Hello SDN! I am a freshman in college hoping to pursue the field of dentistry. I was looking over dental school requirements and most have 6 credits of english as a requirement. Some specify composition, literature, and/ or rhetoric. I was just wondering if ANY english class under these topics of study would fulfill the english requirements. e.g post-modern feminist literature ( I just made that up), but would that fulfill a literature requirement? Or are they looking for more of a mainstream class? Also, would it matter if i took two literature or two composition classes, or should i mix them up? Thanks in advance for your responses and help!

P.S I took AP English Composition in high school and received three elective credits in english electives. I couldn't use those to fulfill part of the english requirements for dental school could I?

AP credits do not count towards the prereqs so you will just have to take an extra course. I would stick to an English or literature course.
Just be aware that some schools require 8-9 credits of English.

This english requirement really needs to be explained better. "English" class on women in literature or "Humanities" class on African American in the early 90s... both requiring books and 6 midterm papers.... is there really a difference even though one falls in english and the other in humanities?
If you REALLY wan't to make sure you meet this requirement from all angles, take TWO composition classes and ONE literature course, all three from the English department. For all the schools I applied to, my writing extensive courses (humanities, upper level sciences, etc which were designated as my university's upper level writing courses) fullfilled the english requirement. I only had 4 credits under the english department (actually it wasnt even the english department... it was the "writing" department), but all the schools I applied to let me use my other classes to fullfill that requirement becuase they were basically english courses themselves.

To be on the safe side, contact all the schools you want to apply to. Most will let you use a writing extensive course, especially if it fullfills your university's writing/english requirement for your degree.

NOTE: AP english does not count at most schools.

which schools require 8-9 units of English?

honostly, I dont realy think that english is that signifacant of a class for most dentestry schools out there. when was that lasttime a dentist has to write essays, nor have they needed to due anything simalar to that.

LORs

I need 6 credits to fulfill my degree requirements at my school. 3 from a literature class and 3 from a writing class. Due to a high ACT score I automatically placed out of the literature class and received 3 credits for it, but never took the class. I just skipped ahead to the writing class. Would this satisfy the 6 credit hour requirement as most dental schools? Since I technically did not take the class I just received 3 credits for it from having a high ACT score. I did not get a grade in the class either obviously.

Yes... who need knows English.... 🙄

English is just as important as any of the other requirements.

For whoever it was that asked earlier, ~8 credits / 1 year of English is required by half the schools out there.

I think you can find better things to do with your time... this is a professional forum and not your social networking playground. How do you expect to get into dental school acting like a 5 year old child?? 🙄

Yea, I volunteer at the local YMCA a lot so I know how to deal with dysfunctional children. I know a lot of people on this forum ostracize you because of your inappropriate and juvenile behavior/comments, but I believe in taking a more constructive approach. I know you're truely a good person deep...deep deep down, and this behavior is just a cry for help. I really don't believe its too late for you like others have said. I still think you have the potential to integrate yourself into society as a fully funcitonal member, you just need a little push. I'm just here to provide that guidence 🙂

n e ways .. back on topic.. in my undergrad..

english requirement is pretty well defined as
"English Composition I" , and "English Compostiion II"..

rhetoric, or theory class.. .. doesnt normal eng comp cover all that jawndus ; i mean go to ur advisor (course or pre health) and ask him what most bio majors (or whatever ur major is) take...

mr awesome

I've taken COM 101 - Comp and Research and ENG 309 - World Literature at my school. I'd assume these would fulfill the english requirement.

On top of that I've taken an ethics class, which was a ton of writing, and I transferred in a speech class from another school. Given all this, I really hope I don't have to take another english class. I'm really sick of writing papers!
