DMU-OMC Class of 2005

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, you should hold my driving against me, I'm terrible. Yep, an all girls camp. 315 girls ranging from 7 to 15 yrs old. And a staff of 120 of which only about 8 to 10 are guys. My brothers drool over that fact everytime I head out for the summer.

I hope you can see my drool from here!!! ;)

Just let me know whenever you are going to be on the raod... :p

I'm back.... Just when you thought you got rid of me!!! :D

Wow.... I'm gone for one day to go apartment hunting in Chicago with my wife and you guys just posted away.... I'm shocked!!!

Feels weird not responding in SDN!!! Kinda missed it....

KidT,
I don't hear any garbage trucks because I'm more towards the front of the complex.... I guess I got lucky in that respect.... I definitely like my place. :D

jsdmu
HEY!!! I have registered my car with Iowa license plate.... Does that mean I'm a dangerous driver?!!! I guess you don't have to answer that one.... Cause I am DANGGEERROUUUSSS, yeeeooowwww!!! :D

Katie
THE CAMP COUNSELOR!!! Yeeeaaaahh!!! In an all GIRLs camp, you must be the envy of all male kind!!! Hey, if it makes you feel any better, the Illinois drivers were really bad today... I MEAN REALLY BAD!!!

Definitely looking forward to meeting up with you guys when the time comes!!!

Later dudes and dudette, JP

I guess I'll be the designated driver :D

Des Moines weather is absolutely great... for now... ;)

Later,

JP...I don't know if men would envy me b/c I'm a female so a large group of women just means a potentially large cat fight :) However, the 8-10 males on staff might be the envy of most guys.

Josh.... you won't share your knowledge with us as of yet.... Is this like the military?!! Hush, hush, don't tell, didn't see or hear anything!!! :D

Very important question:

Has anyone in DMU ever met, worked, or talked to a Dr. Bryan Larsen?

I ask because I might meet him to do some helping around the research department at DMU. I know that he's the Dean of Research but that's about it.... His info is on the DMU website... Just wanted to know his personality and how I should approach him.

Iowa plates = dangerous driver (no matter what your origins are)!

Katie, I think the only thing better than an all girls summer camp would be an all girls cheerleader's summer camp... at least from a guys perspective! ;)

JP, I just want everyone to relax and enjoy their summer... come august, you'll be bombarded with information. So kick back and relax.

Dr larson is the head of research. I'm not sure what projects he is working on personally. Dr. mortenson (pharmacology) teaches cardiovascular pharm and may be a good guy to do some research with. I know Dr Johnson (Virology) is doing research as well.

JP, the soon to be second years run the anatomy labs for the PA and PT classes during the summer. I'm not sure if they will even let you go in there but you may want to talk to dr matz (anatomy) about spending some time in there.... if you are really bored. Just don't tell him that I sent you!! I don't want to get myself in any trouble.

I had a very interesting talk with dr. Reed yesterday. He is the director for the general surgery residency for DMU. One of their 5th year residents who is finishing this june was unable to get into an oncology-surgery fellowship. This resident for three years in a row has had the highest (DO) board scores in the US. needless to say the guys is VERY good... and nice too. The reason he couldn't get into the fellowship is because of his lack of research, despite everything else.
My point is this, if you want a very competetive fellowship, research may be a nessessity. There are people every year who get these fellowships without research, but it will certainly help you to have a few articles with your names on them.

by the way, research takes a lot of time. I did two years of physiology research while at creighton. None of our studies supported our hypotheses, so nothing ever got published.

Congratulations are also in order for Dr. Reed. He is going to be inducted as the president of the ACOS (american college of osteopathic surgeons) this comming fall.

JS, you are the bomb!!! dude... Thanks I'll look into all your suggestions next week.... Attending anatomy lab sounds great will see whether or not Dr. Matz will let me.... I'll keep my lips sealed. Thanks a million!!!

Do research during undergraduate count for going for a fellowship?

