DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
also I think offering you the secondaries has nothing to do with GPA or MCAT...they just look if you have met the requirements (like prereqs, made the cut-offs etc) and if you do, then they send you the secondary...

hmm... Buddy I won't be applying if I haven't done pre-req and met the cut-offs... Right? I am doing the remaining pre-reqs (English and Genetics), and I won't be doing bad on these for sure. I don't think they require pre-req be done before summer of 2011, because I know someone who has not done all the pre-reqs.

Hey guys,

For those of you who applied to KCUMB, did you get the secondary application?

I received a secondary from them 2 weeks after AACOMAS submitted my primary to the school. Since, your stats are really good 👍, I think that they might think that you are only applying to their school as a "safety net".

Thats no reason to hold it back...By you reasoning all graduate schools should reject me... further i don't subscribe to tier phenomenon in med school app...

let's say someone is a genius and really wants to attend this school for whatever reason. I don't think that's causing the delay.

KCUMB auto secondaried me too. Personally it sounds like there may had been an issue downloading your application or something.

When DMU first downloaded my application my GPA was listed as a 0.0 because AACOMAS glitched. Thankfully they were nice enough to call me about it so I knew and could deal with it. I had AACOMAS send out my file again in the next weeks batch and it worked and I suddenly caught a flood of secondaries. Just a thought. Cause secondaries are almost always based off of an arbitrary GPA cutoff thats well below a 3.8 and 36.

ahh! I checked the file that KCUMB probably downloaded...It properly shows my GPA as 3.92 and 36R... oh well I guess I am just plain unlucky, I don't know if I should call them again on Monday... I don't want to sound like a arrogant douche bag 🙁 to justify receiving a secondary using my not so bad GPA and MCAT as reasons.
Meanwhile however I have been rejected by LECOM-B, but THEY DID NOT USE MY CITIZENSHIP as reason. I wonder they didn't think I was well prepared for PBL despite having done research for the last 3 summers! I am waiting however for a reason! 😡 So freakin' dejected

do you guys happen to know if Pikeville College, School of Osteopathic Medicine accepts Canadians?

they seem to but they prefer their own students. Call them. given their low class size they might not have space this late in cycle..

Alright I need to jump in here. To the newer Canadians to this forum (DO): half of the schools listed that "accept" Canadians, do not actually. Sure you can apply, but to be accepted you need to stand out WAY above the Americans. Some of the schools you guys are listing have accepted ONE canadian in the last 10 years for example.

The big Canadian loving schools are Touro-NY, AZCOM, Western, and NSU. Sure the other schools might say they accept Canadians, but look at the statistics of Canadian acceptances. Just keep that in mind before dishing out a bunch of money. For example: I contacted LECOM-B and they told me they accepted Canadians. I applied and got a letter saying they do not accept internationals and therefore have to reject me.

As for the Genetics pre-req. There is TWO schools that require it. MSU and KCUMB (or maybe Pikeville). Those schools are not known to accept many Canadians. So if its a hassle to take the course, dont bother

not trying to crush anyones dreams, but Ive noticed a huge spring up of Canadian posters here who arent known to post on DO forums and I wouldnt want false info going around.

Good luck🙂

This man speaks the truth, listen to him. I applied to almost the entire Canadian friendly list and after secondaries only heard back from NSU and AZCOM and was accepted at both. So honestly don't waste your money. That Canadian friendly school list badly needs to be updated.

And, to make the future even more bleak. NSU's website now says they no longer accept Canadian applicants. I think I was probably the last/one of the last to be accepted.

hey guys
I just posted a thread which you can find here:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=10324494#post10324494

If you can answer it, please do. Appreciate it.👍

Thanks

haha wow well first off you are a total UBC pre-med😛, your lowest mark is a B? Thats not academic difficulty are you joking lol let me guess Chem 233. I was in the biochem program in second year (back when it was hard) and have a D in Math 200. As you know, we cant retake courses at UBC unless you fail. Anyway, my D is academic difficulty.

As for shadowing, you CAN shadow a DO. I went to UBC and live in Vancouver, I was able to find one. You can too🙂 dont give up. Also they will think its a little weird you are Canadian with no experience shadowing a DO, in my opinion. Not to offend you but definitely find to get LOR from

good luck

😀 I dont go to UBC...I think I told you in the other private message a while back..i go to SFU....anyhow yeah a B....and honestly I just did not study for it so it won't even be considered a difficulty...I talked also a little about my bad MCAT mark and how I improved by 8 points..is it good to include it?is it considered academic?

