Florida Schools Application Thread (Part 3)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good luck. It's definitely better to be accepted and still waiting to hear from other schools than it is to be on waitlists and not accepted anywhere yet. But it still sucks to have to wait period. 👎

I'm doing ok. I did my taxes today (always frustrating!), and I'm kind of stressed with school. We're getting close to the end of the year. I can't believe I'm almost finished with my first year of med school already. When I first joined SDN, I had just taken the MCAT. That was almost three years ago. :wow: This time next year, I'll be getting ready to take the Boards.... 😱

I know what you mean about time slipping by faster then we realize. I know some people who graduate med school this year and it feels like it was just yesterday they started. And same with the M3s that we know, it seems like yesterday they were beginning medical school and now they are almost done with 3rd year. And to think they started only shortly before you took the MCAT and I made my first attempt at taking it. Before you know it, you'll be done with med school and wondering where the time went. Then residency will come and before you know it will be over and you'll be starting somewhere in an academic center hopefully doing research and practicing clinical medicine at some medical somewhere across the country.

Don't say at FAU... 🙂 I'm working on being at the main...shhh...
I still don't think it's worth the risk to hook up with someone in your year even if you're in Miami. Med school is stressful enough even when your personal life is completely trouble free. 🙂

Heh. I've got a ways to go yet. Hey, guju, are you applying this cycle, or are you waiting another year?

I don't know. I need to see what happens with this whole IMS thing. I'm so scared because there's a less then 8 percent chance of getting into the program since they had 3x as many applicants as they expected.

I am still hoping to hear from FSU about being accepted. I went in and talked to Jamie again (I go to FSU and have met with her in person post-interview once before). She said the comittee really liked me and thought I had a good chance of being accepted.

Anyways, I am going to be buying a new car within the next few weeks (my parents are helping a little for a graduation present), and am wondering if I should get a loan for my part of the payments before getting loans for medical school. Does anyone know or have any experience with something like this? The loan will be for about 10k.

Of course, this only matters IF I am accepted by FSU. Fingers crossed!!!

Yah I agree. The same guy at NJMS tells me that there's all sorts of drama too. I don't know how it is in smaller programs, but at places like NJMS, USF, UF, etc. a lot of my friends tell me that there's all sorts of politics and cliquey behavior. They also say a lot of people tend to be very gossipy and what not.

My friends are usually the kind of people that stay out of that sort of trouble and do their own thing.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is IMS? Like an SMP?

Med school is TOTALLY like being in HS again. Everyone knows everyone's business. Not that I have much business for people to know, mind you. :meanie: But the day after I taught my first Kaplan class, I come into school, and one of my classmates says, "I hear you're teaching MCAT classes." And I'm going, how the heck could *he* know that? It's not like he's studying for the MCAT; he's already in med school! Turns out that one of his friends was a student of mine. So yeah, no secrets.

Good luck, laney. :luck: As far as the loan goes, I'd say, can you get the car without it? If so, I think I'd avoid taking it. $10k doesn't seem like much now, and the FL schools are pretty reasonably priced, but still, you don't really want to take out any more loans if you can avoid it.

Yes correct. It is USF's SMP program.

Ironically enough, in highschool I didn't have a lot of people coming into my face like that. If people did, it wasn't people in my highschool per se unless they were certain indian people. Rather, it was generally at Indian parties when people really got up in your face about every little detail of your life, and they press you hard until you are forced to be rude and walk off because they are jumping down your throat too forcefully and rudely.

I didn't realize med students have the time to behave like this!

I didn't realize they have the lack of maturity to behave like this!

Wow:laugh:

Don't be so naive!!!! There are immature people at every stage in life. One would think it would get better with time, but reality is that it gets only worse with time even in other jobs and other settings.

Think about it. People are people. They don't necessarily change over night. The same people who were backstabbers as a child are more often then not the ones who acted that way as highschoolers. The same people that acted that way in HS often are the ones that act that way in college and the same people in college are the ones you'll encounter in med school.

Unfortunately not everyone has the sense and maturity to be fair to everyone and nice to others.

You only need to look at how harsh some of the SDNers in the allo and residency forums are if you need proof of that one.

