DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Less than week and I should hear from Touro. Having applied late, I'm still hoping for another interview, but I would definitely go to Touro if given the opportunity.

Just to add, they mentioned at our class meeting that they accepted 16 Canadian residents into the class of 2015. The AOA is interested in promoting osteopathic medicine in Canada, and I hear a rumor of a Canadian Osteopathic Medical School in the future. Not sure how soon a Canadian Osteopathic program would occur though.

O wow, 16!! Could you please elaborate more on this Canadian Osteopathic Medical School? I heard some rumors about it here too in California (but it was more of a regional "family friend initiative" type of thing).

I don't know anything more about the Canadian Osteopathic Medical School. Just heard that the AOA was considering one from our class meeting.

Notice anything in this match list from Touro-NY? The type of residency is not known, but it shows that coming back to Canada is a possibility in the future.

So TouroCOM-NY released the locations they matched to. We don't have a list with the field matched into becaus <insert FERPA reason here>. We're supposed to have in the next month as we figure out for the first time how to do a opt-in vs opt-out system on releasing our graduate information publicly. Here are the matched hospitals though.

Its amusing that we sent the most people, 7, to Nassau, where we don't really have any affiliation. Its just a nice hospital in Long Island.

Personally, I don't want to come back to Canada, but I do think it will be easier for DO's to practice in Canada.

wow Touro NY did well 🙂 , proud to say i got in there!

Thats also awesome news about 16 Canadians getting into MSU. Not to hate but those bastards didnt post once in this forum and probably just leached the info 😛 unless one of the regular posters here got in that im not aware of.....

Im getting so excited to start school, how about the rest of you guys??? Excited to see you guys at western 😀

We have MSU confirmation people!

Canadian Applicants
Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) plans to recruit 20-25 qualified Canadian students each year over the next several years to help promote osteopathic medicine in Canada. Graduates of MSUCOM as well as other American Osteopathic Association accredited osteopathic medical schools are entitled to full practice in Canada. They are allowed entrance to the Medical Council of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the College of Family Physicians of Canada examinations. These graduates can complete post-graduate training in Canada or the United States. They are eligible to practice through the various Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons across Canada and are given the same practice rights as their allopathic (M.D.) colleagues. MSUCOM has taken the initiative to recruit qualified Canadian applicants and has set a special tuition rate for these students through scholarships. Interested applicants are encouraged to review scholarship information on the MSUCOM webpage (http:www.com.msu.edu/ss/scholarships.html).
MSUCOM and the Canadian Osteopathic Association encourage applicants to review all prerequisite requirements. MSUCOM offers admission on a rolling basis and as such it is beneficial to have application ready for submission when the application cycle begins, typically in May, for the following summer start.

The next question is, how big are MSU classes? Can we assume that 20-25 make up at least 10% of their class?

Where did you guys stay when you interviewed at AZCOM? I'll be there next week.

Typically, we have about 200 at the East Lansing campus, 50 at each og the south east campuses, which are Detroit Medical Center and Macomb. The telecom to the other sites. The lecturer will rotate to all the sites, and everyone gets the same materials and lecture content.

i just received an email from western regarding the tuition.

in it, it says that the tuition for 2011/2012 is approved to be $47,515/year.

Is this supposed to be some kinda joke?? if its april fools day, it's not funny!!

What's wrong with that amount UBC?

Also, thanks for your input thumbz

Thanks for the info. So 20-25 Canucks would be approximately 10% of their capacity.. That really is something imho... As far as I know, there is no other US med school that would dedicate TEN PERCENT of their class to Canadians... 😍

ya, inflation/tuition increase is around 5%/2500 dollars a year. I wouldn't be surprised if it hit 60,000 by 2014...

Marquette Dental school was 30000 back in 1998!

that's what i'm sayin...the interview package said it's 45K for first year!! well as of now western is more expensive than AZCOM!!

That is what they are hitting up us out of state students. So the you all will be getting a better deal than the OOS students that attend MSUCOM. Luckily my tuition is on the US Military😀

TouroNY seems to be very reasonable: 35K/year

Touro not 35k. I got in this year and received the official financial information for 2011/2012. It's 39k plus change. So 40k. That's why I wasn't shocked about western.

bummer 👎

when did you interview? are you attending? have you paid deposit?

TouroNY seems to be very reasonable: 35K/year

Ya but the cost of living in New York is ridiculous, a lot more than Pomona or the areas around it.

Besides that, I would pay an exta $7000 a year to get a much better education at Western anyday

$47,000 is a lot yes....but its an AMERICAN private medical school. Havent you guys learned anything about the recession 😛 Americans arent exactly noble prize winners when it comes to debt and ding ding ding I suspect university could be a start to people having $100,000 debt. Add a house to that and goodbye economy:laugh:

But seriously, i know that much sucks. Thats why a small part of me wants to practice in the states for a few years...so I can pay back loans etc

I think no matter where you attend you will receive a good education. Touro seemed very dedicated to helping students - even as far a matching. One of the deans said there were a few in the scramble, but things looked good.

Marquette - was not known for high board scores, but I did extremely well. Its all up to the student and how you take advantage of resources.

+1. There is no evidence that western's education is substantially better then Touro's. They killed it this year, and it was their first match. I'd rather be in nyc anyway. Both the city and Touro are nice and multicultural places. Didn't get that feeling when I saw the breakdown of western's student demographic.

