The Emory OB/Gyn by first glance may be one of the most impressive matches of the year thusfar. Based on conversation above, OB is becoming similar to ortho and all that in competitiveness
Dude hold up. You can still match somewhere in OB with below average scores and no research. Comparing it to ortho is going to give some poor OB gunner an aneurysm when they read that.

I think a bigger problem is too many people are still giving advice about matching OB like it’s 10 years ago and you just needed a pulse to get in.

Agreed it’s not that hard landing low tier or medium tier. I see plenty of schools on here having 4 plus matches at decent places.

My buddy at CCOM matched ortho in Modesto, CA.

Any plastics matches? Does anyone know how many former AOA programs there are?

No plastics matches this year. There are no AOA programs in plastics. There are a handful of former AOA GS places with plastics fellowships.

Dang. Thanks for the info. Looks like matching integrated plastics as a DO is gonna be next to impossible moving forward.

I mean it doesn’t change cause of the merger it’s always been like that. Most DO plastic surgeons go through the GS to plastics fellowships pathway

Yeah, that's true, but I've seen a few integrated AOA grads here and there. I'm guessing that those programs got closed down secondary to the merger.

Nah it was always like that. Integrated Plastics will probably always be anywhere from 0-4 a year. It's a lot about luck too, even the people who match only get like 1-3 interviews. IP has the highest percentage of residents coming from the top 40 schools by NIH funding as well, at like 40% I think, so very top heavy.

I think you are thinking of "independent" grads. For some reason the plastics fellowship is often referred to as an independent residency. There has never been an AOA integrated plastics residency as far as I know.

Yeah, always knew that it was insanely hard, but if you were pursuing an AOA program you obviously wouldn't have to deal with the bias that makes it that much harder.

I could've sworn there were AOA graduates. Looked it up and I guess you're right, those never existed. Ah well. Gotta be some kind of killer to match integrated as a DO.

What's the deal with this anyway?

Is IP more anti-DO than other surgical subspecialties (perhaps they believe M.D. looks better in italics than D.O. on the website/billboard) or is it just crowded with top tier MD candidates trying to become the next Dr. 90210?

I think theres like <5 plastics AOA “residencies” like grey said aka 3 years after a GS residency, i know of one at botsford. Idk any integrated ones either. Best shot would be to match GS at one of these places, or land an academic GS spot.

Or be 11/10 hot and aim for UCSF

I think AG’s comment was spot on with specifically stating, NIH funding. Let’s sideline bias for a second and talk as if the environment was meritocratic...

The applicants coming from heavily funded NIH schools are just producing so much more for the amount of work they put in. They have the resources and support to dominate.

It could be an anti-DO thing (probably plays a decent roll) but we’ll probably never know because we’ll most likely never get a true apples-to-apples comparison.

This. The people who are applying to plastics largely come from elite schools, and they are the elite applicants from those schools. No reason to look at DO's when you have an army of 250/AOA USMD applications on your desk. Honestly the best way to match IP is have a great app, be very good looking, and then get lucky and match one of the places you audition at. We had a plastics match last year and they only got 2 interviews and rotated at both those places.

Best shot would be to match GS at one of these places, or land an academic GS spot.

Nah you don't even need an academic spot. Just a solid program that has resources to get you faculty mentors and some plastics research. Obviously an academic position will make your route easier, but people have matched plastics fellowships from some of the better DO programs.

I dunno about integrated plastics, but there were definitely a few osteopathic ENT/facial plastics programs. Not sure if they’re still around.

Those are just ENT programs. For some reason the DO world called them "ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery," when they are the same as MD Otolaryngology programs.

"Top 40 NIH Funded" is also the polite way that Charting Outcomes references "top medical school."

I agree, but there are >0 matches in other surgical subspecialties, where the qualities you mention are also at play. Ja feels?

IP also has a limited number of spots. 291 applicants for 180 spots this year, and only 13 DO applicants. I know one of them, only had one interview, and ended up matching his 2nd choice GS program. IP might be the most competitive field in medicine, even more so than Derm.

Kind of both. They're about as anti-DO as it gets. The only other fields I can think of that may be somewhat more biased are ophtho, neurosurg, and CT, but they're the same for all intents and purposes.

You have to think about the fact that there's only ~180 spots. That's one of the fewest number of spots in all specialties. Plus consider the fact that the average applicant is a baller from a US MD. I imagine the only way you'll win out is if your daddy is the PD, you just absolutely won the hearts and minds of everyone on your aways, or you did multiple research years.

Huh, weird. I thought that since plastics is an ENT fellowship, the name implied an integrated program.

IR held the title for the last two years if I recall correctly. Really wonder who'll take the spot this year. People say IR was only popular because it was "new", "sexy", and ultra competitive. But I think once people found out about the downsides, it probably cooled off a little. That's my theory. We'll see what Charting Outcomes has to say.

Yeah thats def my b i def conflated academic with programs w/ resources and strong mentors & subspecialty rotations. They can definitely exist separately, which is something not always said on sdn. There are some sick community programs out there with resources and mentors akin to academic programs

IR is def a top 3 most overrated specialty among med students nowadays.

the everyday work of IR blows. the cool tech and so called respect are just a smoke show. That prestige only belongs to NSG or Plastic.

I need to summon all the IRs on here so that they can descend on you for this post lol
