If you want reasons why, ask any upperclassman there. This is just a money hungry school with the lack of any good professors and lack of administrative integrity. All they care about is getting your $9000/quarter and could care less if you succeed during school or in life after graduating. This school is such a joke-- you have been warned. Again, ask any student who is about to graduate before applying or considering any school, they will tell you the truth about the program and any pluses/minuses. I want to save as many people the heartache of dealing with the crap they made me deal with.

Well most schools care primarily about your money.

Now, I don't see a school without any plusses whatsoever. Who knows, this person may be right, but (s)he just may be a venting failout. I see blanket statements but I do not see examples of real cases of what happened to this person.

If you really want to know what the school is like, ask a few more people around about it, as well as see what recent grads are doing (not sure if it's a new school or it has had grads).

(By the way I don't go to South U., nor have I even heard about this school).

Two posts does not make this person a reliable source on a school, HOWEVER I personally do not know anything about it. Can you please give some specifics? I believe people should get all the facts so they can make a better decision themselves.

I've heard more negative things about South U than positive on these forums over the years....BUT, this is the internet, so I wouldn't draw any conclusions based off of this.

Definitely worth researching if you're applying, though.

Southuni, convincing post backed by convincing evidence--thanks. You wouldn't be trying to thin out the applicant pool to benefit yourself would you? Tool.

I would not doubt if they lost accreditation in the next few years, there have been way to many complaints against this school for them not too.

Do you have statistical evidence to back this up? Documentation?

Either way, I'm sorry if you had to go through such an experience and I know where you are coming from. I go to Albany College of Pharmacy... and believe me when I say statistically we have one of the highest attrition in the country (30%<) in P1-P4. This is due to many factors such that its a 0-6 program... However, even the transfers (all coming in with 3.8<) into this school have elevated attrition rates of nearly 10-15% (maybe higher but this was in ACP student handbook - which was no doubt polished to look better than it is). This is compared with the national attrition rate of about 6-8% for pharmacy programs. **This was why ACP was placed on probabtion. (check ACP Handbook// ACPE site for details regarding attrition rates)

I'm guessing you would not be ranting about this is you did not go to this school. This was actually one of my possible choices... but here are things to consider.

You are complaining about a three-year accelerated pharm.d program and a relatively new one at that. This school does not have a presence in industry or regional saturation. It is naturally going to be harder than say most four year programs... however with that being said... could you link articles from a reliable source that will vouch for your statements.

You keep spouting out a warning. Yet have not really given us what you are warning about. Feel free to vent, this is the internet. Please however provide proof if you wish for us to believe in you.
 
I have to agree with the previous posters. I myself would like to know what are some specifics about your complaints because my roommate is from that area and I believe is applying their next year as her number 1 for pharmacy. If there really is something that big against the school, please divulge. I also think it's worth mentioning that I met quite a few South students at ASP's Midyear Regional Meeting and they seemed happy with their school, of course they may have felt it was not the appropriate time to complain. So again, please tell.

Can anyone that attends South currently add to this thread??? I got accepted and will most likely attend...but I just saw this thread and it kinda scares me a bit.

What are some cons about South? whats wrong with it? This thread got me really curious! Please sure everything! thanks!

The OP posting this without any sort of proof (ie. ACPE probationary status like the Nova thread) does little to really discredit South U's pharmacy school. Scott80, thanks for providing a student's view. No school will have 100% student satisfaction, so whatever criticism is presented on an open forum should be taken with a grain of salt.

The lack of proof does not equate proof of non-existence. The funny thing is, I notice that both the anti and pro posts came from people who had 3 or 4 total, both less than 1 year old.

The thing with internet is anyone can claim anything, pro or against something. One can claim to be a student, one can claim to be a professor, but unless there is proof neither is more believable.

The thing with open forum and free market is: buyers beware. Anyone who invest years + a ton of money but didn't do their homework get no sympathy from me regardless of outcomes.

Can someone please explain to me why the mandatory attendance thing is such a big deal? Schools who hold that policy tend to get knocked a lot on forums, and I can't for the life of me understand why it even matters.

From what I've heard, it sounds like there's nothing wrong with South University any moreso than any pharmacy school.

And yes, if it's on the internet, it must be true. That's why Al Gore invented it in the first place. :meanie:

To me, that's all the more reason to go to class. I'm paying them a lot of money, I'm going to make sure I get my money's worth. Besides, after wearing a tie for long enough you don't even notice it and it becomes normal.

The fact is we're professionals and adults now, and while we should all be wise enough to go to every class, there shouldn't be any rule telling us we have to. We should be old enough to be making that decision on our own.

I see what you mean, but I also don't see why someone would use that as the grounds for not wanting to go to a school altogether. Deciding factor between one school and another if they get into both, maybe, but to say the school isn't worth going to at all seems to be an extreme and impractical evaluation.