People are people, and not everyone changes just because they've been accepted to med school.

I was kidding. 😉

Take care and have a good day !

No, you missed the point. I wasn't saying that if I went to miami vs. boca I would hook up with someone. I was implying that I hope I go to Miami period 🙂

Heh, I'm even older than some of the youngest faculty. 😳 Not the young MDs; they're about the same age as me or a few years older (mid thirties). But the PhDs, some of them are younger. 😛

Don't worry, there will always be older students than you in medical school. I think I'm in the running for being the oldest student in my class at USF (pending acceptance from waitlist) 😀

I am thinking about calling Jamie to see what the admissions commitee thought about my file. Does she do this over the phone? Also, you dont happen to know exaclty when they will start getting final decisions to people on the hold list do you? (I know the emails aid mid-late april)

Are you currently in the program and if so, how do you like it?

Are you currently in the program and if so, how do you like it?

No I'm not in it yet. Go to the postbac forum and field questions over there about IMS. This thread is about md applications. There's a thread over there for people applying and someone who posted that he's in the program.

Sorry not trying to be rude. But you'll get better answers from there. Mainly from the guy who posts as Ben2099

I know. I'm just saying, even at Miami, be careful. Even a class of 100+ can seem very small if you're trying to avoid someone. 🙂

Good luck...I think b/c of FSU's early start, their waitlist movement starts soon in general, even though they haven't ended interviews yet.

Best wishes. 🙂

Hey now!!! In the class of 2009 at USF, I can think of one guy who started at 39, another who started at 32 or so, a girl who was about 28, and then a few others. USF loves nontrads. I believe that UMiami does too as long as they have a lot of clinical experiences.

I know a 3rd year at Miami who was 37-39 when she started. So don't worry about it.

USF's Dr. Specter once said the oldest person they admitted was 54.

We had at least 4-5 people in our class who were >30 yrs old out of a total of 125 people. One of them had been a nurse for a few years, another had been in the military and a few more had just taken time to pursue other things before they started. The class below me (c/o 2006) had a person who started first year at the age of 50 😱 I cant imagine going through it at that age.

Yah I know what you mean, esp. since that's like 10-15 years away from retirement age. I don't know. For some reason I could see the 37-40 year old doing it, but it seems like I wouldn't have it in me to do it at 50+ years old.

But I admire those who got it in them to do it. 🙂

I just got a letter and e-mail from FSU saying that I had to drop all of my other acceptances by april 20th and confirm by that date that I am joining the FSU COM c/o 2011. What about MAy 15th??😕 REL is supposed to call me early may about my acceptance to USF (upper/high-tier waitlist). This is quite confusing. Is anyone else in a similar boat? Needless to say, because of this the FSU waitlist should get moving after/ around the 20th.

FSU is allowed to use an earlier decision date (April 20) because the school's start date is earlier. I realize that you get put in a precarious position by having to decide which med school to attend a month earlier than is normal, but keep in mind that you can hold onto multiple waitlist (e.g., USF) past that date. If REL calls you to tell you that you've been accepted to USF in May, you can still pull out and move to Tampa.

I think that the early decision date is a hindrance to those waiting to see financial aid packages from other schools. I know this sounds crazy but it is almost better to be high tiered waitlist than to be in with the early start date messing things up. I am still waiting for the financial aid packages from 3 schools, and it looks like I am going to have to make an uninformed decision. Please don't flame me for saying that. I know some are still waiting to get in.

Contact FSU and ask for a one or two week extension until you get your financial aid packages. I don't know if they'll give you one, but it can't hurt to ask, right? 🙂

I still drop by periodically to see what's going on with my future classmates over here. I also get good laughs every now and then because somehow it seems that us FL people really do have the best sense of humor on these boards 😀

Good luck to all you guys with everything...it will all be over before you know it. I still remember last year at this point in time struggling to finish my senior research and thesis, and time flies...first year is almost done! You'll be here before you know it.

