Florida Schools Application Thread (Part 3)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'll be there this Friday as well 🙂 I'm really excited about getting closer to making a final decision.

Update: REL called me today to inform me that I should be getting offered an acceptance early may (i'm upper-tier waitlist). With this new information I have decided to take one more visit to USF as well. I know that I really like FSU, but I dont want to be biased in my decsion making and ignore my opportunity to attend USF.

Good luck to all of those also on waitlists...it looks like we are about to have some movement :luck:

Well that is good news about USF. I am in the same boat as you. We have both been accepted to FSU and are on the high tier waitlist for USF. I will also be at FSU this Friday and look forward to meeting everybody.

I got the call from REL this morning as well. Low-tier waitlist 🙁 I'm really bummed about it since it's my only interview and my top choice. I haven't heard anything from FSU yet (I was still under consideration) but it's so late in the game. Looks like I'll be applying again for the next cycle. Congrats to all of you with an acceptance! 👍

Sorry to hear. My advice to you is to talk to REL about your particular application profile and find out what may have made your application weak to get considered that low. Then go back next year and do everything you can to improve your application. I'm sure you'll get in next time if you don't get in this time.

I'll tell you a story to cheer you up......

I have a friend who had about a 3.3 overall, 3.5 BCPM, and 30 MCAT. Because he had to work his way through college he had minimal vol./shadowing though he had some research done. At any rate, he got rejected 2x but after the second rejection from all schools including Fl. schools he did the Gtown SMP program, started volunteering with inner city kids, and eventually got his only interview at USF. That was the last or 2nd to last interview date at USF last year and shortly before main campus gets their spring break. He ended up with high tier waitlist and eventually an acceptance. Now he's almost done with M1. At least will be done with it in 2-3 months from now and doing very well.

So don't give up. Look for ways to improve your application and update like crazy and you'll get in somewhere in another cycle if this year doesn't work out.

Just got accepted to UF COM today!

Congrats! Had you recently interviewed or were you accepted off the hold list? I am just curious to see if there has been any movement off of the hold list at UF so far. I've been accepted to FSU and I am on hold at UF. With FSU's summer classes it'd be good to know something soon.

Thanks for the great story! 🙂 I've already set a date with REL so that we can talk about my application. I know that he's very honest with every applicant so I'm sure that he'll give me an idea of what went wrong. I'm VERY grateful to have interviewed but it's disappointing to be so close but yet so far. I know I'm stretching this a little bit but how many people tend to be on the waitlist (on average)?

aw man i wish you the best, but im sure you'll be ready for the next cycle after going through all you did...

I am not sure of the total number on the waitlist, but about 50-60 get taken off the waitlist. Most of those 50-60 are in the top 1/3 of the waitlist. Therefore, I don't know if that is an indication but it seems that it would mean that nearly 150-180 or so are on the waitlist.

Again, though, only REL can confirm that sort of detailed stuff. The only thing that is confirmed is what he told us already which was that about 50-60 people have been taken off in years past.

That's what I assumed as well. Thanks anyways.

Thanks NervousNed! I'll definitely be ready for the next cycle. I'm just waiting on Monday to find out what I need to improve on. 😕

When REL called me he said that I was in the "middle of the middle" and had a 50/50 chance of getting called off it, depending on this year's movement. I would think that the that would put thte waitlist somewhere around 120-130

You bring up a good point. That's why I was making a random guess and saying that only REL could confirm.

Anyone get a decision from UM today? I interviewed like 3.5 weks ago!!!!

I am very sorry. I think that going and talking to REL (like you plan on doing) is a great idea and will help you make your application very strong for the following year. I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks Soccer885!

Does anybody know when FSU stops interviewing? I've heard April 13 with a possible extension.

I was accepted directly from my interview which was on March 30th. Some people were taken off HOLD on Mondays meeting to fill out the class. Now all you have to do is wait for some movement (most around May). Good Luck!

they are so backed up, you'll probably be waiting for another couple of weeks. 🙁

I'm glad to see that you're taking another look at USF. It really is a great school. Deciding on a program can be really difficult, but realize that you'll get a good education with any of these Florida schools and eventually be an M.D.

A question to those attending FSU's orientation on Friday...

Casual attire is okay according to the email I recieved so I am planning on wearing jeans. Is this too casual? If you are going, what are you wearing? Stupid questions I know... I just don't want to look like an idiot if I am the only one in jeans.

