DVM class of 2014???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey! This is my first time applying, and I am also applying for the 2014 cycle. I will graduate soon with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. I am applying to my IS school (Illinois) and haven't decided where else yet. Looking forward to talking to you all in the future!

Georgie, what undergrad do you attend? I'm from IL too and I go to SIUE

Guess I better add myself in here. I will be applying for the first time this year. I am 42, so definitely one of the old timers of SDN. I have a Bachelor's in business, and owned my own animal care business for 11 years. All my vet experience was pre-entrepreneurship, so the advisor at CSU recommended I get some current experience. I am currently volunteering with an equine vet, and I work at a raptor rehab.

Because I only have 1 semester of physics, I can only apply to CSU, Iowa, & WSU. But I still have 2 pre-req's to do, so WSU is out for this cycle. That leaves CSU & Iowa. And then it comes down to tuition. I think I would like to try at least twice for a spot IS, so am seriously considering applying only to CSU this cycle. If I'm rejected, I'll apply to all 3 schools next cycle, and go wherever I get in then (being optimistic here). I have just applied for a second Bachelor's at CSU, not because I actually want one, but because it will allow me to take a full course load for the 09-10 school year. One last effort to demonstrate my ability to handle the work.

I love having so many contacts through SDN. You guys rock! 😀

Hey LivestockDoc,
Would you consider taking that second semester of Physics to get a broader range of schools, or are those the only schools you would want to apply to?

Hey Truth,

I would love to be able to apply to more schools. The kicker is that my first semester of physics was taken in 1984. Don't remember a blessed thing about it except that I didn't "get" most of it. I had a really poor teacher in high school, and a worse one in college. So, I'd have to take the entire year of it if I took it now. I guess I could take the full year at CSU starting this Fall, but I have a real phobia about that particular science. It's the only pre-req I didn't get an A in (got a C). I don't know if CSU has a decent physics teacher. Hmm. I'd just kinda resigned myself to my fate, but maybe I should reconsider...

You know, I dunno about you guys, but my Physics I course had next to nothing to do with my Physics II course. One was cannonballs and baseballs and velocity and trajectory - force, Newtons, gravity, blah blah. Two was capacitors and resistors and circuits - farads, ohms, crap like that. They weren't related at all, subjectwise.

I agree with Twelvetigers. I went to CSU, and Physics I and II were completely different subject matters. I didn't do very well in Physics I (which was weird because I did well in it in high school), but I did really well in Physics II. Some of that may have had to do with different professors too though.

On another note, LivestockDoc (and maybe you've already thought of this since you've talked to the advisor), but will the schools you are applying too accept your pre-reqs when they were taken so long ago? It would be awful to apply and find out the only reason you weren't accepted is that your pre-reqs were too old.

Twelvetigers, I must say I'm excited for you to apply to vet school and I, as well as everybody else on here I'm sure, wants to see you get in already! 🙂

Yes, Physics II is totally different than Physics I, but you may be able to take an online version of II. I ended up taking II online through my local cc after I graduated. My Physics I class had been in 2000, and I took II in ...I think it was 2007 or early 2008.

If you are still having Physics flash backs, I wouldn't risk it. However, if you could audit the first semester to get an idea of what you might know, you might be able to squeak on through the second for credit and open up those schools.

LivestockDoc,

Just wanted to say hey to another over 40 applicant. It's nice to know I am not the only one out there. After much deliberation I have decided to apply this year as well. I had planned on waiting until next but I will have all the pre-reqs done by spring of next year. I figure it can't hurt to try.

Sumstorm,
You wouldn't believe the comments I get when people ask what I am going to school for.

This is best place to get support.

Thanks all!!!

Hey kef (those are my initials too, btw),

Did you take either semester with Brian Jones? I think that's the right name. A lot of people seem to rave about him. If you did have him, what did you think? (In case I decide to retake the blasted course.)

That cursed 1st semester physics is my only old pre-req. Everything else has been taken 2004 and later. Thanks for asking though!

Hello Lambgirl!

Another (truly) non-trad, and a sheep person to boot! I had a flock of North Country Cheviots and a few Kathadins mixed in for good measure. I used them to train my Border Collie for herding competition.