I got published as a co-author for doing Orthopedic Research during my undergraduate years on Osteogenesis Imperfecta and treatment of mice models with biphosphates called Alendronate....

may help a little but probably not too much... I think they are looking for recent work.
I know that the surgical fellowships look for research done during the general surgery program. Cardiology fellowship looks for research done during IM residency.
This is one of the DO's weakest areas... research. Most of the sites that we go to for 3rd and 4th year as well as most (99%) of our GME hospitals do little or no research. This is largely do to the fact that most places DO's do their training are not university based intitutions... where the research is done.
I know that Dr. Reed is talking about incorporating a year or two of basic or clinical research into the surgery residency for those who want it. This probably wont happen for a while though... the biggest problem is funding to pay for these extra years. Also, getting residents to give up another year or two may be a problem. Most MD programs I know of that let residents do research incorporate it into the program so that the length of the training program does not change.

So, how does all of this talk about research affect someone who wants to do IM, FP, peds or EM? Not much at all. It is really for the very competetive fellowships.

73% of all statistics are made up! (such as my 99%)

Izlam, just shoot me an e-mail or post up when you drop that stuff off at the bookstore. I also let the ladies there know that I'm waiting for your stuff. Thanks again! Are you handing off the board books as well with that stuff? How do you want me to pay you?
Have a nice day and enjoy the rest of the pass/fail coarses! :D

By the way Izlam, do you know what you want to do yet and why? ie: peds, IM, ID???

Katie....I hear the camp counselor thing, and I can only hear porno music. What a setting! agghghghgghhhhh....

Po -- is your wife going to live in Chicago while you are @ DMU? If so, we should hang - I need someone to hang out with who's married so I can't get dragged out to singles bars.

Kid, yup, my wife will be in Chicago starting mid September after that I'll be pretty much left with my medical school work.... I will be visiting occasionally in the weekends to minimize the pain of separation :( She's there for a year....

Anyway, hanging out sounds good.... I'll keep ya' from those pesky singles infested bars!!!! :D

You know that our classmates are probably single, so one way or another you'll be surrounded by them.... Just jokin'....

Give me a call when you get to Des Moines we can grab somethin' to eat and finally meet in person. Later,

Why are Des Moinesnians/Iowans so fascinated about a building that's going to blown up?!!! :D

So is anyone going to watch it? or did watch it? :D :D :D :D :D

I'd love to flatten the whole city! That way I wouldn't have to be here... makes sense doesn't it?

By the way Kid T, the club scene is very pathetic here... you'll be very safe there. Its nothing like Detroit! Motor City in effect!

Stay away from dating your classmates... ain't nothin but trouble!!!

Question: why does everyone of my posts on this page say that I have 117 posts???

Josh...I think you might be a bit wrong about Iowa drivers. I just got back from Omaha and there are some Nebraska plates that shouldn't be on the road. Ugh, 35 in a 60 mph zone!

Kid...I'm not sure what to think of porno music and my camp, it doesn't quite fit. It is more like enough Brittany Spears and boy bands to drive a person nutty :) I'm just glad the Spice Girls are done, that was a bad summer.

Good questions Josh... I'm not sure

Maybe the numbers changes to all your postings as you post more....

Katie, where are you residing right now? Omaha? and How long is this camp thing? How did you get hooked up with going to NY to do this? Just interested'.... I'm a very curious person as you can see...

I passed by Iowa City... Didn't get a chance to stop by, but I did see a pretty big mall. I think it's in Coresville (or something like that) any way, I wish there is a big mall around here.... All the malls I've been to seem small compared to what we have in California.

I'm just ramblin' :D

Yup, I was right... I just check my postings and they do ALL change as you post more.... Later,

Jp, I'm at my parents' home, as I am in between apartments. My hometown is a small spec called Harlan. It is about 90 min west of Des Moines and only about 45 min east of Omaha. As for camp, I got started in it after my freshman year of college. I met the director at a summer job fair held at my university. She said "you want to work in upstate NY for the summer, don't you?" I figured, sure, why not. Usually I am there for a little over 9 weeks (mid june to mid august) but I'm coming home two weeks early to move in and be here for orientation. For the last 3 summers I have worked with the 7 -8yr olds but this summer I won't have an age group. I always have an awesome time. Were else could I get paid to canoe, build sand castles, MC talent shows, etc.

