dont ask dont tell for doctors?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does that cancel out?

Unless they are also a Kenyan Commie-Nazi-Marxist 😛

A few months ago a married man was coming on to you and asking about your sexual experience and now you are looking for christian only schools and thinking that "don't ask, don't tell" might be a good idea for gay students "because good christians don't want gay doctors".

For the love of all that is holy, come out of the closet and be your authentic self.

BAM! She shoots she scores.

OP You just just got served!

You bashed the entire gay community. Looks like you won't be sleeping for awhile...

UNBELIEVABLE. i never attacked any gay or anyone else. i can't communicate with people that distort my words. 'nuff said.

Shun the non-believers! Shun! Shuuuunnnnnn!

Now might be a good time to put a banana in your ear. But then again, that would mean missing out on all the fun here...

no one should care about my opinion on a dont ask dont tell policy. my personal opinion is that it shouldnt matter someones orientation but that opinion shouldnt matter. what i care about is what other sdn'ers think. you and so many other sdn'ers have attacked me personally. i dont expect an apology but i couldnt sleep at night knowing that i was so rude to someone.

Bro you started off by saying that "good christians" don't want to go to gay doctors and then implied that not all gay doctors are qualified because they're gay (saying "some may be qualified but...")

That's why youre getting insulted.

why should it matter if im unapologetic about being christian or i was home schooled if it was for only two years? apparently there are lots of non-believers out there since i got two nasty personal messages. im not sure if they are gay or muslim.

Had me going for a bit. Thou art troll.

ETA on ban? Three troll topics in rapid succession.

I told you to be your authentic self and you found that rude??

Or was suggesting that you were in a closet (hiding your real self) the rude thing I did?

If you are trying to hide who you are, or are afraid that you would be shunned if people knew the real you, you've got problems that we can't fix on a message board. Every one of us should strive to be authentic.

You can acknowledge your feelings without acting on them. PM me if you want to talk about dealing with some of these issues that are bubbling up. I don't want to insult you but I want you to keep it real. Being authentic means being honest with yourself and with others. (although you need not blab all over the place and you can keep your private life private, too).

Not only is my gay FP a damn good doctor, but check out this pick of him dominating the court against all straight opponents:

I have a question for LizzyM. Others can respond but I don't want to extend this pointless thread needlessly.

I noticed something of a double standard in that awful race thread a few days back and noticed it again here.

You and others seem to echo the sentiment that if a white and/or heterosexual patient refused to be treated by a someone of a minority race or sexual orientation, this person should be labeled a racist or homophobe, and I say, rightfully so.

What I don't understand is how you find it perfectly acceptable for minority patients to prefer minority doctors, and do not level the same criticism. I am in support of any person, racist or not, choosing a doctor with whom he or she feels most comfortable. However, the minority patient's reasons for preferring a doctor of a specific race or sexual orientation are essentially the same. A white patient's past experiences with minorities may well have served to reinforce perceived stereotypes, leading to his preference of a white doctor. Even though this patient may know no better, we would still label him as an ignorant racist or homophobe. Likewise, the minority patient may have had past life experiences in which he was discriminated against, but it is equally ignorant for this patient to make sweeping generalizations that all white or heterosexual doctors will treat him with the same discrimination.

Again, I believe that any person should be able to receive treatment from any doctor they choose, regardless of their reason. It is not our place to judge and hopefully this increased level of patient comfort with a doctor of their choosing will lead to more effective treatment.

But, I believe it is equally ignorant for any patient to refuse treatment from a doctor of a different race or sexual orientation, since most all doctors would provide the highest level of care for their patient, regardless of who it is.

Should've been in a PM or in a new thread, man. Almost completely irrelev--

............

Ah, f*ck. It's a troll thread anyway, and probably a troll. Lolcat away.

Stupid. I just care that I get an objective eye, I'm not looking to judge the physician for their beliefs/customs/ethnicity/hair color or anything else.

Should've been in a PM or in a new thread, man.

I don't think it deserves to be a new thread, and I think LizzyM could give me an adequate answer in one post. Like I said before, I don't want this thread to continue any more than you do.

You have free choice in choosing who you want to be a doctor. If you decide based on your doctors skin or sexuality that they aren't adequate then you're a bigot. The same applies to an group really. If I black guy goes around saying all white doctors are inept then he is also a bigot. However you're free to have a preference for a certain physician. But their skin or sexuality or religion should be minor factors in the list. Basically it goes both ways.

