I have a question for
LizzyM. Others can respond but I don't want to extend this pointless thread needlessly.
I noticed something of a double standard in that awful race thread a few days back and noticed it again here.
You and others seem to echo the sentiment that if a white and/or heterosexual patient refused to be treated by a someone of a minority race or sexual orientation, this person should be labeled a racist or homophobe, and I say,
rightfully so.
What I don't understand is how you find it perfectly acceptable for minority patients to prefer minority doctors, and do not level the same criticism. I am in support of any person, racist or not, choosing a doctor with whom he or she feels most comfortable. However, the minority patient's reasons for preferring a doctor of a specific race or sexual orientation are essentially the same. A white patient's past experiences with minorities may well have served to reinforce perceived stereotypes, leading to his preference of a white doctor. Even though this patient may know no better, we would still label him as an ignorant racist or homophobe. Likewise, the minority patient may have had past life experiences in which he was discriminated against, but it is equally ignorant for this patient to make sweeping generalizations that all white or heterosexual doctors will treat him with the same discrimination.
Again, I believe that any person should be able to receive treatment from any doctor they choose, regardless of their reason. It is not our place to judge and hopefully this increased level of patient comfort with a doctor of their choosing will lead to more effective treatment.
But, I believe it is equally ignorant for any patient to refuse treatment from a doctor of a different race or sexual orientation, since most all doctors would provide the highest level of care for their patient, regardless of who it is.