Will you apply to other schools besides WSU, or are you committed to staying in the area?

Best of luck to us both!

Hmm. Both of my recent posts are listed as post # 75 for me. It would appear that the SDN software has lost the ability to count.

LivestockDoc,

Well, let me tell you my story with that. I took Physics I in a fall semester and had Lundeen. Jones was teaching I in spring and II in fall at that time (I think they were trying to decrease the number of people trying to get in his class). Physics I was not great.

I had heard such great things about Jones, that I didn't take II that spring. I tried to wait to take it in the fall with Jones. Then, the next fall, Jones switched his semesters, so he was only teaching I that fall. I ended up with Kern. I thought that he was great! A lot of people think his personality is too abrasive, but he teaches you what you need to know really well.

Meanwhile, I had a couple of friends who were taking Physics I with Jones that semester. They absolutely hated it! They said that he was a great guy, and he made class very fun. But, he spent all of class doing fun demonstrations, almost never did example problems in class, but expected people to do those problems on the test. So my friends all felt like class was interesting, but they were never prepared for the tests.

Personally, if that's how Jones teaches, then I'm glad that I didn't end up having him. I was very happy with what I learned from Kern.

Sorry for writing so much! Hope that information helps you. That's funny about our initials BTW.

The old University of Illinois prevet club had a list of courses that count as science courses for admissions. If you go through their course catalog ( or a list of transferable courses) it should give you an idea of the equivalent courses that will transfer. The new site also has a list of courses that will count.

The Illinois Course Applicability System should give you an idea if you have the equivalent course in your college, if you aren't going to UIUC.

Hi Lechatnoir! It is good to see another Illinois native!!! I don't want to reveal my undergrad for personal reasons, but I look forward to starting the application process!

On a side note, does anyone know what courses different schools include when calculating a science GPA? Particularly Illinois because that is my top choice since it is my IS.

I've emailed them about this question before and they use all science courses taken including repeats.

I've applied to 4 universities so far:

University of Guelph (OVC, in Ontario, Canada)
Murdoch University (Australia)
U of Melbourne (Australia)
U of Sydney (Australia)

I'm anxious to hear back (obviously!), I just sent my applications about a month ago and I should hear back any time between May and August!

I'll have completed most of my biology degree (just have to finish a calc. and a stats course). I'll be 23 if I get into Guelph, and 24 if I get in to Australia!

🙂 best of luck!!

littlehooves, the bunny in your avatar is adorable! Is that a beer he's drinking? Mine tries to eat styrofoam, but he's never gone for beer.

haha thanks. Its a Labatt, but its actually a picture I stole..its not my bunny 🙁 My old bunny used to eat doritos though! she would steal them and run behind the couch to munch on them! *bad bunny*!

My Snuffy (the bun in my avatar) eats all kinds of things he shouldn't: fried chicken, spicy fries, paint chips... He's like a toddler - if I turn my back for one minute, he's got something terrible in his mouth. I'm glad yours did it too; I was afraid he was "special".

Hello everyone!
I will be graduating with my BS in animal science next spring, and will be applying this cycle for the DVM class of 2014! Most of my experience is in small animal, but I have a strong interest in equine medicine/surgery. My interest in food animal has also been sparked via my exposure to it through my BS degree, so who knows where I will end up. Right now, I'll say my primary interest is in mixed animal.
I am applying only to Washington State this time around, it is my IS and I love their program and facilities. If I don't get in, I will look at applying to more schools for the 2015 cycle.
The only other thing I can say is let's get started already!!

I think that's what she's saying she's going to try to do, GellaBella (apply to the DVM program at the place she's in now).

I've considered that as an option (starting a PhD program here in 2010 if I don't get into combined program then applying while I'm in the PhD) but am on the fence about it because I fear putting all my eggs in one basket like that.

I hear that Nyanko. Another thought I had if I don't get into Davis this year is to start a PhD program with a professor whose reserach I'm really interested in and who is willing to take me on as a student. Do you know Dr. Vidal who does research on equine stem cells for tendon repair? Anyway, same concern. That would mean that I would be limited to applying to Davis year after year, until (hopefully) they let me in.

I'm not actually sure how funny I think that is at the moment, but, better to laugh right?

