I love Johnny Walker

Hi, I'm close to becoming a doctor (3rd yr), and although I take my career very seriously, am a good student, etc, I would just like to say that I have no problem partying my a$$ off. As I moved on from high school to college and then to med school, I noticed that the really fun loving people in life get weeded out slowly. Now it seems like me and my friend John in San Fran are like the only people left who party. For example, the other night I went to a club and met 2 girls, and they were so impressed that I'm going to be a doc, and let me tell you I really used that to my advantage. Next thing you know I'm in my pad sipping martinis out of their belly buttons. This weekend I'm going to probably go out with one of them, but I'm on call Sunday so that really sucks. Anyway, I am interested in surgery but I don't mind blowing a hole through the nightlife whenever I get a chance. I see it this way, just like Bill Clinton, you gotta work hard and PLAY HARD, you know? See ya guys later

Dude, you SERIOUSLY impressed two drunk girls in a bar! <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> you have this med school thing figured out....I had no idea you could play 21yo 4eva

Now, if you are a girl I AM impressed :D

What a classic post,

I have no idea who put it here, but that is pretty damn funny. I do have to admit, that being a medical student, or an MD has definately provided more opportunities with women then even being an entrepreneur. My take is...that men who are about to become physicians or who are physicians have a FAR LARGER sense of self, than those who don't. And to some degree, ego driven behavior reeks of confidence, which is what people like to see. As an entrepreneur, I was a lot more self sacrificing then I was as a med student. It's a shame it doesn't work that way for women. Personally, for my money; an attractive female physician to be, is JUST ABOUT THE SEXIEST THING AROUND. It's a shame the world doesn't necessarily see it that way. Dude, all I can say is...WHATEVER YOU CAN DO TO TAKE THE EDGE OFF...DO IT!! In med school, I partied like a rock star, and drank till I needed a liver transplant. I think you may become too old for it...but you will never be so beyond it from a stress level. Some people read a book, or write, or hike...AND SOME PEOPLE PARTY THEIR ACEEE OFF. Still, love the description. Belly button kahlua shots...man those were the days. Shame that none of those girls could put together enough of a cohesive thought to light a twig. Oh well...all the stupid ones are impressed by the superficial. Party on, homes...party on.

Get over yourself! You're not the only one in the world who parties and picks up women. By the way, as a married female med student with lots of single girl-friends, I can say there aren't really all that many high-quality women who are impressed solely by a guy being a doctor - you should have other attractive qualities too...like being humble.

Anyway, here in New Orleans, where we just finished a full 3 weeks straight of partying between Mardi Gras and Super Bowl, alot of the med students, residents, and even attendings showed they were not ashamed to be seen partying right along with the rest of the city. Of course, we must be professional while we are at work, but this is an environment where if you didn't go out and have some sort of fun on your off time during the last few weekends, you were definitely in the minority. I'm sorry for you that your med school is not like this. You should try a 4th year rotation at Tulane or LSU and let the people of Louisiana show you how its done.

Johnny, and your point is? Whoever said that being a doctor and partying are two mutually exclusive things? It's really time to think out of the box.

For those who've never been here, let me elaborate: A typical Mardi Gras weekend day with the locals starts with Bloody-Marys with breakfast. By noon you are starting to sip from your cooler full of beer while watching some parades. By midnight your're just getting rolling into the dance clubs or live music clubs, and sometime between 4 and 6am you might go home. Most bars don't even have a closing time in this city...ever! How's that for partying?

I'd have to agree with tulanestudent, since, well, I'm also a Tulane student ...

The school knows we love to party, so the exams are done right before Mardi Gras (and this year, the Super Bowl) starts. Then everyone gets involved - students, profs, faculty (many of whom are on floats), and the whole rest of the city. Then we even get the weekend before Mardi Gras, and then Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday... I've never seen so much craziness ... and from med students, no less.

I'd have to agree with some of the above posters, get over yourself. Here, and I'm sure a lot of med schools, everyone parties and it isn't a big deal. It's just part of the culture of working hard and then letting off steam, that's all ...

I mean, I'm sure tulanestudent remembers drinking with Drs. Mascorro, Weber, and co. on Friday 12pm (or Wednesdays, depending on the block) and getting toasted before 3pm at Joe's Bar ("We are the Rx for what ale's you").

If you can't find other students to party with, you're not looking hard enough ...

Hey Doc... did you drive home?

Quit coming down on the guy. I say more power to him. I have noticed how many more girls are attracted to me when they find out I'm a doctor. It is frickin great!

And I agree with him that most doctors/ med students who think that they party are in fact pretty weak when it comes to partying. I think that the personality type that is attracted to medicine is one that fears losing control. This fear of losing control kind of prohibits people from really cutting loose.

I'm practically married, so go out there and live it up for me! Its not the same going out and partying when your in a relationship........there's no chance of dragging some dirty back to your pad and getting busy.

Hey Walker you sound like a nerd that just got play for the first time but I aint mad atcha, keep partying. I only have one night a week to really party (fri night) but I make the most out of one night. Grades slip if I go out more than that.

kind of fun to read how we all party. sometimes it gets old reading: "My step1 scores are 299 and may GPA is 4.0, will I be competitive for pathology?". Drink and be merry.

i thought i knew how to party, until i came here. this country (and europe in general) is nuts...i can barely find time for all the fun and the books, but i do!

if any of you really wanna see how it is done, come here for an elective. i promise to be a good tour guide!!

(by the way, 3 of the last SI swimsuit models were czech...and they love Ameircan doctors, or soon to be doctors...)

Good for you--- if you can do everything well and then go out and party really well then-- you are an inspiration to us all. I have trouble getting enough hours of sleep and getting enough reading done. I make time to get to the gym and my mile times are goin up. However, I do not go out much at all. I can't drink (it always ****s up my next day) and I have no pateince for most people in these clubs or bars. Hey if any of these people who do everything well match into orthopedics or neurosurgery-- I will really be impressed. I know for me-- there is no such thing as balance. I have to pick my battles and to me going out is just not that important. I have not found Balance-- I doubt I ever will when I go into surgery. I will make enough time to work out and the rest of it is just useless.
Again I say god bless you if you can do it all well.

i'm going to match in ortho (hopefully!) this year and i have partied like a rock star since my first year of college and straight through med school. in fact, i drank more in the first and second year of med school than i did in some of my undergrad years!! it has been awesome! work hard and party hard!!

This is quite possibly the best post I have ever read on this site. It's nice to know that those of us in the midwest are not the only soaks in medical school. The only problem living here is that instead of drinking martinis out of belly-buttons we drink Pabst Blue Ribbon...just kidding...Rock on

Hi again everyone. I think all of your replies show that all of us need to take it easy once in a while. All those days I spend looking at sick 80 year old men coughing, hacking, and asking for stool softener really wears a guy out. Sometimes I feel like stepping out of the hospital for a cold one, but we all know such pleasures are forbidden in our field. Anyway, I have another interesting weekend up ahead, as I am not on call. Peace to you all and party on!