Don't wear jeans, soccer; it's not professional. I'd wear business casual. In other words, slacks and a nice shirt or blouse, no tie or jacket needed.

Thank you. Never been in this situation before and didn't know what to expect 😉

are you being serious? or joking?

Eh, UM's step 2 board scores are pretty unreal.

First, Step 2 scores are SIGNIFICANTLY higher than Step 1 scores on average nationwide. I don't know what UF and UM Step 2 board scores are like, but the current 4th year class at USF had an average score of 232...

Don't fall into the trap of choosing a school because of how high their board scores are. Med schools love advertising their numbers. Just because school X has a higher score than school Y by 10 points doesn't mean that going to school X is going to get you a better score when you take the test. I'm convinced that how well you perform on these board exams is a reflection of your own brains in combination with how well you study. Almost everyone nationwide studies from the exact same review books like First Aid, BRS, and HY for Step 1 and Step 2. Your class material is not what you study for the boards (or at least it shouldn't be!). Sure your classes have a small role in how you do on the boards, but board exam scores really don't reflect which school you attend. For example, there are PLENTY of people at USF, FSU, UM, and UF who score just as well as students at the top tier programs like Harvard... Choose a school because you like the city, facilities, students, professors, curriculum!!! Like so many have said before, your ultimate decision is based on where you feel most comfortable and where you think you'll do your best for the next 4 years.

are you being serious? or joking?
No, I'm serious. Y'all aren't kids any more. You might get away with wearing your flipflops and pajamas to class for another year or two, but you're going to be wearing a shirt and tie as soon as you start seeing patients. Don't get me wrong; I'm a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal myself. I used to wear them every day when I was in grad school. But I didn't go to my medical school orientation dressed like I was planning to go work in the lab, you know? 🙂

hm.... I was thinking long flowy skirt + cute top... business casual would be a step up from that... but I guess I was thinking casual as casual, not business casual. And this is just early orientation, not the real one in May. Who knows...I might reconsider - but from the earlier post from karmega, I didn't get the impression of business casual - I guess it can't hurt to look nice. They cannot take our acceptances away from us tho... right? LOL jk 🙂

I don't really have anything that is business casual 🙁. Everything I have is like one step up from it. I don't really know what I am going to do...

^^ At New York Lerner's, there are nice slacks and different types of tops that will qualify nicely as business casual. They always have nice sales.

Also, Express and The Limited have lots of nice things.

Since you're starting med school soon and won't have time to shop, you should start buying business casual clothes from now gradually. Since med students are around patients and a professional environment, I agree with Q that the attire needs to be appropriate.

I hope this helps....PS I don't like shopping but my sister loves it and helps me out big time.

🙂

I second this!!! ^^^^

I love love love Express and they often have sales too!!😀

New York & Co. is a good store as well and often have sales and many deals. Sometimes if they don't have an actual sale they'll instead give you a coupon to get a certain discount off at a later date.

Even the reg. department stores like Dillards and Macys often have sales so its not hard to find good business clothes. Don't worry, my friend didn't go shopping until like a few weeks before she started.

That would probably be ok too. The point is that you want to look nice and professional, not like you just rolled out of bed or like you're about to head out for a night at a club.

No, they won't take your acceptance away if you show up not dressed professionally. It's pretty hard to get kicked out of med school unless you have something on your record that you didn't disclose or you just flat out don't do your work. But it would have to be pretty extreme for you to be kicked out; schools usually try to remediate you first. 😉

in regards to fsu's early orientation:

the email said casual. don't try to kiss ass by dressing business casual if you don't want to. i called the office way before we got the email, and they told me that t-shirt and shorts is more than ok. you're already accepted, and they won't kick you out even if you go in your pj's, at least not in the early orientation. as for me, i will look like i just rolled out of bed.

I found this. I don't know if it will be of help.
I would go with Dressy Casual for casual

http://fashion.about.com/cs/glossary/a/partydefinition.htm

I didn't quite expect this response from everybody and I appreciate it greatly. I decided to wear some nice dress pants and a blouse. I think it might be a bit to dressy but oh well, its comfortable.

I do need to start shopping now for some new clothes and will hit the stores that you guys mentioned. I don't know yet if I will be going to FSU or USF. I really want to go to USF but I am waitlisted there at the moment (high tier though). If I get accepted to USF I will have some more time to go shopping.

Thank you all again and I look forward to meeting those who will be at FSU tomorrow!

