Evms

No we have not heard anything. The only date they set for telling us our status is post graduation. So the earliest we will hear is 5-19. Other than that they have no set time frame in which we hear back from them. It could be the day after graduation, or the day before school starts in Aug.

Packlax,

Have you heard back from any other schools you have applied to?

Yeah, I mean we hear back from those schools in the same time frame as all other applicants, so we have been hearing back from them as the semester has progressed.

waitlisted

not sure why they bother keeping a waitlist of 200+ people

have any of the 20 students been accepted at other schools?

I just got into BU but I think EVMS is a better program and I will most likely still go there in the fall. I'm pretty set on EVMS as of right now.

awesome! californians in va...see you there. 🙂

Yes some currently in the program (there are 18 med masters ending the year) have gotten accepted at other schools. I should say again though, if you want to go to a school that is NOT EVMS, then this program is prob. not your best choice. This program does not focus on making your general application better, it is an ability to proove yourself in EVMS, taking their class load. But if the small primary care school seems like a fit, then this program is where you want to be.

I have a question regarding this: if I choose to go to the EVMS program, can I expect to have a chance to get into another school? I don't think I would mind Norfolk for one year, but I'm not a huge fan of the tidewater area and I don't think I could really take 5 years there (just personal preference, nothing against the area, but I'm a big city girl!). I mean, of the 18 in the program now, how many have gotten acceptances elsewhere? 1? 5? Is there the expectation that people in the program just matriculate into EVMS? I kind of have my heart set on some other medical schools in bigger cities (NOLA, DC, NYC, Boston, Philly, etc) and I may not go to EVMS if it really will inhibit my chances of getting into another school.

I'm just going to put it out there that these questions are kind of awkward questions to ask, because you're asking us to divulge information which is personal about other people. And while yes, you could reasonably expect others to be proud and want to shout it to the world, but its just not the case. Trust me. That said, yes there is an expectation that people in the program just matriculate into EVMS. Many of the students didn't get accepted elsewhere because they didn't apply anywhere else by choice; they've always wanted to attend, or came to love, EVMS. Of those who equally or moreso wanted to go to other schools, my impression is that most have been accepted to at least one other school, whether DO or allopathic. GWU, MCV, UCSF, whatever the name of that osteo school in blacksburg is... but like I said, most students prefer to go here.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by 'inhibit'. Are there SMP's out there that big-city allopathic schools just love, where its to your distinct advantage to go there? Not to knock you but just as a general comment: where you (informal 'you') go isn't going to make or break you, its the effort you put in and the quality of your own application. To foist the responsibility of your getting into a medical school on the particular SMP is to downplay your own responsibility in your education. If you don't want to go to EVMS you might as well pick somewhere else, not because another place will give you a better shot, but because you might as well go somewhere you enjoy. If you just want to go to medical school and love EVMS or don't even care, you might as well come to EVMS because you'll have the equal shot at other schools, plus preference in getting into EVMS.

I didn't mean to be intrusive, I was more of looking for historical averages...ie, "over the past 10 years, about 6 students in the program choose to attend other medical schools over EVMS, and then 14 matriculate to EVMS." I didn't mean to ask about individuals. My apologies regarding that.

As for "inhibit," I meant it more along the lines of whether or not medical schools say to themselves, "well, she's in the EVMS program, so she's just going to go there." I have no idea if that has any basis in fact at all (I was just curious if that's been people's experiences). I realize that I have full responsibility in my education, but it would be quite naive to say that medical schools simply don't consider where you obtained your education. Please don't misinterpret what I'm saying, I like EVMS. I've visited and enjoyed meeting the people there. I'm hoping that if/when I go to school there this fall, I fall in love with it and want to stay there. It's just hard to make a decision now since none of the SMP's really publish a lot of info about them, and all I have to go on is gut feelings about the school.