Katie.... Definitely LUCKY YOU!!!... I would have jumped for that opportunity as well....

Not sure when you're leaving but have FUN!!!... I guess I don't have to tell you that. You seem to genuinely enjoy doing your work!!!

Katie, like I said, NE drivers are up there pretty close to IA drivers. I always enjoyed driving out of Detroit towards lansing when all of the factory workers got off... if you aren't doing 90mph, your ass is getting run over! I guess they just know how to drive in the motor city!

Kid t: I got the porno thing... nice touch!

Js - you know what Detroit is all about, I see. Then you know that the drivers are maniacs and fast as hell. When I was in IA, it was like a damn nursing home with how slow them people were driving! But I am Mr. Detroit - I love this damn city. I just bought my "Made in Detroit" jacket for this fall, so I can represent my hometown in Iowa.

Po - I didn't know you were going to be separated from your wife, and that has to be rough. But keep the faith, my man.

And I will never date someone I go to school with - I do NOT **** where I eat (got that one from Payback, with Mel Gibson).

Kid T, you an insomniac or just as bored as I am? I've got my "made in Detroit" hat with the auto worker holding the wrench! I am representin my peeps!

90mph?!!.... How about 95-100mph?!!! I've always felt that these are pretty nice speeds.... I made it to Chicago in under 5hours.... it was nice....

Been pull over once in my entire driving career.... The officer said he got me at 95mph. Which was grounds for a misdemeanor, but because it was my first ticket he let me go with a "75mph" and schooling.... Lucky me.... :D

When I went to Ottumwa.... geez those Iowa drivers were so slow that I had to pass most of them.... In one instance, I had to pass a total of 7 cars... Anyway, I was in a rush to catch the AMTRAK train to pick up my shipment.... different story.

Note: I don't advice speeding fast unless you're really are in a hurry :D Otherwise, drive at your own risk!!!

Thanks for the info about Dr. Larsen, I search the DMU website and his current research does involve alot of OB/GYN issues....

Katie, I went to Creighton with a guy from Harlan... Kent something or other... red head guy. I expect you to know him since you are from such a small town... ;)

I think Iowa drivers pride themselves on NOT breaking the speedlimit! Drives me f&$%*##$ insane!!!

JS

Nice hat....Very nice hat...You should see the jacket I picked up. You should put in an order for when I come out there. Don't want to run low on Detroit logos! Like I said, I'm the world's biggest Detroit fan, so I MUST have the gear.

I don't sleep - I am a vampire. You and me and po burning the midnight oil....

I thought I'm the only vampire.... That's me a night person....

Guess where all on at the same time!!!

One of my favorite experience was driving through chicago during rush hour. It was bumper to bumper and we were all doing 100mph. Cop passed us on the shoulder... had to be doing 120.

Kid T, you ever find yourself in the wrong part of Detroit? I havemany stories that involve Detroit!

I often look back on my adolescent years and am always amazed that I am not dead or in jail! Josh = wild child!!! (or "misguided youth" :D )

some more reminising here... used to cross the river to drink in Windsor at 18. God bless canadian drinking laws. at the time though, couldn't get into the strip clubs til 21... so I missed out on that experience! Damn my youthful body!

My brother is a chemical engineer in detroit, so he hooks me up all the time with cool gear.

Naughty, naughty jsdmu!!! :D

You make me look like a saint!!! :D

Drunk canoe racing, soaking drive thru workers with pop, pulling each other on skis behind our cars (works best during the winter by the way), etc, etc, etc.

Ever see the MTV show "a$$hole"? we were much like that before it was popular!

so many things to try to get away with, so little time...

I alway told my mom I would turn out OK!

