Next Wednesdy I'll know what the Navy is going to do with me.

Anyone have some spare seroquel or geodon?

Ask me that again in a few years. GOOD LUCK you Frenchtastic Fuc$er. Did anyone who watches ER catch Ray saying he was going to the plush horse? That is this awesome ice cream parlor right by my childood house that is a local landmark. Awesome ice cream. When it is warm there is almost always a line out the door. I have my first interview tommorrow, Rosalind Franklin university, AKA finch university. Should be interesting.

good luck master of the dartos. Interviews, from what I"ve seen, or over-rated. Everyone really does already pretty much know who they want. If you are interviewed by dudes I'm sure you'll be "wanted" VERY MUCH.

Yeah, it was very anticlimactic. I had 3 seperate interviews, and they were mostly softball questions, then they were like, "you can definitely come here if you want, what do you think of the place, what do you want to know about us?"

Same impression. When I was up at my most recent interview, the PD said during my one-on-one. "The average IM applicant statistically has a 85% chance of matching #1, 93% at #1 or #2. Now, you have to consider some people have better applications than others. What do I have to do to get you to put us first."

Greg...I have to know what sexual favor you asked for. I simply must.

I think you're pretty satisfied at home and all, but every man has fantasies...you just live yours.

Do you guys get like gift packs at the end of your interviews? I've got 3 coffee mugs, 4 t-shirts, a fleece, tons of candy, and a usb flash drive. Not to mention dinner the night before at 9/10 I've interviewed at and free hotels everywhere. It's sad how far FP has fallen that they have to do this.

About halfway done with interviews. Two left in Omaha, one in KC, two in Chicago, three in MN/St. Paul, and maybe Springfield, IL. Might cancel that one. Anybody interview there?

The best ones do. I got a coffee mug, some peanuts, and (get this) and beer bottle opener key-chain...

So I said I'll rank them high.

It involved a polar bear, alive or stuffed, perferably stuffed. Some ice cubes and a pitching wedge.

Im glad that I'm not trying to get into like, ENT or something. It's nice to be in demand. I feel bad for the people who are busting their butts to get in somewhere. My big interview is on the 22nd, very excited. When I go to university of colorado I'm taking a week off and skiing there.

So this is my evaluation for Derm.....this is what I put under "Site's Weaknesses"

Where to start. I guess I'll start by saying I was not supposed to be with this guy, I was assigned a different doctor when I got to the hospital. *******'s office was 20 miles from where I thought I would be so the drive sucked. Now to begin....Dr. ******* is, to put it bluntly, an overbearing oaf. I'm surprised he hasn't been sued for sexual harassment or malpractice yet. He has horrible patient manners, doesn't practice any sort of sterile technique (not even handwashing....nothing), and belittles women at any chance...including his staff. As a student, you act more like his servant for a week, doing various odd jobs (including trash..I kid you not....200K education to take care of his trash...awesome), driving him around in his car, and watching him check his email and download pornographic attachments....at a hospital. BUT WAIT, there's more. Not only is he known around town as a drug rep "*****" to be blunt, but he also sells his own products and pushes them on his patients. He is a horrible practice manager, refuses to update any technology and has horrible time management skills. He made me watch slides....real slides, not a ppt... and then proceeded to either take care of his bills, call people/reps, or fall asleep during this "lectures" of his. I think the topping on all of this was his lack of manners. During meals I ended up with half the food from his plate on my clothes, he would fart in the presence of others (including patients!) and not excuse himself, and just had an overwhelming stench about him. Overall I learned much less than I wanted to on this rotation. I would strongly dissuade students from rotating at Des Peres for Dermatology unless you could guarentee not being placed with Dr. *******.

I'm probably gonna get reamed by school on this one......god I just had to do it. I need to hire a PR guy....ah well.....the price I pay for truth.

I am way behind the times but, holy **** is that funny hhahaha.

Forensic path - great rotation! After the autopsies are all done, usually by 12-1pm, sometimes earlier, I just sit and surf the internet and wait for my man to get off or the next scene to call in. A little smelly sometimes, but definitely fun. I only dry heaved once. And you see unbelievable ****! Crazy pathologists...and nobody believes me when I tell them that I actually wanted to do path at one point.

so at my last interview everyone was really nice. You know the usual "You spent so much time here we don't have anything to ask you". Except for the one attending who is old school and doesn't even operate at that hospital anymore. He pimps me on neuroanatomy hardcore and at one time I couldn't answer his questions and he asks me "So have you been to medical school". It was one of those times where I thought to myself, I think I have. I still want to end up there as my #1 choice, but I wish sometimes I was interviewing at places like the rest of you. Hopefully I'll know in the couple of days because I have an interview in VA and it would be nice not to have to travel even though it sounds like a great program. At any rate I feel like I'm dying so I'm going to bed. Keep it real homies.

