Are med students calling all accepted students tomorrow or Wednesday or will that be in batches as well? Do you call overseas students too?

Also, when will the email for the second batch of accepted students be sent?

This wait is becoming very painful. Arghhh!!!!!

OK...
to those of us who have not received any letter or emails, we are probably not in the 'first' batch
so the critical question is: WHEN will the second batch be send out? (and what's the distribution of acceptances sent to the first and second batch)

At least no one got rejections post-interview yet. No news is good news?
I'm just worried that second look is in a few weeks and I have to book flights from far away IF I get in (optimistic thinking!).

rejections are sent only after acceptances are sent out i think so until the second batch is out we'll be in the dark

So will these phone calls be made to students who have already received notification of acceptance? Or will they include the "second batch" ?

Y'all are freakin' hilarious. I'm seriously reading the thread and laughing. I know it's not funny... I know... I'm sorry. Um... I really wish I could be of more help. I got an email concerning calling people tomorrow and the next day (unfortunately I won't be able to attend due to conflicts), but I'm not sure who they are calling/how many they are calling/etc.

In conclusion, I am really no help to any of you at this point because as I'm sure you have gathered by now, I am merely a lowly MS1 who is given no important information. I have tried my best to keep you all well-informed even though I am ill-informed. As a result, you are all frantic, and I am sitting here at 2:30 AM on SDN laughing. What a cruel world.

OK I'm not making sense. K thx bye!

Dear God/Buddha/Whoever/Whatever, make me "second batch" worthy!! :luck:

please call me, I don't care about the time zone difference!

Wouldn't it be nice if one of the lovely med students in this thread were to feel a bit thirsty this morning, go in to the admissions office for some free beverages, casually ask around about when the second batch of acceptances/waitlists/rejections are sent out, then after taking the last sip of their refreshment, get on their laptops and spread the wealth of information here before class starts up again?

Please?

I can't stop re-living my interviews over again in my head. There are two specific oopses I made that I'm beginning to think are significant oopses. Both of which may or may not reflect poorly on my desire to go to Duke (not at all the case, but who knows how those interviewers take things).

Do you know when most people in your class who got in off teh waitlist got in? Is it usually around may15th or does it drag into late June/July?

This is really the only question I can somewhat contribute to, which is why I'll answer it from the MS2 class perspective. Almost all of the waitlistees in my class got off May 15. One got off a few days earlier, and there was one that got in mid-June. Every class is different and I've heard of people getting in the day before orientation because someone dropped out or was accepted somewhere else, but May 15 seems to usually be the major waitlist day.

Also, I'm sorry I mentioned the calling thing! I didn't mean to freak you all out. I just know that we're going to be calling some people, most likely not all, so if you don't get a phone call don't worry!

so the million $ question for the MS1s (if they know) is if we dont have a second look email by now, we are either 1)in the 2nd batch 2)waitlisted or 3)rejected ...i.e. dont expect a acceptance in the mail right now?

we'll have a better idea once they start calling...if someone who didn't get the email gets a call..that's good news for us

I was lucky enough to get in around May 15th... I believe it was May 11th around 12 ish CST (but who's keeping track right???). Anyhoo... I think most in my class got in around May 15th, and I know of one who got in really late (late June/early July). You can see the drama unfold if you just go to last year's thread. But ya, luckily for my classmates, I don't think there was anyone who got notified like the day before classes or anything.

Yes. If you did not get an email, then you are either 1) accepted 2) WLed or 3) rejected. 😕 I'm not sure if that reconciles anything...

If I have been offered incentives to go somewhere else, but was waiting to hear from Duke before accepting them, should I call Duke admissions to ask what my status is?

considering your incentive to go somewhere else does not mean you must commit to them before the standard may 15 deadline, there seems to be no valid reason for you to call over the rest of any of us

Can someone please explain why Duke students are calling people?
If they have already got the letter and/or email for acceptance, why is Duke calling people?

What is this call for???

Actually, I would need to commit to the fellowship before May ... I would need to commit asap.

standard thing that some schools do...like in college, once you got in the students called to congratulate and answer questions...

By the time this application cycle is over, no school will want me, because I have been systematically driven out of my mind.

I just got back from durham. Interviewed yesterday, the very last final day of interviews period. Duke sent out some acceptances last week, and they are sending out the rest this week. there were a lot of us there yesterday (~20) and RW said we were not at any disadvantage in any way.

