Does OBGYN attract girl gunners?

Finishing up my first year of medical school, and I’m currently leaning towards OBGYN however I can’t help but look at the other people in my class who have declared their interest in the field (and are actively working towards securing connections) and I keep wondering if my personality isn’t suited to another field?

I know the question will offend some...but I’m curious if anyone else has observed/felt the same about the girls going into OBGYN in their classes...

I wouldn't say they are gunners. I think the field is filled with intense personalities. Also it's one of those fields where people go into medical school having a strong passion about. From working st planned parenthood or other womens shelters while most of us have no idea what we wanna do.

feel like these stereotypes are ending pretty fast...majority of gen surg applicants and 25-40% of ortho applicants from my school have been women over the past couple years

The two girls I know aiming for derm are actually pretty chill. They’re just quietly high achievers. They don’t discuss their grades. They don’t feel the need ask or answer questions in obnoxious ways to show off their smartness.

This stereotype is definetly true. The guys going into ortho in my class are probably the most generally disliked members of my class.

I don't know...according to the latest NEJM paper on stereotypes in medicine, ortho had the greatest bicep to arm ratio of all specialties combined, on average.

look at most ortho programs. google it. many look like nerds. this minority for former athletes makes it seem like, to some of the ill-informed, the roster is a bunch of former NFL players and Mr. Olympia contenders. Reality is that these dudebros are a minority. Actually, many of the chillaxed ones are doing PM&R at this point. Also there is a huge change from the beginning to the end of med school in the proportion of dudebros who want ortho. Many quit after they rotate and realize it isn't all just bi***s and bone saws

believe me, I’ve already done so, and while many look like nerds, many are clear athletes. I’m not sure why me pointing this out is controversial and “inflammatory”.

at my school the OB residents take pictures of all the students on rotation and actively look for chances to write about students in a burn book, and then at the end of the rotation they get together for a meeting with snacks to consolidate the burn book comments into an eval (roast students) D:

The ortho stereotype is definitely true, obviously not 100% but I can always differentiate the ortho team at my hospital from, say, the ID team by how Abercrombie they all look.

I will say it seems like just about every hot dudebro at my school goes into either some form of surgery or EM. Almost every single one.

My med school experiences with OB/GYN residents have generally been awful. I tend to bump into the catty, gossipy, clique-y, perpetually in high school mode types. If you aren't that type of person and are generally nice, you become the dumping ground for all the vitriol and are ostracized from all the other residents. Awful, awful behavior.

Fortunately, the OB/GYN residents at my current institution seem to be a lot more well-mannered, although I still see glimpses of that kind of negative behavior.

The attendings are a different story. I got along with attendings both in med school and currently in residency.

People will always gravitate to fields with cultures that they identify/get along with. everyone wants to fit in to some degree

the guys I know active in strongman and powerlifting in med school aren't ortho guys. I see a lot of bigger boned high school football player types that gravitate towards ortho and look big as a virtue of their frame. But I don't know too many truly strong ones in terms of Wilks

I have no idea what DYEL is, but as an actual attending orthopaedic surgeon I can tell you that more than half of any ortho surgeons I’ve interacted with had zero interest in sports/athletics.

In my residency about 50 percent of residents were former college athletes, with one guy getting drafted in the MLB. The other 50 percent were also pretty serious about fitness. All and all, a lot of bros broing out, it was great.

Meh... people can declare whatever specialty they want in first year, a lot of people will change their minds. I had classmates that were hardcore OB/GYN in 1st year, then ended up going to neurosurgery... or hardcore surgery who went into psych, etc.

There are stereotypes for every specialty, but that doesn't mean everyone will fit that stereotype. I was also initially put off by OBGYN for fear I wouldn't fit in because I'm a more introverted female. But I met plenty of OBGYN residents/attendings who didn't fit the typical stereotype. I decided to go into this field because I loved the patient population and the mixture of medicine with surgery/procedures.

Do what you want to do. Focus on what patient population you'd like to work with and pick something you can imagine doing for the rest of your life.

I don't really think I am a Gunner, but I have good scores and like research. I have always planned on on/gyn, and have been able to find good mentors. My bff is at our state school and says this year every woman who was undecided after Step went ob/gyn and every guy went anesthesia. It all goes in cycles.

Lmfao. I have seen the ortho gang at my school. bouncin 185 off their chest. can barely scared cat deadlift 315 anf half reppin a couple plates on squats. Yeah there are a couple serious guys who are tanks. But it's a lot of wannebe jocks who are not genetically gifted washed up high school and D3 athletes...really nerds at heart. Nothing special.
