I've been accepted transfer to a pretty high-ranked university from a community college; however, I am now concerned with how it will look to admissions committee members. I had no other choice but to go to community college because my family simply could not afford college because of the debt they were in and my siblings who are already in college. I also couldn't get any kind of financial aid because of their income, and they don't ask about debt or anything for financial aid. So, I was forced to go to a CC. Now I'm wondering if I should even bother pursuing an MD, because although I'm getting my degree from my new school, my CC records are still written in stone.

I don't appreciate your insulting comment.

His comment isn't insulting, but it is reflective of the amusing nature of your concern. Transferring from a CC will not negatively affect your prospects for an MD. Many people, myself included, have gone from CC to university and have been accepted to MD programs. In fact, many non-traditional students have gone this route. You'll be just fine.

It is insulting, because it is insensitive to laugh at someone else's concern.

Thank you for your comment, though. I appreciate it. I was simply unsure and was seeking an answer. I wasn't doing anything with bad intention, nor with humor.

So long as your GPA coming out of CC is close to a 4.0 you'll be fine. Plenty of doctors took plenty of CC credits when they were premeds.

You will be insulted much more as you progress through this profession. They can come from other students, professors, attendings, residents, patients, Harvard MBAs telling you how to doctor, insurance companies etc. etc. etc. etc. Grow a thick skin. It will help.

LOL is not an insulting comment. What is with pre-meds especially on SDN getting butthurt over the littlest things? Your post deserve a chuckle bc it's so neurotic it's hard to tell if you're serious. If you would've searched you wouldn't have gotten your feelings hurt. 👍 And to answer your question, I spent two years and did all pre-reqs at a CC after transferring from a 4-yr and nobody cares.

The real question is: "How good does it look?"

Do you really think going from like CC==> [Harvard*] would be bad? What's the alternative? Not going to [Harvard*]?

So you think the adcoms would be like:
"Pshh...Harvard degree doesn't count. He came from a CC. Let's auto-reject him/her."

*Harvard is just used as an extreme example here to illustrate my point but OP did say "pretty highly ranked".

OP, CC credits will not hurt you as long as everything else looks good. I spent three years taking classes at a community college (my mom taught there, so I got to go to school almost free) so I took all of my basics and most of my prereqs, plus a lot more classes I was just interested in, amassed 100+ hours with a 4.0 and took some time to grow up a bit before I went to a university. Of my four interviews, meeting with two people each time, my CC experience came up once, and he was impressed with where I started from and how far I've come. I was accepted to two schools, including that one, where I'll be attending next year.

If anyone should be worried, it should be me. I hit the superfecta: 1) community college coursework; 2) online coursework; 3) CLEP/DSST credit; and 4) unknown state school. I'm glad I'm not worried, though; I don't think I could get anything done, otherwise.

You'll be fine. Good luck! 😛

Heh, good to know I wasn't the only one that spent an extended amount of time at a CC. I was at my CC for four years (working and also changed majors, requiring new prereqs). By the time I transferred to my university I had 136 CC units. lol

Nope! Definitely not! I thought I was the only one. :-D

Does it look bad? No. Does it raise questions? Absolutely. It was discussed at EVERY single interview I had for Medical School.

FWIW, my CC gpa was < my university gpa for the simple fact that my CC did not adjust grades for difficulty of content (if everyone fails, then everyone fails), while my university adjusted grades not only for difficulty of a given test for particular cohort of students, but with an extra adjustment for "honors/advanced" courses. I had something like 3.7 for community college (2 years) and 3.95 for university (3 years).

It matters, but not necessarily in a negative way

It must be a YMMV situation. No one ever asked me about it when I was interviewing.