I just don't get the M.O. of these yahoos who come onto forums and talk at length about how terrible a school is and how it should be avoided at all costs because it emotionally scarred them to have to wear a tie and go to class every day. Boo-hoo, wipe your tears with the big fat paycheck you'll be getting weekly after graduating.
 
I'd hate mandatory attendance + having to dress up. Then again, if this were my only choice, I'd be a fool to give up a year's salary for the sake of principle.

I like managing my own time and not having anyone else do it, so I skip classes when the midterm 2 days from now is for another class, and I can catch up with recordings later. Better use of my time that way.

And dressing up? I hate ironing...I'd show up every day in wrinkled clothing, take that.
 
I don't mind mandatory attendance b/c as others have pointed out...Why pay 30K a year for tuition if you don't want to attend classes? this isn't high school so if you don't want to be there then don't go to pharmacy school! :laugh:

But I can see why its annoying to dress up everyday...first its going to be expensive for me b/c most of my clothes are from Bebe and Arden B....(Clubbing clothes mostly...b/c thats my style) so its going to be expensive for me to buy a brand new warerobe for South. And I hate dressing up like that...I prefer wearing Bebe everyday like I always do. 😉

So what research do you suggest I do? Not sure how I am suppose to go about "researching" whether or not South is a good school...ITs three years long which is a plus and it has rotation sites everywhere in the country and its reasonably price (not cheap but reasonable!) so what else is there??
I ONLY negative thing I can say is its a small school, no one has ever heard of it...that might make it very hard for me to obtain a residency...(which I am not even sure if I want or not yet)
And of course dressing up like a dork to class everyday isn't good either. LOL...

Seriously If I got into Mercer and South I would NOT know where to go period. I obviously KNOW that Mercer is a more well known school etc. but I am not sure if its worth me taking out the extra loans. I don't know which school is better, but I do hope Mercer doesn't have a dress code though. LOL...
 
Check attrition rates, average class sizes, student-to-professor ratios, technology used/availability, student residences near campus, local crime rate/safety, whether they offer pickles with your burger or not.

during after school hours and weekends. The following dress requirements must be
followed at all times and will be enforced by faculty members. No exceptions will be

just as fhx06 mentioned, you can start with those. Think like you are about to buy a $100K stock or a house. What would would you do in term of research and fact finding to minimize your risks?

Stocks have P/E ratio, financial reports, credit ratings, market reports, comparison to peers of the industry... Education is also an investment with similar analytical tools. Research and analyze. There will always be risks with any investment, but there is no reason to take on any risks that has a greater down side than upside potential.

Mr. Sparkle, you bring up a hard point to argue against. Still, I don't believe they're asking anything overly excessive by asking students to attend class every day, especially considering what's waiting at the end of four years. Matter of personal choice, I suppose, we could banter back and forth ad nauseum about it without any resolution. I really only posted this reply so I could give you props on that sweet avatar of yours. "I am disrespectful to dirt! Can you not see that I am serious?!"

my question to you, then, is "academic performance" really what makes a good pharmacist, or rather, the only attribute we should look for in a pharmacist?

I can tell you from my personal experience working in a field full of "academic performers" that "academic performance" is a piss-poor measure of professional conduct, skill, and performance.

Anecdotal, sure, as was yours.

Mercer does not have a formal dress code. There are obviously certain situations (like if you are getting up in class to give a presentation or going to an IPPE site) when you need to dress professionally. But, for class - you see pretty much everything. However, I will say that if you show up dressed like you are going out to a club every day, you will sort of stick out in the crowd. Most people just wear jeans and sweatshirts, tees, etc. Some people do dress up more - just depending on what they have going on that day. I have also seen people in scrubs if they were going to work right after class.
 
To allay some of the fears/concerns about South...

I am currently finishing up my first year at South and I'm very happy with the school thus far. Sure there are some professors that I don't care for, the dress code can be annoying at times, as can mandatory attendance but all in all it's a good school with a high pass rate on the Naplex I believe last year's was about 97% and it only takes 3 years!!

I have been very happy with my education thus far I feel that we are learning a lot and I feel that we have some really awesome professors who make class very interesting.

As far as the dress code goes it its really not that bad. You DO NOT have to wear suits everyday. You basically just can't wear jeans and flip flops. A lot of people wear khakis and polo shirts. If that is not your style then wear skirts and dresses. Honestly at this point in your life most of you have probably had a job and most jobs require you to dress a little nicer than jeans and that's all this school is asking you to do. Honestly I was a bit concerned here too...but it's so not a big deal!!

My biggest issue is that we can't have any food in drink anywhere in the building (w/ the exception of water) except the lunchroom. That means no coffee in class...ouch!

A lot of the posts you may have read that are negative are probably form disgruntled students, yes there are some mostly because this school is very strict about honor and academic integrity and takes honor code violations very seriously. I know there have been students in the past who have been caught cheating or plagiarizing or doing illegal things and they were expelled, as they should be. I can't say for certain but I would guess that some of those angry posts came from those students who were kicked out or reprimanded for being dishonest.