I've decided that I am excited for the PE exam for one reason: Not one but TWO nights in a hotel room with Astro............just like the old days.:scared:

Im going to get ripped for being insensitive but I gotta say..

Im watching TV right now. Its some TV show on TLC about a family of "little people". The youngest son who is about 13 years old, about 4'1" and a whole of 50 lbs is shooting a shotgun for some unknown reason. Each time he shoots he goes FLYING back and the gun goes soaring into the air. He keeps getting up and shoots again and each time.. BOOOOM, he goes flying. This is the greatest show Ive ever seen.

Looking for more ridicule here.

This morning I was shopping for a$$wipe at walmart when I was passing buy the electronics dept. And overhead the guy says they have 2 Playstation3 consuls right off the truck. I elected not to buy one since Im not really into playing anymore since my wife yells at me everytme I do. Got home, checked ebay, just too see. And the average selling price is almost 775 dollars.

Man Im a idiot.

My ma calls and says I know you got a wii, so I was wondering if you want me to take back the ps3 I got you for christmas. A **** no was said from my mouth, and a merry xmas is what I"m looking forward to!

🙂

What did you do to get on Santa's "nice" list. I hope it wasn't anything naughty.

I just put a deposit on my place in the C/O 2011. Anyone know if there is anywhere even CLOSE to New England a DMU student can do 3rd/4th year rotations that would be pretty good, too?? The school wouldn't give me a list. Thanks (hopefully)!

I don't think that you would be able to do 3rd year there. But defintiely 4th year, if they keep the 4th year open like it is now. You just have to set them up yourself.

The key with east coast rotations and bigger academic centers is that you have to put your app in pretty early and may have to pay a deposit fee. Usually it is pretty easy to find your required family practice for 4th year (which consists of either 4 weeks rural or community need area/4 weeks regular FP or 8 weeks consecutive FP). There are tons of DOs in the community that take on students. I would also look at the hospital websites and see if there are DOs on staff and then contacting their offices to see if they will take you on. Otherwise you have to go through a university, OPTI (conglomeration of programs grouped together for convenience), or residency program as a "visiting student," which usually has a limited number of weeks that they will let you rotate through. The benfit is you get their scheduled didactics, possibly free meals, and free housing. You won't have to worry about this for another 3 years. But fourth year is defintiely doable.

They are currently changing the 3rd year requirements, trying to place all of their students either in IA, OH, or MI for core hospital and clinic (8 months) during 3rd year, but you have a couple of months of electives that you can set up outside of IA if you choose.

It sounds confusing now, but it is easier when you start doing it. It is harder to set up visiting rotations and stay in one town, due to the fact that most major hospitals go through the closest medical school and have an agreement with them (this means you are limited usually 8 weeks at that site). If you can choose a city with many hospitals affiliated with multiple medical schools (i.e. NYC/NJ), then you shouldn't have a problem getting an apartment and commuting to each site. Basically, you'll have to plan ahead.

The closest affiliations we have out there right now is affiliated hospitals in NJ and PA. Search for DMU hospitals or rotations slots, because it should be on this site. Hope this helps a little.

anyone got any recs for me about scrambling? I'm not sure I'm gonna match NS. Things have taken an unexpected turn and I may not have a spot, so any of you who have any type of advice for me I'll take it! Thanks.

Thanks a lot for the help! It does sound confusing now, but I know it will work out okay.

Well, the results came out yesterday around lunch...

I'm going to be in a transitional year in Portsmouth. First choice location, second choice program.

After a TY I'm going to (with a nearly 100% likelihood) deploy for 2-3 years then get to start residency training.

I have to say I'm a little disapointed.

I heard of another military scholarship person that got the similar situation. I wonder if they are doing that to all of you guys/gals....? I hope not. Stick with it, portier. Maybe you should just marry creamaster and get dibs on where you go because you have alittle wife at home. We love you, big P.

What makes you say that? Is there any way you can scramble into surgery TY and then try to get into NS later?

It might just be the operational tempo. Iraq has a heavy doctor requirement, so it pays to have more bodies ready to deploy there...especially if they have a penis...which is a prerequisite for a lot of Marine billets.

Congrats, Portier!! You've got a job for next year! Even though it's not 100% what you wanted, I remember talking to you and you saying that this is a very viable backup and you'd be happy with it. I think you're right on about the military needing doctors at this point. In any case, you are 2-3 months ahead the rest of us when it comes to knowing where you're headed after graduation. They're lucky to have you.

You're right. It's good to be set up already. I'm also busy figuring out how my life is going to "be."