Again, I didn't mean to push buttons! I'm just having a lot of anxiety over picking a program. :scared:

the historic average, as i see it, is that most students either didn't apply to other places because they wanted EVMS or applied and got in elsewhere. I'm sure there are some who were forced to attend EVMS against their best desires, but it doesn't seem to be the prevailing trend. i will also say that each consecutive med master class seems to upstage the last in admission successes.

now that's certainly something that i wouldn't be surprised to hear actually does happen, given the intimacy of the program. However, it doesnt seem to be too big a factor since like i said people who wanted to go elsewhere by and large have done so. What you're talking about probably happens if you've betrayed a fondness for EVMS in your application and make them think you're applying to them as a back-up. I don't know, but I don't think they just pigeonhole you right off the bat.

it would be quite naive to say that medical schools simply don't consider where you obtained your education.
I think they do to a certain extent when you're talking about undergrad, but this isn't that. What instead seems to be the case is that, for example, Harvard grads get really good acceptances not because they went to Harvard, but because they continued doing the same things to the same degree that got themselves there in the first place. You would be the exception, not the rule, if you went and did poorly at Harvard and got some bangin' residency over someone at a lesser known school to rocked the boards and has all honors and AOA. It is with that sentiment in mind that I wrote my post.

Again, I didn't mean to push buttons! I'm just having a lot of anxiety over picking a program. :scared:
If you interpreted what I said as having had my buttons pushed, I owe you an apology. I'm just trying to help you guys out, not disclaimer everything I say which would make the post more verbose than it already is. We're all pretty busy with finals now, so I'm not particularly cheerful to begin with. Also, I don't have time in my life to be taking personally things said to me on a message board, so don't worry about having pushed my buttons.

Good luck everyone, feel free to PM any of us. And let us know when you're in Norfolk.

My 2 cents... if you aren't going to get into these other schools (dc, ny, philly) without evms, it is highly unlikely you are going to get in with evms. last year everyone that got into evms went to evms, 2 people got into other schools (both chose to go to evms) and no one got into any other allopathic school, yet everyone applied.

My 2 cents:
If you applied this year and were waitlisted somewhere, then you have a slight chance of getting in somewhere.
If you take take your mcats again and get a higher score then you'll have a better chance of getting in somewhere, especally if you had a interview during your first time applying.

It's a good point that this program alone isnt going to jump up your competitiveness, but then again people have already been accepted to Pitt, GW, MCV, UCSF.

BTW, how are things?

Thank you Phishfood! Your honest is very much appreciated. Sometimes things get lost in translation on a message board. It's wonderful that there are students who are willing to answer questions. 😀

Good luck on finals! I totally forgot that it's finals right now. Talk about a challenge!

I very much agree with what DOOOOM said. The competitiveness of your application at other schools will be determined by just that, your application. Look at it this way, by time you have applied to schools (most by time you even get to Norfolk), you won't have anything to show for your Masters program besides the fact that you are in it. It is true that you can send your first semester grades to the other schools you are applying to, but by that time you are prob already in to the application process pretty deep, or you are late (late submission being a strategy which may end up hurting you more than anything).

Good to see you still around and insightful doooom

thanks guys, good to hear from you guys too. Things are going well, just chilaxin till classes start but super excited. I hope exams are going well!! Word is you guys are tearin it up, so i'm sure all is well. Goodluck with the rest of the exams, later guys.

Some current Med Master's have been accepted to Pitt and UCSF? If this is the case, then I guess it really does show that as a Med Master you will not be limited in which schools you can be accepted to.

that 1 person was accepted to those schools and she would have gotten in with or without the program.

3 people, although the one we're talking about would have gotten in with or without the program.

When are people planning on heading out to Norfolk to make housing arrangements? Whens the best time to do this?

I've been looking on norfolk.craigslist.org and sinapse.evms.edu since I want to have a roommate. I've been emailing/calling a few people whose ads seem promising. I'm not sure when it's best to do this, but after looking at listings for months, I can tell you that people are just starting to look for roommates for the upcoming term...so this is probably when apartment landlords have a better idea of who's staying and who's not and how many available places they may have. I'm heading out there late June to hopefully finalize housing arrangements. That's just the soonest I can go.

its extremely important that you come to norfolk and look for places to live. many places for rent are advertised only by a sign in front of the building.

That said, I'll also go ahead and take this chance to advertise an extra bedroom in my condo that I need to rent out. I'm not going to hash out the whole advertisement here, but if you're looking for somewhere close to evms to live and may be interested, PM me.

thanks for the heads up. i just filled out a rental application to a privately owned condo, but i will definitely go to norfolk in the next month or so if that doesn't work out.

How easy is it to find an affordable place in Norfolk on short notice? If I do get pulled off the WL it might be close to the start date.

Has anyone called lately to get an update on thier Wait List Status? I wonder if it has started to move yet...

no news here.....feel kinda guilty calling again when she explicitly told me movement should not start until ~june....but from the looks of it, seems as though everyone on sdn that got accepted will be choosing evms.....🙁

Hey, I was wondering if any Med Master's could recommend a good apartment or condo complex that is within walking distance to the school for someone that is looking into renting a studio or one bedroom apartment? Also, good luck current Med Master's with regards to admission to EVMS.

