This may be a stupid question, but what's the difference between Drew and Geffen? Are they two distinct schools that both happen to be associated with UCLA? What distinguishes the two schools? Thanks in advance!

In a nutshell ... yes. Geffen is the medical school that is on the UCLA campus (in the UCLA med center actually, but CHS in still technically part of campus). Drew students do their pre-clinical years with Geffen students at The David Geffen School of medicine, but then do clinical at what used to be the Harbor MLK hospital (I think). However, that hospital is supposed to be closing down so I'm kinda uncertain about the future of Drew.

I hear that Drew is more geared towards underserved populations. If you do a search in this forum, I'm sure you'll find some info.

MLK and Harbor-UCLA are distinct hopsitals. Both are geared toward the underserved, though. Drew students still do some rotations at MLK, but most are now done at other UCLA-affiliated hospitals, including Harbor. Other sites include Cedars-Sinai, Olive View, Kaiser Sunset, UCLA proper (CHS), the VA, and Santa Monica hospital.

Ah! Thanks!

Major der on my part. I don't know why I didn't do a quick search of the forum first. That totally cleared it up. 🙂

Whoops ... my bad. So is it Harbor that is being closed down then ... or MLK??

It's MLK-Harbor is unassociated with MLK altogether. In fact, Drew itself has fully separated from MLK. Their rotations are done at Harbor in torrance, olive view, and a few others. Both are geared towards the underserved, but Drew much more so. Also, the drew program is small--like 20-30 students a year. All of them get to know each other, so it's pretty cool.

Edit: There might be some confusion, since after Drew left MLK, they UCLA took over to try and maintain accreditation for MLK, so they named it MLK-harbor. When I mention Harbor, I mean harbor in torrance.

It is not Harbor MLK. Your so knowledgeable about it that you should get accepted right now. 👎

UCLA failed MLK. The main reason is that the school hired dumb attendings to run the place. UCLA failed. UCLA sucks! period. USC all the way! I predict USC over UCLA 42 to 17 this year (for football)! UCLAstudent, tell that to your adcoms and admins, if u want.
