I'm currently a statistics undergrad student and thinking about applying to PhD programs in a couple years. I enjoy math very much and I am currently debating between PhD programs in biostatistics or epidemiology, more specifically pharmacoepidemiology. My goals and interests lie in the pharmaceutical industry, but I'm currently confused between the roles and responsibilities of a biostatistician vs a pharmacoepidemiologist. Do they perform the same duties in the industry? Which two fields will have better job prospects? Thanks.

The roles are quite different:

Biostats in pharma work mostly on clinical trials.

Pharmacoepis work mostly in comparative effectiveness, risk-benefit, and post-marketing safety.

The type of work itself is also quite different.

Generally, biostats departments are bigger than epi departments. The training is also quite different, and the focus of the training is much different, as well.
