Easy to get a criminal record: How I went to Jail for "STUDYING in the library"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Let me get this straight... you let a library security officer take you to jail...?

tumblr_ljkahzoz671qanb21o1_500.gif

Yes. I am a 5'1 95 lb petite brown girl. She = LARGE african american lady. There was no match. She even hand cuffed me. actually my wrists are so thin, that the regular metal hand cuff was too big for me (lest I run away) so they got those belt-type cuffs for me. Crazy stuff, i tell you.

In some ways, it's a funny. most people in 20s go to jail for DWIs, drugs, stealing or etc. I went to jail because I was caught studying in the library .

Uh HELLO!!! They don't use handcuffs anymore, they use zip ties. Nice try 🙄

HELLO!

That being said, there are some unique factors at play here, however, I don't have to discuss them here with you, of course. Some of the include: racial bigotry of the front desk staff (I have send a complain to the head librarian about the way the day staff was treating me and she spoke to them; however this harbored more resentment towards me by the front desk staff), the night-staff from 6pm-6am in the library had no problem with me, my learning disability that means that I have to be in a library space, the fact that it was a public access place not a private garden of one person, the support of librarian and the head of campus police, the arresting campus office's own personal attitude, and the lack of any explaination that was given to me by the arresting officer.

no. it had nothing to do with race. its nice that you're starting to accept some responsibility here but you're still really reaching to blame everyone else. i'm sure there were plenty of other brown people in the library going about their business just fine.

you weren't singled out for your race. you did something wrong, got a warning, and showed disrespect by ignoring that warning so the officers thought they'd make an example of you and give you a hard time by taking you to jail and making you appear in court.

skinMD,

I agree with you. It was very difficult for me to admit that I had done something wrong, even though it didn't cause any strong damage etc. The lawyer asked me two times "why did you go back there" [I gave some reaosning] then he asked me again. Later on, I realized that he asked me not because he wanted to know , but because he was making a point.

Accepting responsibility would ensure that this doesn't happen again in my life because similar circumstances: in airports, in school, in work places are likely to occur and it would prevent me from achieving my max. potential in a future career.

My sense of self is indeed tarnished if I derive some kind of pleasure or reassurance by getting away with such things. I have discussed this with a therapist but such things take a while to change....but yes, I'm a work in progress

You're a girl? And they arrested you?

That's awesome.

Why is that awesome? And why does it have to do with being a girl?

I learned a lot in the Jail, and met some interesting women. It was definately an experience 🙂, also see the amazing old psycharist that I meant ....and talked about earlier. It was so amazing, hello!!! Except for when i didn't eat anything for 24 hours b.c I don't like bologne sandwich etc

you took your original post down because people didn't approve of your story but you keep bumping it with ever more outrageous replies even though you know that the op is saved in a comment on the front page...
:eyebrow:

So I was looking through OP's post history because I'm bored and wanted to investigate whether this is the second coming of Once (another widely ridiculed socially inept brown girl who brought much amusement to SDN). I was shocked to see that you already graduated from college. Such actions would be slightly more understandable and could be chalked up to immaturity if you were 17 or 18 years old but it's even more alarming now that I know you're 22+ years old.

Oh SkinMD, are you talking about the girl who felt like she had no friends and delayed sexual maturity? 🙂

Oh SkinMD, it would be nice if you had compassion for me, although it's not needed since you are stranger and I don't define my self worth and self-compassion on other strangers's comments.

I wish there was a shot for adulthood? Although I think we are all adult in our unique ways and not so adult in others...

I am obliged to ask/state, what does race have to do with anything?

🙄 This must be a cry for help/attention.

I would just like to add that OP used the word HELLO out of context so many times that i stopped taking him/her seriously before i finished reading the initial post. My only advice OP....if you are lucky enough to get an interview...... Dont do that. Thank you.

I will get interview(S). Nevertheless, i appreciate your tips.

Just keep in mind that should any of us be your interviewer it will likely be an auto rejection...😉

How people present and talk about their professional selves can be very different that their private thoughts or behavior at times.

Except this wasn't private behavior you were describing in your original post. It was a public interaction.

Is this real life...?

Apparently yes....

And we'd know OP in many ways....

Who else will HELLO? every freaking sentence?

Who else will have a charge for repeated trespassing in another university's library?

How many other applicants will be mid 20s but with the maturity level of a preteen?

Don't forget the physical self-description given by the OP.

I wanted to post my story to give people an idea but due to some of the comments here, I have taken it off.

Cheers.
well that plan backfired.