Hi everyone, just thought I would introduce myself as a new member and a 2014 applicant. 🙂 I guess I would be considered a non traditional student: I am a married 25 year old with my BA in Psychology from the University of West Florida, c/o 2007 (now back in school taking the rest of my science prerequisites). My husband is the absolute greatest, he is supporting me through this journey (not only emotionally but financially🙂). I have slowly been pursuing my dream for the past two years and it will hopefully become a reality since this is my application cycle!!!

I would love to practice large animal medicine and specialize in orthopedic surgery(I have a wonderful quarter horse which is coming with me to vet school and I just sold my Brahman cow ).

A few stats: 3.74 overall, 3.66 math and science, and 3.5 GPA last 45 hours
~2,000 hours volunteer and paid small animal experience
~250 hours large animal volunteer experience (plan on going back this summer for more hours)
~150 hours at the local zoo in the aviary
~100 hours miscellaneous barn experience

My #1 pick is Auburn (IS) but I am also going to apply to MSU and possibly Tuskegee (IS)

I can't wait to go through this crazy process and I am looking forward to reading and posting more!:hello:

Hey Everyone!
Great idea on a thread topic!

I will be applying to OVC (I'm in Canada) this fall and am scared out of my mind about it...I'm currently 20 (although will be 21 tomorrow...eek!) and completing my HBSc in Bio at UofT...I think first round (and hopefully last and only!) I'll just apply to OVC, and everywhere else I'm looking at some MAJOR debt...And depending on how it goes, if I don't get in, I'm going to be doing a masters in...well, something...haven't quite figured that out yet...😉

This summer I'll be taking the dreaded MCATs (required for OVC admission), working, and getting as much LA, exotics and wildlife experience as possible...I think I have equine and SA covered...I have my 3 references all picked out and informed, and so now, it's just a matter of getting crazy marks...(which biophysics is really not helping with...😛)

Hopefully everyone is getting ready now for applications, and best of luck to everyone!!! 😀

Hey everyone,

I'm pretty traditional as applicants go. Graduated in '07 with a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. This will be my third time applying (interviewed at UTennessee twice-not accepted either time). Hoping to improve my chances this year by applying at Tennessee, Georgia, Penn State, and North Carolina.

Good luck everyone!

The Penn-we's might have their feelings hurt by the insinuation that they go to a state school 😱

(it's the University of Pennsylvania - totally different from Penn State)

Hey everyone, I have really enjoyed this site. I don't get on to much but when I do it is really interesting to read all the discussions. I am 24 - just finshing up another semester - again - I guess you could say because I am retaking a lot of courses I didn't do so well in. Starting my technically second year this fall and I am applying to the University of Calgary's brand new vet program. I really hope I get in. Any other Albertans on this site applying to Calgary? Have a great summer everyone - good luck!

oops....mah bad. I never was good with remembering names of anything, schools or otherwise.

Hello everyone!!! I am a kinda traditional student at 22 with a BS in biology. I have a decent GPA and I am taking the GRE in a few weeks so hopefully I do well enough to stay competitive. My clinical experience is a little old (by about five years) but I figure that I can gain some more recent experience over the next year. I have however been working for a veterinary pathology lab in San Diego for about a year and it has been a really interesting experience. My schools that I am applying to are as follows:

Davis (my IS)
CSU
UPenn
UTen
KSU
Illinois
Florida
Western

It is a lot of schools (and money!) but I figure that even if I get rejected by them all, I can contact each one and get a really good idea about how to improve my application.

Good luck to everyone and I hope that we all get into our dream schools! I dont know about everyone else but it is very surreal and scary to finally be applying to vet school....

I'm a pretty traditional first time applicant. I'm 23 and graduated '08 in biology from a small liberal arts school. I meant to apply for the class of '12, but decided to wait a year because I was just too busy during the application process at an internship seriously in the middle of nowhere (getting application material together just wasn't going to happen). Then I was going to apply for the class of '13, but my internship at the time (which was supposed to make me stand out!) went so horribly wrong I decided to wait another year. So here I am!