Thanks for the update🙂 I probably will call the first week of June and I am patient, the second week 🙂

Bumpage. Is everyone just waiting to call around June 1stish 🙂

Current Med Master's have any of you heard back from admissions since you have graduated the program?

I talked to Nicole Priest this morning on the phone. She called to confirm that I'd be doing the program in the fall and to ask if I had any questions about housing. She told me to check out http://sinapse.evms.edu for postings about apartments for rent and students looking for roommates. Nicole is the nicest administrator that I've ever dealt with! Some sad news is that Nicole told me she's leaving her position in one week because she's moving. 🙁 She's not sure who will take over her job, but people can still contact Dr. Meyer, the program director if they have questions about the program, housing ect.

I also asked how many people in this year's med masters class got into EVMS. Nicole said "3 people didn't make it, but one of those three got into another kind of program...I'm sure exactly how many graduated in this years class, I think there were 18 or 19."

So 16/19 gives about an 85% success rate for EVMS!! I know all the med masters have worked hard this year, so congrats to everyone for finishing up a challenging program. If you count that other person who got into "another kind of program" (not sure, but maybe that means a DO school?) that's 17/19 or ~90% success rate. Nicole did not say how many of this year's class also got into other MD programs, but I've heard that 6 or 7 people have. If I wanted more statistics, Nicole said Dr. Meyer could give me them.

I was deciding between EVMS and Georgetown SMP, but I've picked EVMS. I like the supportive atmosphere and it has the best stats for getting into med school. I'll be visiting mid-June to go apartment hunting, so if any other med masters (this year's or next year's class) will be there and want to meet up or are looking for a roommate, pm me. I also wanted to give a shoutout to phishfood- he'll be an MI at EVMS next year- thanks for answering everyone's questions on this post, and Congrats!! 😀

aw I didn't know Nicole is leaving. I just talked with her this morning as well.

NCgirl -That's awesome that you made your decision in regards to where you're going. See you in august! The sinapse website is cool. I found my future roommate through there.

congrats phishfood! and yeah, you've been a great help in this forum. thanks!

Thanks for the information. It is sad that Ms. Priest is leaving, she was one of the few nice admissions people that I have talked to. Hopefully, they hire someone just as nice to replace her.

I'm headed down to Norfolk to get a tour of the school and look at some properties. E-mail me at [email protected] if you'd like to meet up.

18 graduated from the program
15 were accepted into EVMS
1 was accepted into a DO school

I'm thinking of visiting Norfolk to find a place to live after the 4th of July.

Hey guys, I can imagine how hard it is to sit on a waitlist and not know if you are going to get in to the Med Masters program, but just keep this in the back of your mind; in years past, there has been a ton of movement on the waitlist with people well beyond the top third being offered positions. Movement will happen all summer as some of the students holding positions on the Med Master wait list gain acceptance to Medical School.
Congrats to those future Med Masters and good luck to those of you still waiting, try not to stress out too much.

I hope so 🙁

Two med school waitlists, med masters WL, and no word from 3 other SMPs.. 🙁 I have no more motivation...

Thanks for the info👍

You should call and check on your status, I got that call last year, but only after I had been accepted for a while.

They could just be cleaning out their waitlist too, so I would give them a call.

Last couple days, no one has answered..I wonder if they are getting really busy with organizing the WL?

Finally talked to someone, seems like I am in the top 1/3, but still around 40 people ahead of me...

To give some hope for the waitlisters, it seems the program accepted 21 people into the program this year. Hopefully this will allow for some more movement in the list since in previous years they offered less acceptances.

21 started 18 graduated, the bump to 21 was only one more than the previous years number, but the same number of people ended up graduating from both classes (last years class had more acceptances to evms than ours if the 15 from our class is correct). MM '06 18 graduated 17 evms accepted. MM '07 18 graduated 15 accepted (again if that number is correct).

I got a fedex yesterday and I will be attending. So now I've been thinking about housing...

I'd like to get an apartment, preferrably with a roomate or two. Let me know if your interested. I'm pretty clean, especially about public areas(kitchen and bathrooms drive me nuts if they are dirty...). I'm a 23 year old male. Let me know if anyone's interested.

Jake

Grats to the ppl who got in! Out of curiosity, were you on the WL?
