In a democracy, the rights of the minority should take precedence over the desires of the majority.

Write a unified essay in which you perform the following tasks. Explain what you think the above statement means. Describe a specific situation in which the desires of the majority might take precedence over the rights of the minority. Discuss what you think determines whether the rights of the minority or the desires of the majority should take precedence.

how would you guys approach this? what's ur interpretation and examples? how would you resolve the contradiction?

Here's my notes. Done in 7 minutes.

democratic society- majority rules, individual rights and freedoms.
minority- not always a number. ex: women.
majority-not always a number. ex: apartheid (power)
like examples-civil rights movement, women's movement. hate crimes. separate but not equal. religious freedoms.
unlike examples-prop 8. religious extremists eg polygamy.
resolve- Minority groups should have the same opportunities and privileges as the majority. Desires of majority should be followed when they do not impinge upon individual rights and freedoms.