So it seems to me that they only sent out acceptances last week to those people they knew they were going to accept for sure anyway, and they will be sending out the majority (50%+) this week. This is pure speculation. if not that high, I would say at the very very least, 25%. Remember, they still have to consider all those who interviewed last week as well.

Anyway, now the part you all want to hear. RW said also that they would be deciding on all of those who interviewed yesterday, today (3/11). So it seems like they will be making all final decisions and mailing them basically today or tomorrow. He said that either way, we should expect a PAPER decision (i.e. snail mail) by friday/saturday if you get saturday mail, or early next week the latest.

He didn't say anything about people getting phone calls, meaning that they most likely do not call all acceptees. so don't fret if you don't get a phone call. just wait for the mailman.

as a side note, last week my fortune cookie said "Good news will come to you by mail" ! hope it holds true!

Also, Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!

Same here! Unless medical school involves obsessively calling admissions offices, checking status pages 50+ times per day (more on weekends), and being really bitter, I doubt that I have the needed skills to be a good med student.

Also, THANK YOU chinny5187 for your report from The Decision Zone! Hope your fortune cookie comes true :luck:

Thanks for the informative post, Chinny. I could feel the hysteria rising.

I checked the dukemed site (not sure what I was expecting) and apparently everyone's gotten a little hyper about decisions.

Thanks for the info.

I have to disagree with you, They have already made decsions on everyone who's intereview (except those in the past week). They meet every tuesday to make decisions about the previous week (or 2?) interviewees. So I can find no reason why they would sedn 2 batches. The 2nd batch is probably a handful of decisions to people who interviewed the past week. So for you, you are not at a disadvantage. For me (and eveyrone else) lets pray for a waitlist!

**EDIT**
I guess there might be a few who were really borderline and they wait until the see the whole pool, then go back to the borderline group and admit a few of those.

I like thsi theory, I still have a chance!

I'm sure those of us who haven't heard are competing with these interviewees for spots. They don't roll, so they wouldn't diminish the spots to the point that these interviewees could be left out. I think the people who got accepted so far would be the ones they are absolutely sure about, no matter who interviewed next.

Sorry, I was replying while you were editing.

has anyone received any letters this week (the "second wave")? phone calls? have the med students even started calling?

read the above posts....it seems like they haven't even decided the second batch and that that batch would likely be very small

I recieved a packet yesterday in the mail... I'm not sure if that qualifies as 'second batch or not'

best of luck to all of you!!

Congrats!@

Did you happen to receive the 2nd look email the other day?

seems like nobody got any calls today

Actually I just got a call recently! It was so nice, completely made my day!

The Duke students typically call accepted students to ask if they have any questions about Duke and encourage them to attend second look.

i got called like an hour ago. i felt bad cuz i was really busy at work and was just like, "alright thanks man ill email you if i have any questions."

Duke knows how to treat its accepted students, I see! At this point, I'd be ecstatic if they notified me of an acceptance by a swift kick to the groin (or the more traditional letter, phonecall, or email..).

BTW, I also got a call today (though I already knew I was in, because of rolling MD/PhD admissions). Hang in there, everyone! :luck:

To everyone waiting for news from Duke. I live in CA and when I called was told that there are many, many more acceptances to be awarded this month. Just try to be patient and relax. Go about your daily activities and remember it will be OK! There are still 3 weeks left in March, don't lose hope! And if any of you are also from CA and interviewed early in the process, like 2007, I feel your pain!

:luck:

Awesome. I hope you're right!

haha that means you were batch numero uno. congrats

This thread is very quiet today. Is this the calm before the storm?

i was thinking the same thing. let's hope so!

On our interview day, they said they rank you numerically (out of 5 points?) and use a spreadsheet (a la Excel) to select applicants above a certain score cutoff. I am sure it's more complicated than that and at the very least is segregated by gender to ensure a 50/50 split.

I imagine they sent out 50-80% of acceptances and held back at least enough to save room for all the super-late interviewers. Maybe they accepted all applicants with 4.8+ out of 5.0 and are holding on those applicants with 4.6-4.8? In short, I don't think this "second wave" is going to be very large or noticeable. Already, like 12 people (incl. MSTP students) in this thread have posted with good news. That's almost 10% of their total acceptances and, based on the Columbia thread, I bet you won't see many more post with straight acceptances. Of course, I could be completely wrong.

no i think i would have to agree with you that most acceptances are out already and around 20% are left to be notified...whatever the percentage its not a very large one