The plan is: internship (1 year), deployment (2-3 years), residency (3 years), redeployment (2-3 years), retirement eligibility/fellowship.

This pattern puts me at my 20 year mark at the same time I'd be "ready" to do a fellowship in the Navy's eyes. We'll all be 10 years older, and I may not even want a fellowship anymore, but in any case that's the timeline.

The TY is prety good at Portsmouth, I liked the program diretor the best out of all three I met. The only thing that really hurts is thinking I wasn't good enough to get into the pediatric spot. Inferiority is a bitch.👎

The upside/downside:
1) I'll get my residency straight through, but I'll be a 35 year old intern/r1 the second time.
2) I get to deploy and earn tax free wages, which can be sweet cash, but I'll be in the desert proabably 9,000 miles away from a 66 corvette.
3) I get more ribbons and medals. No downside.
4) I earn time towards retirement, but not specialized.
5) I get to go to the sandbox which is like a badge of honor. (How long were you in the Navy? You didn't deploy? Weirdo!)
6) After deployment I'll get 3 years in one place and finally time to maybe start a family...but first I have to convince babyruth to divorce. (jk) I can at least get a dog.
7) With a TY if I decide to change my choice of fields I can apply the TY to SOME other specialties. FP? IM? I don't know.
8) I'll get to treat trauma, but I'll have to treat trauma.

I'm getting over the disapointment...and it's making me pay more attention in FP clinic to know that I'll be doing this for the next 4 years.

 You are always the most well thought out person I know. I'm rotating with a girl who got surgery at Bethesda...7/10 who matched gen surg there were girls! You may have a point with the whole penis thing and the TY.

You made a lot of good points there, man. So when you come back for the peds residency, do you have to do it at the Navy sites or can you do a civilian program? Do you have to be deployed the second time after residency?

Sorry...I am curious about all this and what you're going to be doing. 😳

Sorry...I am curious about all this and what you're going to be doing. 😳

Let's see:
1) After deploying for my 2-3 years I can apply Navy and go pretty much where I want to in the Navy. Lots of non-prior service guys just do one more year of deployment then get out of the Navy altogether.

2) If I wanted to do a civilian residency I could apply, but I'm not sure how that would work since what the Navy needs changes yearly as docs get out and stay in and all that.

3) After the residency there is a near 100% chance of getting a utilization tour. That's usually at a remote location (Diego Garcia, Yokuska, Okinawa, etc.) where they need pediatricians but you'll be on your own. I imagine you could also get somewhere like Sigonella, Rota, Honolulu, etc., but they call that preferred and counts the same as a stateside tour at any base. The next tour after that would definitely be an operational tour or an overseas tour....however, there are exceptions.

Hey Big P, sorry it didn't pan out according to plan for ya. The cool thing is that you get to do a little more time doing medicine stuff before you absolutely commit to peds. Gives you time to rethink whether or not you should base your career choice on desire to check whether or not a little boys balls have dropped.

On a side note, after my interview last friday the wife and I went to Scores near O'hare airport. It was the first strip club I've ever been at that didn't have a pole. The poor girls didn't seem to know what to do. Apparently it's really hard to just go up there and shake your groove thing without a pole to grind on.

Interviewed in VA today. It's a nice area, nice program but brand new. I am getting nervous about stuff, but I guess I can just do a TY and re-apply. That's life always hitting with a rusty nailed 4x4 when you think things are going well:laugh: Sorry about your woes too bernard.

Hello my masters,
quick question concerning our radiology class. How is the test? They are giving us 12 lectures in less than a week and throwing in the exam a day before anatomy. Any input would be great.
J

Jbone,

Radiology test isn't bad at all (or at least it wasn't last year). Just learn the basics of what is good for what (like MRI for brain over CT), what is characteristically seen on films for the specific diseases they talk about, etc. It's definitely not a test to stress about. You should do fine.

I called the school & asked them to send me the 2006 Match list, which seems to have arrived today. Maybe I'm not understanding it too well. Does it sound about right that 98 participated in the AMA match and 84 in the AOA match?

Of course, I don't know how the individual programs actually rank, and I realize that it's hard to understand much about the value of a match list, and to me, it's more important how many people got their first choices, but some of these names are pretty impressive at first glance. Does surgery-preliminary indicate if they have a place to go for 2nd year? (The program codes are listed here....maybe I can look them up - I'll try...)

Radiology was a very easy test from what I remember, but I don't remember much anymore! I can't wait to be done with all this bull****.

That's probably pretty accurate for numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if our class had even higher numbers of allopathic matchers. I didn't even register for the osteo match. Not sure how the list is organized to comment on the prelim matchers but it sounds like they've got their first year down and want to go into surgery. Call me the crazy FP guy if I'm wrong. Does the list say whether it was their first choice or not?

