what would be a good dress watch to buy or have when having the interview?

do yourself a favor and get a "Tag."

Are you kidding? I wouldn't worry about wearing a watch. If anything it might do you harm- glancing at your watch in an interview is a no no. Good luck.

yeah seriously who cares? that really sucks if having a cool watch could really help you get into medical school. i doubt the guy/lady sitting across from you will give a **** as to what you have on your wrist as long as it doesnt involve spikes or other bondage paraphenalia. 😱

ditto. i'd recommend spending more time reading up on current medical issues and less time worrying about your appearance.

I have my trusty Timex that I always wear. Wore it to the interview place to make sure I wasn't late. Once I was there I took it off and put it in my purse. So, no fear of glancing at it during an interview, but I still have one on me in case I need to check the time.

what you need to do is get one of them spongebob watches and proudly show it off during the interview. then, as the interview is ending, randomly jump up as in a whiny voice squeel, "WHAT TIME IS IT???!?!"
haha, i love that commercial

well, sorry it didn't go well with the crowd. guess you guys really don't care about your appearance to the point of wearing a watch or caring if you wear one.

except for the breitling, but seems a bit too over the top for me in a dress casual sense of a watch. those things got tachometers and such all over the place!

Well, I don't think it really matters - but just a word of advice....get one with a second hand.....and preferably one that has numbers......i have a watch that has neither, and I realized that I should have gotten a more practical one because my sister who's in medical school is required to have a watch with a secondhand when she was in the clinic.

wow, you guys are harsh. i thought that was a legitimate question. just because someone is worried about accessories does not mean that person is too worried about appearance and not enough about the actual interview. you people should check out the interview clothing thread for women.

actually, i was on an interview and noticed this guy with a completely tacky watch. if i were doing his interview, i certainly would have noticed how unprofessional it was. something like that should have no bearing on your interview, but i think subconsciously it does.

as for what kind of watch to get, i have no advice. i'm a chick and i got mine at the sunglass hut because i used to work there like 3 1/2 years ago. whatever you get just make sure it is nice and doesn't have any flashy colors in it.

A big fat black plastic watch from a vending machine is going to ruin the whole professional look. The interviewer may not take a conscious thought about it but i'm sure it may sometimes come up subconciously. If you're not big into watches, then just get a reasonable looking 50 dollar dress watch from Macy's. If you like watches, then its a great excuse to get that Tag.

I took time to make sure every detail was taken care of during my interviews (including choice of watch and other accessories) and have gotten into every school I've interviewed at. Attention to the small things shows that you care, and that does matter.

One of my primary EC's is watch making... so the type of watch I wear is really important because I have been asked at every interview. One guy even asked me to tell him about his watch. I agree with the OP. While I may be an extreme example, the devil is in the details. A nice watch is an important part of an interview ensamble. Probably your watch isn't going to get you into medical school or not (except maybe in my case) but it will contribute to your presence. Just like you wouldn't wear Nike's to the interview, you probably don't want to wear a Timex either.

To try to answer the question; the key is in subtlety. You want to have a sophisticated but not flashy piece. That means no plastic and no cloth in the band. If you have a soft band, make it some dead animal's skin. Big gold watches are too much... but a small gold watch without too many angles or jewels is ok. You want to stay away from jewels altogether really. You want to say "I'm sophisticated but not compensating for anything with my bling." Seiko makes nice watches in the $100-$700 price range. Dakota makes nice watches in the $50-$400 price range. Patek Philippe (God's gift to horologists) makes nice watches in the $25,000-$8,000,000 price range. Get whatever fits your price range. I really like the Seiko Kinetic watches. I had an Auto Relay for a while that I really liked. They look nice but not too obscene. You can get them new off of EBay for about 1/2 the price.

You sound like you know about watches. I can't figure out why Seiko would design a watch where the actual watch is so small you can't easily tell what time it is. I am referring to their Arctura:
seiko_arctura.jpg

What do you think?

Yeah... watchmakers love to make watches that do as many things as possible outside of just telling time. They're called "complications" and sometimes it's silly. I don't too much care for that sort of design either where the actual time-telling part of the dial is a sub-feature. It's been going in and out of style since they had the technology to do it.

dopaminophile, what good watch can i get for $300-500 that looks modern, hip yet simple and elegant?

One of the seiko kinetic varieties would fall in that price range. There's kindof a broad range of styles and none are too gawdy. They're neat watches too, there's a rotor that charges a capacitor in them so they never need a battery. As you move your arm the rotor swings and charges the watch. They used to use 'em to wind springs back in the good ol days.

For watches, that's on the low end. If other people want to spend some money to get a watch to make them happy, who are we to disapprove?

Trust me. One day I plan on having a huge pocketwatch and hat collection(since I like both).

But I don't see how an undergrad can afford such things.

I struggle for grocery money.

Rich parents, trust funds, bought a ton of ebay stock in 1998?