I am going to be at FSU's early orientation tomorrow, and from the e-mail I also got the idea that casual was fine. You can wear jeans and not look like you just rolled out of bed. I think it’s just important to feel like yourself and be presentable. I do agree with probably going shopping now for business clothes for later though…I hadn’t thought about that and it’s a good excuse for me to go to the mall. 🙄

It's not about kissing anyone's a**. It's about becoming a professional adult, and looking and acting like one. I will tell you now that you will do many, MANY things that you "don't want to" that are MUCH worse than wearing nice clothes while you're in medical school. And you will be expected to act professionally while you do them. So lose the 'tude, dude. Being an M1 is a lot like being a high school freshman, and you have just about the same amount of say in how things are run at your school.

alright man, seems like you're the one with the "'tude". it is precisely because of people like you that there is so much emphasis on appearances these days, "... looking and acting like one..." what is that about?, is that the med student stereotype that we have to fit. just because someone wears jeans does not make them less of a professional adult than someone that has a nice suit. you can go in a tuxedo, or a night gown for all i care, but the email was very specific. casual is flip flops as far as i'm concerned. what more professional than following directions.

I think you might be going overboard, they aren't seeing patients, they arent at an interview, they aren't at a ceremony, they are simply looking at the school. They can wear jeans and a shirt, its just an orientation. They should relax, enjoy what they see, learn about the school, like a tour. Let loose a little, its orientation for crying out loud!!

now for the more important question:

Out of the four schools in florida, which of the medical students have the most fun?

Whichever one is closest to South Beach.

I talked to Denisa at UF and she said they're going to give out about 15 more acceptances. Then after that the only hope is alternate list movement, but does anyone have an idea of how much the alternate list actually moves... (I know it's variable from year to year...etc) Or does anyone know if a lot of people get rejected in April, or do they just keeping string most people along til august. Thanks for any input.

I am not sure how much it moves, but it is not ranked and you still have compete by updating them with new activities etc. if you are on alternate list there.

A friend of mine interviewed there and they told her that if she gets put on hold and/or alternate list to keep updating them with new volunteer activities and things of that nature.

quick question, so UF has really high board scores...is this specifically b/c they teach directly towards the USMLE? I was looking at their match list and its not as impressive as you would think for what their board scores are...

From what I heard at the interview, all of their exams are in a computerized format similar to the USMLEs. Also, they don't really give exams for each class separately. The exams usually have questions testing knowledge from all of the classes that students are taking and ask vignette type questions like one would find on the boards. So, it's kind of like studying for and taking mini USMLEs the whole time your there.

I'm not looking to pick a fight with you, but you're really overextending your argument here. It's because "of people like me" that our society puts too much emphasis on appearance these days??? Besides the fact that I'm not actually all that powerful, and also that ad hominem arguments aren't really arguments at all, you obviously know very little about "people like me." For one thing, I'm a girl, not a man. 😉 Look, let's not have any more cross words in this thread. I'm just trying to tell you what medical school is like; there is a ton of emphasis on professionalism. It's an adjustment for everyone, including me. Anyway, you don't have to take my word for it; you'll see for yourself what it's like when you start in a few months. In the meantime, wear your jeans while you still can, and no hard feelings. 🙂

Considering that YOU want to attend CCLCM, your post made me laugh even more. You do know that they have a dress code even for the first two years there, don't you??? If you go there, you will be wearing a freaking SUIT to YOUR orientation. 😉

They teach the material you need to know well and test you on it in a manner that's similar to what you will see on the boards (vignette questions in a computer-based format).

As for the match list, how are you judging it in terms of "impressiveness"? They place tons of people into competitive specialties every year (at least 3-4 in rad onc, 3-4 neurosurg, 3-4 ortho, 3 derm, tons of rads and anesthesia) for the last couple of years out of a class size of 115. That's as solid as any of the florida schools, and probably better in some specialties.

Here's this year's list: http://medinfo.ufl.edu/students/match2007nonames.pdf

haha! Yeah I think a lot of premeds don't have an idea of how to even begin to compare match lists. Oh well! Everyone will learn at some point in their career.

That's weird/sucky that she told you that especially since they told my interviewing group that they accept over 50% of the hold list and most of the hold list movement happens in April. I hope 15 is an underexaggeration.

first of all, i refer to everyone as "man", even my girlfriend, so don't take it so literally. second, i did not wear jeans, but i sure as hell didn't dress up to your standards... oops. and about professionalism, trust me, "no one is more professional than i...".
