I've been debating whether or not I would like to go to DO school and how many DO schools I should apply to. I just wanted to see from current or past DO students- are you happy with your decision to go to DO school? What are your experiences with your specific school so far?

Thanks guys!

Most of my students are quite happy to be here. They know they're going to be doctors.

There is a subgroup of unknown size at every DO school who are self-hating and angry that they couldn't get into an MD school. You see a few of them post in these fora.

Just starting up in a month at VCOM-Carolinas...
I am over the moon excited and happy I will become a doctor, as Goro said - practicing medicine and making plenty of guap

As my name suggests, I would love to do gen surgery, or another specilaity such neurology or EM, etc.
I am prepared to try hard as hell to make that happen but at the end of the day if I have to go into IM, I will do so and not be upset about it one bit...

My stats are
cGPA: 3.44
sGPA; 3.47
MCAT: 510

with an upward trend in GPA

GPA is around 10-25% percentile for a lot of schools, so not very competitive. Check MSAR if you don't believe me. If your MCAT was excellent, it'd be a different story. Maybe SMP + another MCAT if you really want to go MD, but I think you'd get in a decent DO school...

All answers to this question are very individualized! I am very happy. I was interested in primary care/public health in underserved settings and have great opportunities for that at a DO school. It all depends on your goals and what will set you up to get you there. Take time to figure out what you want and do research on how to get there.

Does the "osteopathic uniqueness", "you guys need to be documenting osteopathic findings in your H&Ps" etc annoy me? Yes.

But at the end of the day I'm a physician and I wouldn't be here if is wasn't for my DO school.

PS from what I've seen most people hate their med school at one point or another, MD and DO, and the hate disappears once you match/graduate. Mostly...

Starting at GA-PCOM in a month. I feel amazing. I'm going to be a doctor.

MD? DO? Who really cares? All I wanted was to be a physician and its finally happening.

I have never been happier in my life.

Starting this Fall, and all I can say is that I'm very happy and excited because I get a second chance at being a Doctor. My next move would have been to the Caribbean.

Hoping for EM. Hoping DO can take me there.

3.82 GPA 507 MCAT

I’m ready to work.
Also hoping for EM here. From everything I've gathered about researching DO schools, EM is one of the most common specialties matched. It often seems that its around the 4th or 5th most common for matches behind IM, FM, and peds

From my experiences, the ones that regret it are the ones gunning for certain specialties. At the end of the day FM is still pulling in 200k. If you are flexible and want to have a good life. It’s still a good deal.

Would recommend 10/10 times

Like what kind of specialties?

What about gas? Ive seen the numbers, just chit chatting.

Long time beneficiary of SDN and first time poster to give back.

I'm entering my last year at an osteopathic medical school and I am very happy; I would say that most of my classmates are happy as well. Whether you're MD or DO there will always be obstacles you will face and things you aren't happy about. Pick the school that you feel will give you the best environment to succeed both as a student and as a person. At the end of the day the initials be damned- it comes down to working hard to be the best doctor for your patients.

Its 3rd for 2018 Match

I DREADED in fear of the idea of me going to LECOM, but then I got accepted MD. In all honesty, anyone can get into a DO school if they put in marginal effort. A lot of people at my interview were so stupid. One girl didn't even study for the MCAT. I failed my interview and they accepted me lol. The schools bring in a level of mediocrity MD schools don't tolerate

Lol what a troll

Clearly whatever school accepted you made a mistake. You make me sick to my stomach

Sometimes the truth isn't pretty. Yes I know N =1, but the evidence is in the numbers. I'm not saying I look down on DOs, it's just I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing I couls have strived for morw

And this ladies and gentlemen, is why I can’t stand medical students. Ughhhhh

What are you trying to get at exactly? Do you honestly believe that the most important qualities a doctor should possess is high board and class scores?
All I'm saying is that the DO schools are not hard to get into. Many people say it is just as competitive as MD, but the numbers don't line. Im not even saying that MD schools make better doctors, just the above. Personally, I think DO schools are great if your changing careers and need a shortcut. But for myself, I couldn't stand being there because I have no excuses for not doing well in my eyes

I hope you have some kind of eye opening or humbling experience that helps you and your insecurities. I truly wish the best for you and your future career.

I don’t
I’m petty and I’m proud!
If it makes you feel better, I wish I was at a higher ranked MD school. Just to recap, there's nothing wrong with going DO and those schools make good doctors. I just think that they serve a purpose, and I wouldn't fit in there. Better?