I'm working at a research lab right now, and hopefully by the time the adcom reviews my application I'll have a publication or two in a well respected scientific journal. Hopefully they'll be excited about this, and won't ask too much about my crummy crummy internship. I love working with mice at work, but it does make me quite sad that we have to sacrifice so many... I try to treat them as humanely as possible, but it does weigh me down sometimes. I accidentally gashed a poor mouse open in the tummy with a needle the other day 😱 while trying to anesthesize her with an IP injection. I felt like such a jerk.

I'd like to think that I've done as much as I could possibly do to strengthen my application. My GPA is around 3.6, GRE's in the 83 +85th percentile, and I think I have decent experiences. About 500 hrs SA at a large humane society. Lab animal experience for 2 years (~50-60hr/week). A few thousand hrs wildlife rehab along with exotic and farm animal care. I know it's super competitive and that no one can be sure they'll get accepted anywhere, but I don't know how long it'll take me to recover if I don't get in anywhere. I dunno if I could muster up the courage to try again... sigh... :xf::xf::xf:

Places I'll be applying:

UC Davis: home state??? (I know i can pay in-state tuition b/c I went to high school in cali, but I dunno if I can be counted as an in-stater for admission purposes too. I called Davis so many times, and no one can answer)

Tufts: If cali isn't my home state, tufts is. I love their donated cadaver program.

UPenn: Heard great things about it. I think 4/5 applicants from my college have ended up there, so hopefully we can keep up the trend.

Cornell: they seem to value research

Ohio: OOS friendly

Anyhoo, really nice to know there's a bunch of you on the same boat! Look forward (?) to going through with the application process with all of you!

Hey minnerbelle, Western has a donated cadaver program as well. We have a "reverance for life" philosophy which means no animals are sacrificed for our purposes. Just thought I'd add that in there. Hopefully by this time next year I can tell all you 2014 er's more! 🙂

Im a first time slightly non-traditional applicant. I graduated in 2007 with a degree in Neuroscience from a school in VA (im originally from AZ) but have been working for the past two years in California studying spinal cord injury and treatment in rodent models (i know what you mean about the animal sacrifices getting you down minnerbelle). My job is cool in that i get a lot of pretty complicated surgical experience as well as the chance to work with really cool biotechnologies from human stem-cell xenografts to osmotic pumps but, ultimately, the job is not for me.

I also have additional experience working with a wildlife vet, working in a seal/ sea lion rehab facility, working at another wildlife rehab in AZ, working shelter adoptions, working in two different labs in college (one rodent one with rodents and birds), working in a small animal clinic and a tiny bit of shadowing an equine vet.

Ive been putting off the whole vet school application thing for the past two years because of an atrocious GPA (3.0 overall, slightly lower in required sciences.. at least for UCD though science in general is probably back at 3.0, and slightly higher than 3.0 for last 45 units). I guess i figured if i could get high GREs (im at 670V, 770Q and 5.5W... i think thats 95%-88%-90%) and a lot of experience i might have a shot. Of course i will never know if i dont actually take a deep breath and give it a try so, this year, i will apply to Davis (IS, top choice.... kind of why i moved to cali in the first place), Colorado, Tufts and maybe a few others (i have a very beaten up, overly highlighted and bookmarked copy of a book describing all US accredited vet schools).

Heres hoping :xf: .

Hey everyone, it's great seeing all these introductions by fellow applicants. I'm looking forward to sharing the year's experiences and suspense 😱 with you all.

I'll be getting my B.A. in Biology with a minor in Theatre in the spring of 2010. I'm a 19 year old first-time applicant, and still deciding which schools I'd like to apply to aside from the definites of Tufts, Cornell, and UPEI. Most of my animal experience is with large animals, wildlife, and horses, though I have been working in an SA hospital this year and enjoying that too. Hobbies include vaulting (and other less traditional equine activities such as bareback/bridleless and roman riding), reading good books, fishing and foraging for food, letterboxing, hiking/rock climbing and other outdoorsy things.

As an bio/theatre person, I seem to spend a lot of my time scampering between rehearsals or laboratories -I have also been known to rehearse in the laboratory and babble about animals with my theatre colleagues. Anyone else hopelessly enamoured with both the arts and the sciences? What kinds of activities are you all into?

I'm also applying for the class of 2014, and looking forward to the insane amounts of waiting we'll all be doing with one another! I'm a 20 year old MALE (woo!), on my way to 21 in the next couple weeks. Not entirely sure about my list yet, but will definitely include UofEdinburgh.

