"That's not Duke's hospital"
"It's still derm no matter what hospital is named!!"
"Yeah, they actually matched pathology not derm. The admin messed it up again"

Happens every year. How is this possible?!

I still remember someone skipping the AOA match and matching ortho at Mayo I think when I was a premed and someone was still like “Yeah it’s not that competitive. No one wants to live in Rochester.” “They probably had connections anyway!”

It’s a multifaceted problem that’s nearly impossible to deduce... But I’ll take a stab at it.

1) Attend a DO school
2) Attend a branch campus of a DO school
3) Listen to advisors that have EdDs
4) Just listening to your garbage DO school
5) Attend a branch campus in rural Utah that’s away from the states core health infrastructure

Hot damn it was actually a lot simpler to figure out than I thought!

I love how many of my classmates drink the “DO school residency advisor” koolaid. Its funny how many of these advisors downplay the importance of Step scores, Clerkship grades, research (specialty dependent) and letters in an application and harp on community service and AODs (areas of distinction)-Most DO grads I have talked to in residency now that had super impressive matches did their own thing and ignored their advisors/schools advice (which imo is great advice). I am already getting off topic and its not even friday yet-ill stop lmao

I can't believe Utah is opening another DO school... Noorda match 4 years will be awful.

I will say that while ACOM has its faults, our advisors were great about hammering home us taking STEP, focusing on clerkship grades and research.

People like to kid themselves that new DO schools are somehow acceptable places to train. Honestly not much better than going to St. George’s at this point.

It’s going to be absolute trash. The U lost the battle trying to convince lawmakers to block the creation of these schools.

No one should ever consider going to a new DO school. It’s just not worth the money.

Make a new thread and it will receive the on topic attention you crave and the title will attract someone who knows the answer!

That said, if it's anything like the Larkin rads program... well, it ain't gonna be good.

That's awesome! Really looking forward to seeing the overall matchlist and the institutions students have matched at. Also, anxiously waiting to see KCU's match rate this year as I have heard crazy stories of very competitive students not being able to match.

Yeah it’ll be interesting. IIRC RVU-CO had a ridiculous number of surgery matches last year. Maybe the success isn’t translating to Utah but I want to see the official data first.

Or LMU DCOM. Basically advising was like apply to 500 fm programs or you won’t match. Actually I was told that with 100%tile boards so I’m assuming they told that to everyone. Bunch of other top students were told same thing. Such a joke that place is.


or my LOR sucked 😂 but I doubt since I got my 1.

I'm on some national subspecialty psych organization email lists, and some attendings legit brought up "psych is the new derm" in the setting of discussions about how only 3 spots in cat psych out of all categorical and combined psych didn't fill and how more spots are filled by DOs and MDs than IMGs. It was just hilarious to see it come up there.

You have advisors? At best I recall 2-3 mandatory lectures basically telling all of us to apply to a ton of AOA FM programs affiliated with my school, because ACGME programs hate DOs and we won't match.

Rarely one will have good results (e.g. I remember how CUSOM did), but new DO schools really need to be a last choice for going DO.