I asked my family physician (my GP for 7 years now) to write me a LOR and he did...so I don't know if that's good or bad cuz I haven't even shadowed a doc but have a LOR...

I think it's a little late finding a DO, shadowing him/her, and getting a LOR, and sending it out (it takes like 2 months)...maybe good idea if I was applyin next year again...

Just talked with Linda Ferrif in the Admissions Office, and she said NSU is still accepting internationals. Phew!! Thank you for "helping" me thru a horrendous weekend!

Guys I understand you are just trying to act as guides and I really appreciate you for that. The question was really why I didn't receive a secondary from KCUMB... I believe I am competitive and so is everybody on this forum: we all have GPAs and MCATs higher than an average American student. Although I completely understand that they will prefer their own students (even though the schools are private and they officially say they do not distinguish between applicants). But in any case, my message to my fellow Canadians will be to apply to every school that you believe you are competitive for.

This thread is great. It's sad that I came across this after submitting my application and most secondaries.

congratz to every1 who got accepted!!!

Question for people accepted to NSU- Did you guys send WES eval before or after interview?

Hey VPP, KCUMB is sending secondaries really late... I recieved a secondary from them six weeks after submitting my primary back in early September. Maybe they really are behind on reviewing the apps. Good advise on applying to every school you are competitive for. This forum IS nice on finding out which schools has greater rate of accepting Canadians!

Just got interview invite to Western U for Dec 11th. Im soooo stressed about it because I will be interviewing in New York Dec 8th.....and flying back to Vancouver arriving Dec 10th at 1am.....will be in Van for like 5 hours then fly to Cali....practice and relax for the night...than interview 8am in Cali. haha I will have been in 2 countries, 2 states, and one province within 12 hours😛

do we need a liberal art LOR for NSU? can we use another LOR?like a science prof or employer?

guys a quick question

how do you make sure what schools accept Interfolio? some say they do and some don't even mention? do I have to email each one and ask them?

👍

Thank you!

For interfolio you check CIB. Every school state whether or not they accept it.

Thank you... DMU sent an invite early Oct as soon as they received my primary. They have this thing where if you meet their minimum requirement they sent you an automatic invite. I interviewed their Nov 4. I got AZCOM on Nov 4. I had interview invite for Nov 5 actually... since I was already booked to return to Canada I couldn't go to Glendale that soon.

Touro-NY and Western guys were complete long time before. But hang in there!

I wish to join you for the Western interview so badly! I will sell a kidney for that place! When you were you complete for Western mauve?

I was complete for Touro Sept 29th and complete at Western somewhere in early October (they didnt accept my Computer Science reference letter as a Science Letter lol so I had to track down another prof). Hope that gives you an idea and helps🙂

Keep posting updates guys! Its good to keep each other motivated, I mean we are the best😛 we didnt win gold for nothing

congratz VPP
thank you drc- I am very late (mostly completed in Nov so I will have to wait it out)- good luck with interviews.

 Western - and its students I'm sure - would appreciate that very much in Anatomy. But if you don't mind, why would you bestow that honour on Western vs other schools?🙂
i submitted stuff in oct but i think they got everything in the first week of Nov. I also had some phy credit issue to clear up.

Western is just the best 😍. I love the IPE thing among many things. I had everything in during the first week of Nov as well.. Hopefully I will listen soon from them:xf:.

VPP, do you know what the min requirements were for DMU for the automatic interview? Just curious cuz I got rejected pre-secondary lol

Thanks

What's up fellow Canadians?

I'm a Canadian who got in to Western University (using my American citizenship). I've been in the USA since high school, but my father still lives in Toronto. I have a few questions that I was hoping you could answer:

1) Can I still get financial aid from Ontario? I didn't apply to medical school as an Ontario resident but I visit regularly for summers.

2) Are Canadian specialties as open to DO's as the American ones? Is is feasible to get into an orthopedic surgery residency as a DO? I know it's difficult no matter what school you go to, but relatively speaking, is there a significant amount of prejudice towards DO's?

3) Is it true that with recent reforms that the brain drain is now reversed, with more US doctors heading to Canada than Canadian ones heading to the USA?

Thanks everyone!

NO to all three questions.