I'm definitely not a sucker for the performing arts, but I do seem to have this obsession with overloading my schedule with foreign languages. I've taken a few semesters of spanish, german, and now french as well. So, i'm the guy who pulls out flash cards in the middle of a physics lecture 😎.

looking forward to stressing out with you all.

Willowhand, my undergrad degree is a BFA with painting concentration. Those were a good four years! I still do some art to make extra money and as stress relief.

Posted on the Facebook 2013 thread but thought it def applies to future applicants:

Hi all - Just received this email from my undergrad advisor and although she talks about pre-med apps I think it applies to all pre-prof disciplines as well as those applying for jobs. Who knows which employer, internship/residency director will have access to check your profile:

" Hi Students,

This is urgent. At the conference for admissions officers and preprofessional health advisors in Santa Fe, we spent several sessions talking about the use of Face Book in medical school admissions and many do check. Please accept these suggestions as serious and urgent.

1. Don't post anything you wouldn't want your mother, your boss, an admissions officer, or me to see. (Please don't block me or I won't be able to warn you if something could hurt you.)

2. Go through all your pictures of anything that might be even slightly inappropriate (folks looking drunk, holding bottles of liquor, in revealing clothes, discussing parts of anatomy, using foul language, etc) and take off all the tags--especially of people applying to health prof. schools. Even if the picture itself is ok, take off the tags if it is in a group of pictures that might lead one to believe the person was at an inappropriate place/party.

3. Then go back and erase any of those kinds of pictures or pix of friends in groups of those pictures.

4. Take out any comments that look like you are trying to be sneaky, or you wouldn't want the schools you or your friends are applying to to see.

5. Some of your friends are applying now, so don't wait.

I realize everyone is enjoying all the fun stuff (and you should) at the end of school, but you also don't want to brand * Your School* as a party school of students who might not show the best judgement in posting on Facebook
because YOU ARE FROM * Your School* AND WILL BE JUDGED AS A PRODUCT OF THAT SCHOOL --Best wishes on your finals and have fun (but be discrete)"

I'm gonna probably be applying, dependant on if I start a Masters or an MBA (no for the former, yes for the latter).

As for where, definitely A&M, CSU, LSU, and probably Mississippi. Other schools will depend on the stats that get released later and the schools I will be most competitive at. I (think I) have a decent GPA (3.4 at the moment but should go up after this semester) and an OK GRE. Will (hopefully) be improving the GRE over the summer though.

Oh and I'm a 22 year old, senior Biomedical Sciences student at Texas A&M. Graduate here in 6 more days (whoop!). Third time applicant (but third's the charm right?). I like music, motorcycles, food, and long walks on the beach.

I guess my 'dream school' is A&M, because it's in-state and won't leave me as penniless for as long as other options, but I'd be just as content to go anywhere else. Maybe more so (change of scenery and all that jazz).

Most likely I'll end up doing mixed animal medicine because I like the diversity and wouldn't mind living in the 'country' (out further than the suburbs, at the least).

Hello everyone!

I have been lurking/PMing on here for a few months, but this is my first time posting. This is my second application cycle. I am a nontraditional applicant - turning 28 this Friday!!! 🙂 I applied last year to my IS (IL), interviewed, but did not get accepted. I went in for a file review and am working on fixing my stats - experience was my fall-back. I did not apply to any other schools, and I most likely will only apply to IL this year as well.

I am currently a high school science teacher (next year will be my 7th! year) and decided on a change of career a few years back. I have to admit - my dream career was always to be a veterinarian, but I chickened out after horror stories I was told as a senior in high school (the stories of: this one girl had straight A's and still didn't get in...blah blah blah), and opted for the teaching route b/c I thought I could enjoy it. I soon learned that my passion is for vet med and nothing else will do (I did some soul searching after deciding teaching wasn't right for me), so I'm working toward fulfilling my dream. I have been working on finishing my MS in Biology (hopefully I'll complete my research and thesis this summer), I've TA'd two summers, and I've been working with vets and volunteering for some time now.

I look forward to applying and hope things work out this time around. I am happy that I applied last year and got a chance to interview, so I am hoping that my hard work will pay off for Round Two!