Maybe I just need some tough love from Katie... ooopps, did I just write that?

Just kidding Katie. I am a perfectly "normal" guy, a gentleman, and a scholar. Much love to my driving-impaired Iowan friends. ;)

Hey jsdmu,

I didn't realize you spent time in Omaha at Creighton!

Tell me about the guaranteed admission deal they had. Were you able to take advantage of it?

Anyway, I just had to post so you two (kidT) didn't think you were the only night owls.

Dave

PS All of the STUPID accidents I've seen in Omaha had Iowegian plates. Didn't know about the phenom. until I moved here from San Diego. Besides the driving, we (me and wife) have met tons of Iowegians that are EXTREMELY nice.

Josh...the only person from Harlan that I know has the first name of Kent was my highschool principal. Something tells me that he isn't the person you are talking about. When did you graduate from Creighton? And you sound so much like one of my older brothers. His advice to me when he graduated from highschool was "don't ever do anything like what I did, or I will kill you!" It was a touching moment :)

JP...I'm off to NY on Tuesday as long as Delta doesn't bump my flight. I'm getting excited b/c I hope to make it back to NYC this summer. And don't worry, I won't be driving.

So what I'm getting about Ioweigans is we are nice but slow.

Dave, I did two years undergrad then four years of pharmacy school all at creighton. the guaranteed admissions started my first year of pharmacy, so I wasn't able to be included in that. So, of the 116 seats that creighton has, about 80 (maybe 84) went to creighton kids. So they filled the rest of the seats with people who got 12's and 13's on their MCATS (and offered them a lot of money to go there). This way they can report that they have really high MCAT scores... even though only 30 people actually took the MCAT. I am a little bitter that they didn't even give me an interview since I dropped six years of tuition there. However, I did get into DMU, and I must say that I am really happy here, its going to get me where I want to go and I have made a lot of friends here. So, maybe it was all for the best.

Dave, are you at Creighton right now? I know they have changed the requirements for the guaranteed acceptance since it was initiated... I don't know what changes they have made though.

I do miss Omaha though...

Gad - I went to school and worked in Detroit for aobut 7 years. Let me just say that I have my fair share of messed up Detroit stories. Perhaps why I love the damn town so much. I never went over to Canada to drink until I got bored with all the Detroit bars. You see, I had a great fake ID when I was 16, and got all that partying out of my system at a young age.

My partying is much more refined nowadays. Quit smoking. Haven't been drunk in years. I just like to have a beer and chill. Rarely over a two drink limit (didn't even break it when I celebrated my acceptance).

Kid, the last time I got drunk was when I got my acceptance to pharmacy school... for years ago! I got a call three days before the semester started. Ended up mooning a lot of cars and, well, you know the rest of the story...
You went to U of D right? I think you can leave your kevlar vest at home... not much need for it here. Is Ypsilanti still the drive by capital of the US? I know we (detroit) lost the rights of "murder capital" of the US to Chicago two years ago.
Good times, good times...

sorry... four years ago.

Geez... woke up and up comes the 17th page and all these comments....

Katie, have fun in NYC.... visited there once for a research conference.... Absolutely a great city!!! It's pretty much alive 24/7... But I'm sure you know that.... Take care of yourself there.

All this talk about Michigan.... Does DMU accept alot of Michigan students? I'm surrounded by MI folks!!!

I have to agree though, so far every Iowan I meet are nice people.... :D

Later folks!!!

Where did that bit about dating start? I had heard from others never to date people from my class. However, one guy highly recommended I not forget about DPM students.

Josh, I'm sure I don't know the guy you went to school with named Kent. I think I'm the young'n here b/c I graduated from highschool 4 years ago and I finished undergrad a month ago :)

Didn't go to U of D, sorry. I went to Wayne State University. Much more GSI (Ghetto Per Square Inch).

A friend @ DMU told me that he found it funny that, after all those years in Detroit, he can leave his books at the library for ten minutes without a robbery happening.

I still don't believe him.
