Even if you are not choosing between these two schools, please let me know what your input is. Thanks.

Last time this poll was done, the two schools seemed pretty even. Since then, Emory has drastically changed their curriculum while Mt. Sinai has stayed more or less the same.

Besides the new curriculum, other things that have changed at Emory since that previous poll include the incredible new med school building, and first year is now pass-fail (and I believe they've changed the second year to P/F as well, but not absolutely sure yet).

I haven't visited Mt. Sinai yet though.

It's funny, I was just thinking to myself the other day that if I had to choose between just these 2 schools, it would be a tough decision.
I interviewed at (and was accepted to) both schools. I really liked them both, but if I had to choose one of those two, I'd probably choose Emory. First of all, though I'm from NY and love it (for the most part), I also love Atlanta and a change of scenery would be great for me. The new med school building is awesome and I like the new curriculum setup (1.5 years basic sciences, with a 5 month "Discovery period"). Not to mention the fact that the cost of living is considerably lower in Atlanta than in NY. The one thing I don't like about Emory is the fact that Grady is miles away from the med school, but that's not a big deal.

Both schools are awesome though. The faculty at both schools seem really supportive and really take student feedback into consideration, which I appreciate. Good luck with your decision!

Hey Lovely, when did you become and asst mod?
Congrats!

I think this would be a tough decision too. The two schools are similar enough in ranking though that it doesn't matter, although Emory might have the edge in research/clinical having grady memorial(although not sure how things will work out with that hospital's future) and maybe more research. MD/MPH would be a big pro of Emory if interested. Atlanta would require a car, but would be cheaper. I think I would probably go with Mount Sinai though, but that's mainly because of NYC. I think location would probably be the biggest factor whether you'd want Atlanta or New York, since they seem pretty comparable otherwise with academics and reputation though Emory prob has the edge, and it's pretty important where you'll spend four years of your life.

as for saving $, atlanta is not the cheapest place to be (especially now that they are closing off clairmont housing - you'd have to find your own place) and you have to remember mt. sinai has rent-controlled housing.

personally, i think it depends on the students and the location. you also might want to think about the programs mt sinai has (medical spanish etc). from what i was told at the emory interview, they don't have those programs. you have to do all of that during the "discovery" period.

also, is emory true P/F? or H/P/F?

Ditto. I love New York City, though I've never been to Atlanta. I'll probably think it's way too hot, anyway.

I was under the impression that the Clairmont housing was on the expensive side compared to apartments you could generally find in Atlanta. At least this was the impression I got from the Emory undergrads that interviewed with me, and from the brochure.

As far as medical Spanish is concerned, Emory doesn't have a formal program, but some first years have put together their own medical spanish classes for their classes. It's not formal, but I guess it's better than nothing.

A choice between the two schools would be tough nonetheless, and if I was choosing between the two schools, location would probably be a huge factor (meaning, whether or not I'd want to stay in NY).

does it exist? i thought maybe mt sinai had something similar given the location of elmhurst in queens but i may be wrong.

emory, just because they're making changes and moving forward which you'd be at the cusp of (which is always exciting!)

I have been in Atlanta for around 6 years and would pick Emory- I recently was down at the Pediatric hospital shadowing and I LOVE the doctors I worked with. Everyone was so nice and I could see myself there in a heartbeat. I know lots of schools have good hospitals but all the docs I was with went the extra mile to make sure my stupid pre-med brain understood as much about their topic as I could!
