We should seriously start an SDN series on great food in interview cities.

Anyway, interview at the U. of Maryland for a Californian. I'm staying near Camden Yards and don't have access to a car. With only one night there, I want to maximize my trip.

Where is the best food? Best crab cakes? Best snacks? Favorite hole-in-the-wall treasures?

Mo's Crab and Pasta Factory on Albermale Street. Also Red Star in Fells Point is awesome.
Good luck!

Oh yeah, Mo's is AWESOME! One of my fav places is Matsuri in Fed hill, you can walk there from Camden yards, they have great Japanese food. Thai Arroy up the street is pretty good too.

I second Matsuri, if you don't have a car (there's actually a much better place up North close to Union Memorial hospital). Little Havana is one of my favorite spots, too, and not far from where you will be staying. There's Blue Agave in Fed Hill that I've been meaning to try forever. I'd stay away from the Harbor area restaurants (it's all chain food - Cheesecake Factory, La Tasca, M&S Grille, etc), but you could check out Rusty Scupper (really cool location - I'm still not 100% sure how you get there!)

When do you interview? If it's the same day our exam, you should come join the med students for post-exam night 🙂

Wow Mo's does look good from their website. Looks a little far on a map, though.

Blue Agave & Little Havana look promising too.

Ohhh the choices!

My roommate and I live right by Camden Yards if you need a place to crash.

the public transportation in Baltimore is really easy to get around on and reasonably cheap.

have fun, don't get shot.

Google maps isn't showing a stop in Federal Hill or near Mo's...

Am I reading this wrong or am I going to have to risk the ol' drive-by?

does Google maps show you the light rail tracks too?

I see it now

You could walk from the Camden Yards stop to the Inner Harbor. It's not that far.

The Helmund for Afghan food (owned by the family of the president of Afghanistan and reasonably priced!), Ixia and Sascha's if you're into more upscale stuff, Minato for sushi... all in Mt. Vernon on North Charles St.
Also Pazo and Tapas Teatro for tapas.

My one inner harbor recommendation would be Roy's (Hawaiian).

Baltimore has great food, don't waste it on the inner harbor tourist trap chains.
PM me if you want directions or more details.

Now I really want to go out to dinner...

Woahh Ixia looks nice but the lack of prices scare me. The Helmund looks pretty good too but I've been eating too much Middle Eastern food these days. Can you really get too much basmati rice and lamb, though? Nah.

Where to eat in Baltimore?

Inside, with the door locked; and a trusty pistol by your side. Unless you want to be eating through a tube after you get shot for roaming the streets.

lol...I love people who try to make Baltimore seem worse than it actually is.

"According to crime statistics there were 269 homicides in Baltimore in 2005, giving it the highest homicide rate per 100,000 of all U.S. cities of 250,000 or more population. Though this is significantly lower than the record-high 353 homicides in 1993, the homicide rate in Baltimore is nearly seven times the national rate, six times the rate of New York City, and three times the rate of Los Angeles"

You're right, Baltimore sounds like a veritable paradise.

The homicide rate in Baltimore is extremely high. However, each of the areas mentioned in this thread: around the medical school, Camden Yards, Federal Hill, Fell's Point, Mount Vernon, the Inner Harbor - are all rather safe. Ignorant people who have never been to or lived in Baltimore love to joke about "getting shot," as if it's funny. The sad reality is that there is a lot of violent crime in this city. The good news is that it's not around the school, or any of the areas suggested to the OP by other posters. There are actually many very nice, safe neighborhoods to visit in Baltimore.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone quote the above statistics, I'd be a rich clown. If you want trouble, you can find it here. It's equally as easy to stick to the nicer sides of town. Not really different from most other large, urban areas. Are you going to quote the syphilis or the heroin addiction statistics next? I doubt that the OP plans to hire a prostitute or shoot up while he's here. But hey, what do I know? I've only managed to avoid being shot or otherwise murdered for the past year and a half.

The Helmand is heady. You won't get shot. Enjoy your time!

Alright! Final decision is Ixia after I head north to explore campus. They seem to have the best selection and even though I'd love to try Little Havana and they're open till 12, they're opposite from campus. Mo's is totally in the wrong direction too... woe is I.

If anyone wants to meet up at Ixia or elsewhere (The Helmand?) on the 9th, let me know!

All I know is that Baltimore raped my father and killed my mother. You'd expect me to hold a grudge against that summabitch!

Additionally, the majority of the people who are killed in Baltimore are actively involved in the drug trade, be it as a "vendor" or as a "consumer." There is violent crime against citizens not involved in illicit trade, but these are generally on par with the rates of other cities.

Your risk of gettin' a cap busted in yo' a** is significantly lower than the crime statistics would suggest as long as you don't try and set up shop on the corner of Fayette and S. Carey.

Obviously you've never had to walk there from the Lexington Market garage. I agree, there are tons of good spots in Baltimore, and the school is by no means the worst, but it's not a place where you want to let your guard down too much, especially after dark.

All I can really say is I've been to Baltimore once and didn't like it. While walking in the Inner Harbor, one of the poor guys asking for money threatened my fiancee & me with a baseball bat after we wouldn't give him money. Good thing that's a safe part of town and we didn't actually get hurt...

We also went to one of the "nice" parts of town with a relative to get dinner. Thuggish looking guys were walking their pit bulls. Maybe it's harmless, I dunno, but if that's a friendly part of town, you guys don't get out much. That's probably equivalent to the worst parts of town where I live.

For an out of towner, Baltimore's pretty scary, especially if you're not used to the big city life. I may joke about not getting shot, but that's just because when I was there I was constantly afraid I'd get mugged or something.

Don't worry my friend. Once Meatwad gets his revenge on that damned Baltimore, no one will have to live in fear.
