i interviewed at emory in nov and still have not heard back from them. i have a 3.6 hpa and 35 mcat. why is it that emory has still not accepted me? at first i thought this should be a safety school with me and i was looking to get into a much more prestigious school like duke. now i haven't had any OOS interviews and emory has not even accepted me. is this normal? should i call them?
Hey... Okay, so, first thing first is to realize that Emory isn't a safety school for anyone. I interviewed in mid-December, and the January review will be my first. I would be honored to tears to get an acceptance at any point from that school. They are ranked very highly, and even though they may not be top ten, they are just as good of a school if not better. Emory doesn't have the long-standing tradition of research excellence the top tens have. But they are striving to improve that, which they are being very successful with, and raises them even higher in my eyes. If you are choosing schools based on their rankings, you're not looking at schools for the right reasons.
Secondly, and this is not meant to be any sort of bragging, you can look at my stats, and see that I have not heard back post-interview from most of my schools. Now, I got my app in late, so this is still early for me, but I am thrilled to have an acceptance at my state school. Being a doctor for the rest of my life means way more to me than where I go for the next four years. I encourage you to consider the long-term goal and not the vehicle.
It is still early in Emory's process, and you've only been under one review so far, so there is no reason to fret.
I do want you to know that shadowing a few doctors does not make you over qualified. Many of us have extensive work (months or years, some full-time) in the medical profession and with doctors. While I am sure you are very proud of your accomplishments, and have a right to be - you seem to be a very good applicant, please keep in mind that no one person necessarily deserves to be a doctor more than another, nor will a person with higher scores necessarily be a better doctor. Adcoms know this, and they will choose the best people for their schools.
Please keep working towards your dream, improving your app, and praying for more interviews/acceptances. But in the meantime, be honored to have even been invited to interview at a school like Emory, and appreciate all of us for what we bring to the table, and try to see us all on the same level.
