Are DOs still required to do a transitional year?

No. There are 5 states where your first year of residency has to meet certain AOA requirements for you to get licensed, but these are easy to work around.

So what about if you want to do pathology, which has no internship year (you go straight into your path residency after graduation from med school). Do they still approve your first year of residency as your required OGME-1 year?

Some D.O. residencies require a traditional (not transitional, that is MD) year. They include pathology, rad onc, diagnostic radiology, PM&R, and Optho.

...I don't think there are any DO pathology residencies.

Since there are no DO pathology residencies, your first year of residency is automatically AOA-approved. And remember, this only applies to those 5 states (FL, MI, WV, OK, and PA I think). If you want to practice outside those 5 states, none of this nonsense applies and you can do whatever you want.

This pdf has all the info you need: http://www.do-online.org/pdf/sir_ogme1core.pdf

It can be found on do-online (or just google resolution 42)