But then he's not really spending twenty grand on a 24K rolex or anything.

i looked at the seikos but they just seem to be all right with me. maybe the seiko arctura would be nice.

the tag heuer link auto chronometer looks pretty nice.

but about the breitling, how much would a good one cost me, like the windrider wings automatic? it really looks nice.... 👍

The arctura sucks as I pointed out because its hard to tell what time it is. Automatic Tags tend to cost about a grand new, but online can be had for ~700, cheaper if you just get the battery powered professionals. I think Breitlings are quite a bit more than 500.

In that same price range as the Seiko I also recommend Movado watches. I have one that I wear on special occasions including professional functions.

yea, thats why i gotta start saving the money now 🙂.. but they are soooo nice!!!

Breitlings are nice but they aint in that price range. They tend to run a few grand. It's all a matter of taste. I like watches without a lot of visual complexity when there's not much information. Breitlings look like they're expensive watches, appropriately. I like nice watches that don't scream at you. That's also why I like the Patek Philippe watches. Oooh baby I get shivers just thinkin about em.

I like movados, especially the pic that you posted... very minimalist in their design. Trouble is that I can't ever tell what time it is when there're no markings! I wear a Dakota somethingoranother casually and a '65 Rolex Oyster Perpetual when I want to look good (to interviews). The latter is very subtle but gorgeous.

wow.. a '65 rolex oyster perpetual?? 😱 how much you get that for! it looks like you know where to get the hookups. can you tell me anywhere besides ebay where i can get good prices, say for a breitling? 🙄

If you're serious... you have to find the old watchmakers near where you are. Usually there's still a shop or two open in smaller cities and plenty open in bigger cities. You get in good with them and you can find anything. They're a classic guild though and it can be tough to get in. Some of the old farts are real dinguses. Others will really take you in because their's is a dying art. If you get to know them well... they can find anything. People are bartering their watches to eachother and they know the real quality and the real finds. The key, though, is that you have to wait. You let people know what you're interested in and after a while it will just appear. Sometimes it can take a long while. I've been twiddling my thumbs waiting for the right BW Raymond wristwatch to come along. The good deals are out there though... you just have to be patient.

Don't discount EBay either... it's harder now but you can get real steals off of there, specially on newer watches. The old farts society is generally a collector's area.

Incidentally... I didn't pay a dime for my Oyster Perpetual.

About the Breitling: if you have small wrists, best not to get the full-size Men's. The case diameter is usually 44 mm to 48 mm wide and 15 mm thick, and for smaller wrists, it would look disproportionate. A Navitimer Heritage, for example, will run about $5,000 new and between $1,500 and $3,500 used (read: eBay and AUTHENTIC, non-counterfeit). Swiss Army, on the other hand, makes really cool, more affordable watches. Usually you can get a decent timepiece from them for about $200.

my personal favorites 🙂

Well, As a man, it depends on how big your hands/writs are. If you have big hands than you can get away with some of those big round dial watches. But for small or normal hands like mine, i would go with a rectangular watch. For an interview probably best to get one with a black leather strap. But personally, I wear a rectangular one with stainless steel band.

Best of luck.

would a leather strap work better than a metal one? which is actually more appropriate for this type of setting?

I really like the Reimond Weils posted above. Very nice!

I recently purchased a used Tag Heuer 2000 Professional Series off ebay for a price in the 300s. Not bad at all, as it doesn't look at all used and lists for around 1k new. Part of it was a birthday present; the rest was just a few months savings. 🙂

Freaker, yeah I just love Raymond Weil watches. They just look awesome and you can't go wrong with em! I like the tag you posted, really slick. Is that matte?

Please don't go leather strap bbaek! go metal

You have to be so careful with metal bands. If the watch is gold, NEVER wear a metal band... always go leather. If the watch is some other white metal, then you can have a metal band if you refuse anything else... but beware of it being too gawdy. Remember it's an accent not a crown jewel!

The second greatest watch ever made. Patek Philippe Star Caliber 2000.

patek2.jpg

The greatest watch ever constructed is the Caliber 89. It took 9 years to build.

And your Timex is more accurate than all three!

to the OP:

just get something serious, but don't spend so much. i would suggest something like the Swatch Irony collection, with a leather strap. leather straps are considered more formal than bracelet (especially in exotic skins). hold off on the Patek, Breitling, Cartier, or Tag for now... i say wait until you get INTO med school before you buy something like that to celebrate the occasion. and someone else mentioned this fact already, and it's true: for the clinic/hospital work (whether it's rotations or 1st & 2nd year exposure), you will need a watch with a second hand, because you need to be able to take heart rate and respiratory rate.

I wore my plastic running watch to my interview and I got in. Actually it just sort of generally amused me. I don't think it really makes too much of a difference if you wear a watch or not. Buy one if you want one but don't get one just for your interview thats silly.

Personally, I plan on wearing my dress Winnie-the-Pooh watch. It's actually very nice, and has cute little bumble-bees running around for the second hand. 😀

Just because you're wearing a suit, doesn't mean you can't have something fun around. Just make sure it's not too flashy. You ARE allowed a personality, y'know.

On the lower end of the budget, I like Kenneth Cole watches.

The one below used to be a 250.00 watch, but I just bought a new one on Ebay for 56.00 for my husband after he lost his old one.

He has everything from a $19 Japanese watch to a 03 Rolex Stainless.
