the summer!