To UBC - I interviewed after the new year and will definitely be going as I already paid the deposit. GL to you 🙂

I also really liked Touro. Will get to see AZCOM this week.

AZCOM just approved tuition to $50,1xx for this year. So don't worry western is still cheaper than us. Ugh, I'll miss paying $6000 a year for my undergrad lol

😱

People, these tuition prices, coupled with 6.8% interest for student loans, is absolutely insane. I really think we're approaching that point where it is no longer economically justifiable to take on the debt, interest, and opportunity cost of a career in medicine... .... Awww, who am I kidding - i'd still do it if it were double the price!

I wonder what the tuition fee for private MD schools would be!! about same? anyone?

At UBC we always had people protesting tuition (which was only $2000 a year without books) and I used to attempt to explain to them that we pay 1/10th of what the US pays and that we are very lucky. It was like trying to convince a rock that its a tree haha

Even our tuition was cheap by Canadian standards....ahh RIP cheap tuition:laugh:

How did you guys like AZCOM? I'm there this friday and staying at a friend that lives nearby the campus. Did anyone rent a car??

We don't pay 6.8% interest like the US students. The Canadian banks that I went to all give you prime (plus 0.5 or 1% sometimes depending on the bank). So for now thats not too bad....who knows what'll happen though.

Plus once you go start talking to people at the banks and get the average repayment time and stuff it really starts to sound less scary. You don't even pay anything except interest until a year after your residency and so if you can live cheap then you have lots of time during residency to try to knock some of it down before you're even paying much on your loan.

It still makes me want to puke everytime I open my online banking and see my disgustingly huge line of credit on there. 😱

At least the dollar is par though because five years ago we would all have been paying double.

Which bank did you go to? I'm going to try pay most of it with the sale of my house and practice, but I'm still initially going to need a loan.

I feel really bad for my American colleagues.. Whenever I talk about our prime +0.5-1% interest rate.. their eyes would light up with envy lol... their fafsa interest rate is disgusting... I really wonder if its some kind of ploy by the US government to recruit docs to the army as it pays for everything.. (A lot of recruitment going on at WesternU)...

Any of the major banks, CIBC, TD, BMO, MD consult has the largest one at 200k (they are a company not a bank though). They all have similar rates, and your home bank might even hook you up with lower interest than their advertised. I personally got a CIBC one after talking to the TD ppl.

Thanks I currently deal with TD and just made an appt. in case it happens this year.

I really liked it...no complaints whatsoever...best interview food, free parking, nice campus, extraordinary match list, super high COMLEX and USMLE pass rates...

I had a car rented but I rented the car in Las Vegas so I couls drive to Phoenix 😀

do you know if the class is full at this time/or not?

I'm not sure if the class is full, but I just plan on going into the interview and doing my best. Being non traditional, I assume that is what my interview will revolve around. I'm looking forward to some nice weather! We just got snow yesterday 🙁

I'm not sure... They have plans like IBR where if you do a few years at an underserved location, they forgive your loans (time during residency also counts). I'm going to have to talk to the financial aid people about exactly which plan is optimal, but it seems that it may actually be cheaper to go with the american loan options (I'm a dual citizen).

Yeah, the military seems like a bad idea since you can take out a bunch of loans and have them forgiven just by picking an underserved site. I'd rather do that than serve in Benghazi as a GMO officer taking orders from nurses.

Anyone know how having a car down there works for us?

I sort of want to sell my car in Canada and buy an older and cheaper car once I'm down there just to have some extra money.

My questions:

Can I insure, register etc down there? Can I get a driver's license down there or do I use my Canadian one? If I am a Canadian insured and registerd in the US do I get hassled if I want to drive my car home to Canada next summer for a few months?

The other alternative is to keep my car and take it down to Arizona with me...but it's sort of the same. Would I keep it insured in Canada and how long can I have it in the US for at a time (is it under 6 months?)

Lol, sorry for all the questions!! Maybe if someone knows who I should call to find out that would be a better way to go about this.

When I lived in Milwaukee, I traded in my ontario license for a wisconsin license. I never got around to changing insurance, or even looking into it. The only thing I didn't like was having ontario plates - kind of makes you stand out.

I just got an email from TOURO - NY and I am also on the Waitlist HIGH. Off to AZCOM tomorrow for an interview friday.

Good grief - I received an email today saying I was accepted at MSUCOM. I was complete with them in early September and heard nothing until today. I've already put a deposit in with KCUMB and I'm pretty sure that is where I will go (I like the systems based curriculum), but I think I'll call MSUCOM and ask if the "Canadian tuition rates" apply for this year and whether they plan on working with Canadian hospitals for clerkship rotation options.

Its around 50000 - they told me 20000 off the out of state tuition. Where are you from? I didn't apply here, because I applied late in the cycle. East Lansing is about a 6 hour drive from my house.

Congrats...both are great competitive schools! Glad to see another Canadian going the DO route.

Thanks. I think I must have been on the waitlist and not known. Weird.

Anyway, I'm from Toronto so from a physical distance perspective it is closer, but with a direct flight on AC from KC to TO, time wise they are pretty similar (if you include wait times at the airport + the 2 hour flight time).

Not sure if any of you have started to look into Health Insurance which im sure is required at any US school.....but this site was recommended on my classes FB group

ehealthinsurance.com

I was checking it out and it seems simple to use. Not excited to pay for health insurance ahh dam the US 😛 . If anyone has any recommendations on health insurance can you post please? Thanks