No the list doesn't say if it is their first choice or not - too bad. I think that is a great thing to know when looking at the list. There were about 16 "No match" listed. Wish I knew more about how to evaluate this stuff. Hospitals I've heard of, like Mayo in MN, Hopkins, etc. Many allo matches in anesthesia, also radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology... Competitive specialties in the osteo match like anesthesia, ortho, diagnostic radiology, plastic surgery, neurosurgery...

It surprised me so many went the allo match route - you didn't even register for the osteo match? Did you take the USMLE or are you using your COMLEX score?

He didn't take the USMLE, he's just that big of a rockstar.

Radiology test was total cake, you'll be fine.

I guess I should qualify why I didn't register for the osteo match. Lucky and I are couple's matching and it's easier to do through the allo match.....just my opinion. Plus with the different match dates, I didn't want to risk matching early and then be in different parts of the country for residency.

Also I'm going into FP. There are hundreds of programs out there that are very DO friendly that do not require the USMLE. Very few programs actually require the USMLE....it's more a matter of being able to judge your COMLEX score...which many allo program directors don't understand....but some do.

In the end, for me, it wasn't worth registering for the osteo match since I wouldn't rank any of their programs and in the worst case scenario of scrambling, there are plenty of allopathic programs in family practice that I'm really not worried about matching somewhere. Hope that helps....but I would strongly consider taking the USMLE if you plan on doing something even remotely competitive.....which I see as anything outside of the primary care fields, maybe including Psych and ER to a certain extent. They want to see that you can be competitive on an equalizer like standardized exam. Good luck!

Taking PE on Tuesday--wish me luck! Have a great holiday everyone!

While it sorta blows not getting my first choice for residency training, here's what it feels like now:

1) Keep your reading general (focus some), but a TY is very broad, as will be the time I spend deployed (ID, Trauma, Sports Medicine).

2) Don't stresss it. You lost out on your chance to train straight through. There's nothing to be done aobut it now.

a.) Caveat to that, no amount of "brilliance" or "dimness" will change your
"fate" so there's nothing to be anxious over. That is, your destination
is the fleet, so don't be in a rush or press yourself too hard.

3) There's no reason to cram in board studying for step 3 since a ty IS step 3, so just pay attention at work and read about what you do in internship and it'll be easy-ish.

I read "Stranger in a Strange Land" over the last week. Very interesting read if you have time for it. Published in 1964. About an earth orphan raised on Mars who comes home and acclimatizes.

Good luck to everyone on their match coming up.

👍

I miss you and your crazy books sitting on my bookshelf. I knew that if I ever needed a break, I could just go and pick one.

The man and I are leaving KC this weekend. Kind of glad to go, after all the crazy deaths I've seen here. I'm sure it happens everywhere else, but to me, KC = getting shot.

Yeah, crazy books = strange to talk to Ray. I read Camus' The Stranger last weekend, and I'm going to read Metamorphosis by Kafka as soon as I finish LT's Theory of Pets (by my main man SK). When I went to PCOM-GA to talk about rotations (they invited me) I mentioned Psychosocial Aspects of Medical Training and they all laughed at me....I guess it is a strange book to own.

Lucky, ask your old man to post what he knows about the newest processors (dual core versus single....2 2.8ghz's versus 4.xghz). I know he's up on all that because he's had a super cool gaming box picked out since Mason City.

I wish we had a class on the match process...................it could be the must underhanded thing I've been involved with in my life.

Yeah, it's a pretty complicated process, with all the different matches and rules, etc. It's such a big game too, because everybody ends up saying the same things, and you don't really know if they truly mean it. We've gotten to the point where we've started cancelling a couple interviews...it's such a burden on time and money. We feel semi-comfortable with what we have so far, but unlike some people out there, we probably won't be "signed out of the match" since we're coupled and that takes a lot of work for everybody. Oh well...I'll celebrate come March!

How did the PE treat you, babyruth? Anything exciting around the testing center? We go the middle of February.

I wish we had a class on the match process...................it could be the must underhanded thing I've been involved with in my life.

You mean underhanded by like, the program directors? Gulp!
Please fill in the naiive pre-med getting ready to head off to... I dunno (either DMU or UMDNJ?)!

The PE is piece of cake. The cases are'nt even half as complicated as Wattleworths. You gotta be ready to write fast though. You cant write like we did in SPALS...not enough time. Make it more like a surgical H&P. Lucky definately go check out the Mutter museam in Philly they have some crazy **** in there.

Portier, congrats on portsmouth and keep your hands off of babyruth, if she ever leaves her man I've got dibbs.

the head diaper daddy😱

I just interviewed at UMDNJ for residency, I was very underwhelmed.