To everyone – congrats on all of your accomplishments and hard work, and good luck this year!!! This is so exciting!!

Welcome KPJoos!

Now that finals are over (just finished last one:boom:)...

.....LETS GET THE SHOW ROLLING! I'm ready to go!

Hey everyone. I'm 25 and technically graduated from UCSB c/o 2008, but actually walked in 2006 and consider myself a graduate of that class (I needed to retake biochem since is seriously kicked my butt).

I grew-up in SoCal and then have been living out in Las Vegas, Nv for the past 2 years working as an AVT at one of the largest clinics here. I've always worked with animals, either at small animal practices or running a no-kill dog shelter, but have finally made the decision to try and take my career to the next level. I was enrolled in an LVT program but stopped once I realized that I would never be fully satisfied.

I'm scared to death of the application process, but figure I might as well give it a shot:xf:. I haven't quite finalized my list but am definitely looking at Davis, Auburn, Tufts, Purdue, Kansas and Ohio.

And just as some other background info: I'm fascinated by behavior/training (anyone have suggestions on schools?), have a deep love of any dog considered a 'pit' and I would love to travel the world more.

Hey, welcome! Are you going to be considered a NV resident for applications? If so, then I'd suggest looking into the other WICHE schools as well...

Anyone else hopelessly enamoured with both the arts and the sciences? What kinds of activities are you all into?

Willow, I'm a bio/theater person too! I have a B.S. in biology and a drama minor from Tufts.

As an introduction, I'm a bit non-trad as I'm 29 and have been working as a research tech in a transgenics lab for the past 7 years. Since 2006 I've been slowly taking the vet school pre-reqs that I never had to take to graduate from Tufts - which surprisingly was almost all of them!

I applied last year but didn't get in, mostly due to lack of varied experience and a lower undergrad GPA. I've been working on getting more experience but unfortunately since I haven't been able to find a full time job at a vet clinic yet, I've been stuck working at my lab while shadowing at a small animal practice and an equine clinic. The thing that scares me is that while I do have over 7000 hours of lab animal experience, by the time I apply again I'll only have about 200 hours each in small animal, equine, and shelter experience, and possibly 50 hours with wildlife. Never sure how much is enough...

Next semester I'll be going back to school full time to take courses beyond the prereqs to prove that I can handle a full courseload of science classes. Should be fun doing that in addition to applying AND working part-time. Oh yeah, and I'm also debating whether to apply to grad school at the same time. Think my fall is going to be busy?!

Currently I think I'm applying to:
Tufts - I love Tufts, #1 choice
Cornell - in state
Kansas - high % of OOS, I've heard good things
UPenn - high % of OOS and I have connections to one of the faculty members
Western - Cali, no restrictions on IS/OOS

Aside from those, I have no idea where to apply. I'm considering cutting out any school that accepts less than 40% OOS, but that would knock out a couple that I've been hearing good things about like Ohio, Tennessee, and Iowa.

Ok, I did NOT intend this to get so long, but that's me! I talk a lot...I'm so glad to have found this forum! I think I'm going to need all the advice and support I can get this year. 🙂

Hey...
I saw some of you were talking about taking physics... I never took it in undergrad (went to University in Ontario) because I didn't get a chance to take it in high school and didn't want to have a big fat F on my transcript. So instead of wasting another year and taking it in the next school year, does anyone know of good online ones I can take that would satisfy the pre-reqs for physics???
Thanks
😀

Hi Guys! I will be a first time applicant and almost 26 when I apply this fall. I've always wanted to be a vet, and started out pre-vet as a freshman and sophomore in college. I never had to study in highschool and didn't realize the rigor of my coursework. I got decent grades, but not the 4.0 that my advisor said I would need to get into vet school. I got discouraged and changed majors. I became an elementary school teacher, but was never fulfilled. I haven't been satisfied because I still have an intense desire to pursue my dream of vet med. I'm a PA resident so I'll definitely be applying to UPenn and Ohio state. I have a high GPA from my education degree mixed with a low 3.00 from my science grades. Overall it gives me a mediocre GPA, but I have a lot of experience to help my application. I need to apply to schools that allow classes that are over 6 years old. Any advice??

🙂