Often times I would go there and then get up to go outside to get lunch or snack or take a walk. I have a lot of studying to do (HELLO!!!) and often stay there for hours. I think the library staff got passive-aggressive at me (ie. the front desk people the workers etc) b.c they had to push some extra chairs, or something. Or when I would return to the library, they would have to find my name and sign me in again in their roster. So maybe they were just annoyed there. A couple of times they had to tell me to not bring or eat food on my desk. Fine. Hello. A few times during finals weeks, i left my books on the desk and then went to sleep at home for a 6 hours or so. Sure you are agitated, maybe, but hello, that is not criminal?

Then the sleeping over thing happened. I told that lady in front desk that yes, this happened and I'm happy to talk to all parties but I have a final exam in 1 hr and I have to go now. Can you please give me back my study materials? I had gone to sleep in a different part of the library and they just cleaned up --many library pick up materials left on the desk after morning swipes etc.

Well, she was like "This is just one NEW THING...I am going to call the campus police". I had to stay focused on my goal IE MY FINAL MY GRADES. so I went back to my desk. The campus police came and couldn't locate me b.c they didn't know what i looked like. Well i told them that this is me and the officer lady just gave me a criminal citation warning and told me to not come back again (or else i'll get arrested_i wasn't sure that she meant by that but w/e) and leave immediately. she escorted me from the campus. WTF? Hello. But again she even said that if i DIDN'T leave, she would take me to the COUNTY JAIL . i was crying etc.

Then the next day I went and talk to the police head guy who said that he'll lookinto the matteR. The next day I went there to do my work. I was sitting on a desk and the offier comes and hand cuffs me and takes me to the JAIL.

Yes I was in the wrong to have gone to campus when they told me not to. The reasoning may have been personal bias, and no reasoning at all. but its' private property even if it's a library. And I think the librarian front desk lady must have said not good things to me to the officer, blah blah ____ insert [!!#$#$@$#@#$@]

Long story short: Stay out of silly people and their silly stuff . If they say don't come back, then don't until the matter is resolved and you have written permission. Bad things can happen and we all have more imp things to do with our times. The district judge court and lawyers also have better things to do with their time, like FIGHTing other more lucaritive crime (drugs/ marijuana, DWI, theft, homocide, violence, etc). Also, sometimes they are happy to prosecute!!!!

Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at "hello".

I am obliged to ask/state, what does race have to do with anything?

Playinge the race-card! I guess a 5'1" petite brown girl should not be arrested after she commits a crime. It's like someone jumping in a big pile of **** after being warned not to, standing in it waist-deep, then complaining that it stinks, crossing her arms and complaining all the time that all this isn't fair.

Up until now, I only had the suspicion OB was a troll. Don't think he's a girl either.

Hello Everyone.

1) I can't sit here and "prove" my self/race/gender etc to you. It's not at all relevant to the meaning of this post, but I don't like when people assume that I'm trolling. It's a bit disheartening.

2) Yes, I went to Court, talked to the Judge and the Prosecutors. Lessoned learned. My situation wasn't as bad because it was a pubic access library, I was studying etc. However, I understand that my personal lofty benign goals should never the less be conducted in a way that don't tick others off or cause disturbance. It is part of living in a society and part of the social contract that Locke, Hobbes and Rousseau talked about. To me, it may be justifiable because in my eyes, I'm not causing any strong harm but I agree that it is not within social norms and part of being a productive citizen. I may get good grades etc, but I also have to learn to live a life and be fair. It's not hard. I mean it only takes a few extra mins to wrap up and pick up your things before you leave the library, etc. Point noted. Will improve.

Thank you all.

You remind me of another poster, but that one claimed she was a blond

well, as long as you learned your lesson.

So I was looking through OP's post history because I'm bored and wanted to investigate whether this is the second coming of Once (another widely ridiculed socially inept brown girl who brought much amusement to SDN).

For the hell of it, I took a look back at OP's posting history too. I remember that thread! Oddly enough, when I opened this thread for the first time, I thought it was the most pathetic thread SINCE that other thread!

1) I can't sit here and "prove" my self/race/gender etc to you (Pics or it didn't happen is right... what kind of library was this again...? Oh... right... a PUBIC ACCESS LIBRARY.... see below...). It is part of living in a society and part of the social contract that Locke, Hobbes and Rousseau talked about. To me, it may be justifiable because in my eyes, I'm not causing any strong harm but I agree that it is not within social norms and part of being a reproductive citizen. Oh... IS IT? 😱

Pics or it didn't happen.

Anyone can post a fake pic, so it's useless. A real name would be nice, since court records are public. A case number and date of apearance would make this poster legit.

Shoe on head, Sharpie in... mouth, and a sign reading 'HELLO!' would suffice.

By any chance, are you Once?
