Yeah I was wondering if there'd be prospective students that lost interest due to the lacrosse team scandal. Not that I'm happy about what's going on there, I can't see how it would affect my decision to go there in the least.

Sucks that we don't get to do much with financial aid at this point - how bad is it looking for the students that got in?

Do you guys think we'll hear something May 15 or 16 or much later?

Sorry, hope I'm not giving everyone a heart attack by bumping this, but I had to do it anyway 🙂 People started hearing last year on May 16th...

Good luck everyone! I have a feeling that some of us on this thread are going to have a very exciting week.

Good luck all! Hope to see you in Durham come July.

For those of you who got in: did they say anything about financial aid? I just got word from another school that they are offering me a 10k/year scholarship - it's a good school, though I had originally intended on holding out for Duke or Penn. Seems like it would be a tough call to make if I didn't know how much 4 years at Duke (or wherever) would cost.

for M1, it costs 41k tuition and 61k total which is kind of understandable considering it's 12 months of school instead of 9 for most programs. 2nd year gets more expensive up to 64k (13 months), i believe 3rd year goes back down to 61k (12 months) + there's an opportunity for getting funding for research and 4th year is 60k (8 months)?

i don't have my worksheet on me tho, so i can't tell you for sure.

I don't think I was quite clear on what I was asking - When will the university compile your financial aid award (if you just got off the waitlist)? I know Duke has a lot of cash available, and much of it is need based. What are the odds of getting any of that if you're coming off the waitlist, and when might you know what you're getting, if anything?

I had my parents send all their tax returns back in April so the lady in admissions told me to call fin aid tomorrow to make sure they have everything. I'm planning on asking them how long they think it will take to hear about aid.

Does anyone know how this off the waitlist thing works? I was too excited to ask when I got the call... we have like 2 weeks to decide if we accept the acceptance? Will the other school that I'm holding an acceptance at know that I'm off the waitlist and withdraw me?

I'm pretty sure that you still get good aid if you come off the waitlist. In one of the old threads (maybe last year?) someone said that they got off the waitlist in June or July and ended up with more aid than they got from the school they were holding an acceptance at. The whole "formula" that they presented during interviews still applies to waitlistees, as far as I am aware.

I got a call at 1:45pm today (Tuesday) from a 919 area code.

Thanks, that is somewhat helpful. I also sent in my fin. aid stuff back in April, so hopefully the turn around time on an aid package is quick...then again, I got into 3 schools originally, and only my state school gave me any decent aid. Guess I'm just hoping Duke's deep pockets have something in them for me.

That's pretty much what I imagined - doesn't seem like they'd mistreat the waitlisted students who were later accepted. Thanks

'grats, newcomers!!!! Move over to the "Class Of" thread and let's get this party started!

In the meantime, those of you still waiting - someone at 2nd look told us a story of a guy who was driving north to his new place at a different school at the end of July but was still holding out the faintest hope for Duke. He got the phone call while he was driving and turned his car around, getting to Durham just in time to walk into the first class and say "hey, does anyone need a roommate? Cuz if not, I'm going to be sleeping in my car tonight".

Don't lose hope!

Got the big call. I think a tear formed in the right corner of my eye. Not sure. It tasted kinda salty.

So who calls? Dr. Armstrong?

Mr. Wallace told me that we have until June 1st. 🙂

I think AAMC policy is that the school that accepts students off the waitlist IMMEDIATELY notify (by phone) the school which the student already is accepted to. I imagine that the same rules apply in terms of how long you can hold multiple acceptances (if you have until June 1st, make sure you withdraw from one by June 1st).

Cool, thanks.

Also, word to the wise. . . Duke DOES reconsider financial aid packages. I just got my SOM grant more than doubled (from 3.7% to ~10%, but still) because of a letter my parents wrote and a scholarship at a different school. Just thought I'd share!

does Duke call everyone that they want to take off the waitlist on the very first day (aka yesterday)? or should we also be expecting calls today?

Last year the calls were spread out over more than one day, but I don't think anyone really knows what they are doing this year. It also seems that, although there is a bunch that get off right after May 15th, there are random people getting in until the end of June/July. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

If anyone is still wondering about fin aid, I called the office this morning and they told me I should get my package in about 2 weeks.

Nothing new today?

Lame.

So how often do they make calls? Daily?

Good question. I want to know too. Looks like it's not today though, it's already 4pm Eastern Time.

The week with the most movement is almost over, and I'm still waiting. My Duke acceptance celebrations are put on hold.... 🙁

I wouldn't count yourselves out yet. Chances are, there are some people who were initially planning on going to Duke who got off waitlists at other schools this week, but don't have to withdraw from Duke for ~2 weeks. There will probably be more movement. I sent in 3 update/LOIs, so if you haven't sent any in yet, I would recommend it.
