Hi,

I want to set up a new thread of externships - internships. I can read about them online, but it is always cool to get the point of view from people who have actually been at the site.

What externships would you recommend and why?
What experiences did you get?

I am trying to figure out what I want to do in my 3rd year rotations.

Thanks.

I haven't gone yet, but I am doing externships this summer at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Ky and Peterson & Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Fl. I am very excited about both of them. I can tell you that they were both extremely nice and very flexible in setting up them up. I can post about them afterwards, but that won't be until june/july.

If you are equine focused, the AAEP (www.aaep.org) has a great externship searching section under student "avenues". I don't know anything about SA or other LA, though.

Cool. I will definitely tell my equine classmates. I heard that some of them are going to Anoka Equine, and then Root and Riddle, and some other place. I will get more info for you if you like.

Hi- I am just a lowly first year, so I have some time yet before I really need to use this thread, but my two cents is for small animal emergency or experience with many specialists, try an externship with Dr. Richter at the VCA clinic in Rancho Bernardo, CA. I worked there as a tech for about 2 years during undergrad- externs had a better chance of getting matched for internships, and got a TON of experience with the specialists and emergencies, too (if they wanted to drive themselves that hard!). There were 7 specialists when I left there in 2001- 3 internal med, 1 orthopod, 2 optho, 1 neuro, and the 1 radiologist moved in about a month after I left. The building is new (they moved 2 years after I left), and the doctors are so willing to share their knowledge- I know so much about ultrasounds from being the restrainer for the internal med docs.

And, it's in San Diego- a beautiful city to explore during time off!

Good luck finding the right fit for you.

Anyone care to share their recent externship experience?

I met a vet student through one of the blogs I read, and she did an externship in China working with pandas. It sounded amazing!

Just curious what kind of opportunities are out there and where I should be looking.

Of course I am a looooong way from doing externships, but I'm a planner and like to think ahead.

Thanks for any input!