Uhh, Not true.

Uhh, Not true.

So to expand on this statement a little further, you're saying that a significant percentage of doctors knowingly and deliberately provide a lower standard of care for patients of different races and sexual orientation?

so one time my doc was about to tell me his sexual orientation, and i was like wait wait, noooo dont tell me!!! Then he asked what my sexual preference was and i was like wait wait, dont ask me!!!

Everyone needs a doctor with whom they can feel comfortable. Most communities have several to choose from (or even dozens!) and someone can ask friends or do a internet search to find someone who speaks their language (literally and metaphorically), or who seems to be a good fit.

For some people, finding someone who respects their religious customs and practices, their ethnic customs, or other lifestyle choices, is very important. It is hoped that every physician will be respectful and understanding. However, we also know that sometimes there is a good fit and other times, something just doesn't click. So, a large variety of physicians increases the probabilty that you'll find someone with whom you can click. There is also the hope that a diverse student body in medical school will provide education to one another with regard to culture and customs.

i wanted to ask LizzyM a question but wont because she insults me. why is she so respectful when answering other questions?

i am quoting lizzm word for word: "come out of the closet and be your authentic self."

that is probably the rudest comment i have read on this message board. people are afraid to condemn this comment because LizzyM is powerful but i believe this comment is extremely offensive if i was or was not gay. i would never say anything bad about lizzym but this is shocking that she could be so insensitive.

No OP I support you. I think you raise some excellent points! Definitely things that you'd want to discuss passionately in your AMCAS application. Explore these issues in your personal statement. I find your question a bit narrow though. It could perhaps be broadened to whether or not homosexuals have the right to be physicians for straight people at all! Perhaps they should be quarantined in their own community with their own hospitals and their own social services to make sure they do not turn the rest of us homosexual with their fashionable clothing and their delicious cafes.

It's hard to have an honest discussion with a troll so I'm probably going to regret this question, but:

How is that comment disrespectful?

So, apparently being gay and Christian are mutually exclusive. THAT is one of the most offensive things I have read in a long time.

Where do you get off making a statement like that? Who are you decide that because someone is gay, they're not a good Christian?

A person should see a doctor that they feel comfortable with. I have no beef with that, for whatever reason.

However, you making moral judgements is offensive. You're a bigot and a troll. 👎

Agreed. If there can be Jewish nazis, why not gay Christians?

LizzyM doesn't sleep, she waits.

If LizzyM was the star of 24 the show would be called 1

LizzyM was dropped twice as a baby. First on Hiroshima, then on Nagasaki

LizzyM actually died 5 years ago, but death was too scared to ever mention it to her.

lulz 👍

Good christians? You are a a hypocritical bigot. Didn't Jesus say to love everyone? Who the hell are you to make judgements about other people? I would be more than happy if you were to die today, you and everyone like you. You are evil, you are what is wrong with this country and world. I would gladly have a gay doctor. However I wouldn't want a doctor like you who is a judgmental, disgusting piece of..... 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

No dude this was probably the rudest thing someone has said to you and damnit I can't help but agree with the duck.

I'm wondering if the BCEagles is some sort of performance piece... because if so, he goes all out... even sending me a PM...

see this is where i'm confused--trolls want attention in a public setting, so why would he be PM'ing people unless he is just a very confused premed? In which case I feel bad for him, but I don;t think he realizes he's pissing people off.

on the contrary... I'm far from pissed off. I'm more intrigued than anything.

I don't have the articles, but there are studies that have shown that non-minority (white) doctors have biases against minorities when it comes to treatment. I think the variables looked at revolved around believability of what the patient says/how seriously the patient was taken/the chances of the doctor implementing a treatment plan. They compared patients who were of different ethnic backgrounds, and presented with the same signs and symptoms (pathology), and the doctors follow up treatment. There were biases against minorities. I think the greatest difference in treatment was between white male and black male patients. So, since some doctors have (sub-conscious?) biases against minorities, it's in the minority's best interest to choose a doctor that is like them so that they can receive the best care. Perhaps if minority doctors were shown to have biases against non-minority patients, then maybe those non-minorities wouldn't be looked at as bigots when choosing a non-minority doctor?