For first, I think you can get funding if your dad is canadian citizen or if you still hold canadian PR. you will have to check with financial institution.

2)- it's going to be very very very tough- highly unlikely.

3) No for sure.

hey guys

I was about to submit my secondary for KCUMB and I came across the following:

"As part of the secondary application, applicants who are not U.S. citizens or do not have permanent U.S. resident status are required to provide the Admissions Office with a copy of their INS documentation and VISA."

well how serious is this? I thought that we should worry about that after we get accepted?

Have you guys come across such a thing?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Regarding the competitive specialty, Am I corect assuming that post residency, positions are easier to come by then?

Yes. if you really want to get in a competitive field, the safest bet is to complete residency in US and apply here whenever there is opening. It's easier to find a placement than residency spot.

Hey UBC,

I am not really sure but I think it's for the non-canadian international, who would need visa for interview. College would not sponsor visa paper for interview. We don't need to worry about it. If you do decide to call them, can you please update it here?

Just wondering, Has any1 got an interview from KCUMB yet?

I found this on the Canadian Osteopathic Association website (http://www.osteopathic.ca)

------------------------
NEWS BULLETIN
CANADIAN STUDENTS

Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) has announced its intent to recruit 20-25 qualified Canadian students each year over the next 2-3 years to help promote osteopathic medicine in Canada. Graduates of MSUCOM as well as other American Osteopathic Association accredited osteopathic medical schools are entitled to full practice in Canada. They are allowed entrance to the Medical Council of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the College of Family Physicians of Canada examinations. These graduates can complete post graduate training in Canada or the United States. They are eligible to practise through the various Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons across Canada and are given the same practice rights as their allopathic (M.D.) colleagues. MSUCOM has taken the initiative to recruit qualified Canadian applicants and will be setting a special tuition rate for these students, the amount to soon be determined. Interested applicants are encouraged to review the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medical Schools web site where one can link to each of the osteopathic medical schools. It is not too late to apply this year. The Canadian Osteopathic Association encourages applicants for future years to review all the prerequisite requirements. Osteopathic medical schools admit on a rolling basis and as such it is beneficial to have your application ready to go, including MCAT results, when the application cycle begins typically in May for the following year.

------------------------

I think MSU's OOS tuition is $70k and I didn't bother applying there. Maybe, someone should email them and ask what will be the approximate tuition...

Perhaps, initiative like one will result in more recognition of DOs in Canada and is good news for people like us who are going to a DO school next year. :xf:

this just gives a lot of hope...I wish other DO schools start doing this....I'm really optimistic about the future of DO in the world....not all physicians are MDs around the world....countries like Australia, Britain, and many more graduate doctors that are equivalent to MDs.

While I think thats great what MSUCOM is doing for Canadians, MSUCOM is an incredibly time consuming pain in the butt to apply to (their secondary). They are the only medical school I know of that makes each reference fill out 4 pages of forms about you, and a letter of reference is not good enough. Think about the average applicant for a second. most people get their reference letters from profs they had 2-3 years ago or doctors they shadowed in the past. While most of my reference wrote AMAZING letters for me, I know none of them would be comfortable filling out 4 pages of questions about me. To do this and get a good reference, you would need to know the reference for like 2 years. This is not the typical scenario for references as an undergrad at the average Canadian university, in my opinion.

For this snobish (as I like to think of it) reason I will not be applying MSU. On top of this, their tuition is absolutely ridiculous. If you know anything about how returning to Canada works (honestly, without getting optimistic...theres a difference), it makes no difference is you attend MSU for this "program" rather than any other school accepting Canadians.

In my opinion, its a cash grab for them....and there is much better DO schools for Canadians

that's exactly why I won't apply...I need to beg my referees to send their LOR they have already written (maybe takes 10 minutes? of their time), I don't know what I would have to do to get them to answer 4 pages of stupid questions which have all been already covered in the LOR.

I won't take such a strong position against MSU here, but I do agree that they are doing themselves a dis-service by the letter requirement. I can understand their logic. The letter is a more uniform way to grade everyone since you have no idea how well thought out your letter writer will be when writing your letter, whether he will focus on areas the school cares about, etc. It makes their work easier because it makes it easier to compare letters.

Yet from a practical point of view, it's just not possible for everyone to research the letter requirements beforehand. I actually finished my essay for MSU and when I saw the letter requirement I ended up not sending in my application. I have too much respect for my letter writers' time.
