Does OBGYN attract girl gunners?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lmfao. I have seen the ortho gang at my school. bouncin 185 off their chest. can barely scared cat deadlift 315 anf half reppin a couple plates on squats. Yeah there are a couple serious guys who are tanks. But it's a lot of wannebe jocks who are not genetically gifted washed up high school and D3 athletes...really nerds at heart. Nothing special.

That’s probably a true assessment, but that’s more than what you can say about other specialties.

I wouldn't say they are gunners. I think the field is filled with intense personalities. Also it's one of those fields where people go into medical school having a strong passion about. From working st planned parenthood or other womens shelters while most of us have no idea what we wanna do.
OBGYN residents are the most intense people I have ever met in my life...

The two girls I know aiming for derm are actually pretty chill. They’re just quietly high achievers. They don’t discuss their grades. They don’t feel the need ask or answer questions in obnoxious ways to show off their smartness.

The two girls in my class I know want derm are super chill and very good people. One of them is a class tutor with me and goes out of her way to make great resources for the entire class.

I haven't bothered reading the thread because you aren't describing gunners in your original post. You getting irritated at people working harder than you doesn't make them a gunner, it makes you insecure. They aren't sabotaging anyone, they aren't cheating, they aren't putting anyone down. They just know their goals and want to get started early.

Agree agree agree agree. We need to sticky the actual definition of a gunner in the med student forums, lol.

Those dudes aren’t the top tier then. Lots of the ortho dudes in my class are 6’ or taller, jacked, and were D1 athletes. But maybe the D1 ortho bros get into different med schools than the D3 guys lol

Obviously most orthos are not on D1 level, or they’d probably be playing pro sports instead of fixing bones. You can still be tall and jacked and be a D3 or a high school level athlete. But ortho has disproportionate amount of athletes. Resident intramurals are pretty much dominated by ortho residents everywhere.

A huge majority of D1 athletes are not even close to pro-level. The ones who had the interest and wherewithal to do the whole premed song and dance are even less likely to be the pro-level guys, who essentially start high school planning to go pro. Not to mention a bunch of D1 sports are not even really played professionally, and some of the ones that are do not draw substantially from the college ranks. Our society is anchored on the way football and basketball work, but most former college athletes you see in medicine (and in life in general) played a different sport.

I would bet, although this is more of an educated guess, that most former college athletes in America were D1, just because of the numbers and the enormity of many D1 schools. Most people do not go to D3 schools.

Right. D1 is more than SEC football. There are a lot of mediocre to bad schools that are “D1” or D1a”. Also some guys may not look like athletes (most former linemen, or the scrawny lacrosse players) but that doesn’t mean they weren’t athletes. I always find it funny when SDN strongly contests a generalization that we all know has some truth to it from real life