Oh and on a side note DrZeke, don't let personal "crap" bog you down. I know it's tough, I went through the same exact situation a WEEK before starting med school last summer. It totally sucked and I was real down...and I let it interfere with school and grades. Don't make my mistake. You still have some months so make the most of it and spend time with good friends and have fun. Don't dedicate time and energy to those who don't deserve it. There are plenty of eligible singles both in and out of med school, I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding someone else nice. Be positive! 🙂

Oh and I recommend against dating within the class. Ugh. It IS like high school all over again, people LOVE to gossip and should the dating not work out, it could get real ugly. There's no running from the other person, trust me. They will always be there, especially when you don't want to see them anymore lol. Upperclassmen, however, are fair game 😉

Well I guess my confusion was "confirming" that I'm coming to FSU...I thought that would somehow bind me. Thanks for the clarification though. Its been a rocky ride this application season (and its not over yet), but I just wanted to say congrats to all the future Floridian doctors and good luck to those still pursuing thier medical dreams. 👍 :luck:

I am in a similar boat. I got accept to FSU, recently went to their early orientation which was very nice, but I am still waiting to hear back from UF. UF has me on hold and won't let me know till probably the end of April. It's annoying because I want to start looking for apartments if I know I'll be attending FSU. (i just like the dancing banana)

You are not contractually bound to go to FSU until the first day of official orientation in May. Having gone to the Apr. orientation does not bind you to going there from what I heard somewhere either on here or through a classmate. However, once you go to the May orientation, you are bound to go there. Hence, if REL calls before the May orientation starts you can still opt to drop your acceptance there and go elsewhere. There have been people who have done such a thing. About 3 or 4 years ago when I was in AED, this guy got off of a waitlist at UF like 4 days before school started. So there are definitely people dropping acceptances at the last minute if they got in somewhere else off of a waitlist.

hahaha yeah the new smilies are cool :biglove:

Good luck!!!!

So I get the letter from UF today, all excited. This is what it says (and I hate the person who came up w/ this wording) "UF COM is pleased to inform you that you are being offered a spot on an alternate list for the class of 2011." Gee, I feel like I won the lottery.... I was not expecting an altenate list letter till the end of April...bah.😎

Yeah, what a weird way to word that. Why did they feel the need to mention that they were pleased about this situation? If I were reading that letter, I would have read, "UF COM is pleased. . ." and just assumed it was an acceptance letter! What a crappy thing to do.

Still, I hope the alternate list turns into an acceptance. Congratulations on getting an interview (I didn't!) and even making it onto the hold list. It's a million times better than a rejection, but I know it feels crappy to be on a waitlist. Good luck!

I don't think they mentioned this situation, but being pleased about multiple championships. Everyone seems pleased here nowadays. :hardy:

oh man, now im anxious to receive my letter for this now too, ill be waiting for my mail 2moro...does any1 know what percentage of ppl, if any, get rejected post interview or does everyone on hold thats not accepted get placed on the waitlist so it isnt that big of a deal?

During my interview at UF I got the impression that no one really gets rejected post interview, I'm pretty sure that if you don't get in right away you go straight to hold and then to alternate list, which is why I was so pissed to read "pleased to inform you that we are recommending you for an alternate position" like it's something of high value being bestowed (I'm slightly bitter, but who isn't when they get non-acceptances). So as long as you didn't punch your interviewer, if you don't get accpeted right away, you'll probably be holding an alternate spot.

Jamey told me the waitlist for FSU should start to move around April 15 (which is this Sunday, so I assume she meant this Monday). Also, I believe the final interviews are this Friday.

For those on UF waitlist, be happy! I had a friend this week who was on hold that got rejected. Also, they said at interviews 2/3 of ppl interviewed eventually get in. Good luck!!

Does anyone know when does the Miami's waitlist start moving? May 15 or sooner?

I've been on hold at UF since after my interview in September and I just got my rejection letter in the mail today. 🙁

What are the chances of getting off the waitlist at UF and UMiami? I'm asking for a good friend of mine.

Also, how would you compare their match lists? I'm not sure how to read match lists so Boris or Medgator, could you comment on this please???? Pretty please with sugar on top?? Also could you guys comment on how well each of your respective schools prepare you for USMLE step 1 and 2???? Thanks you guys are the greatest. This is for a friend of mine. She was concerned but she's too shy to post on here.

The chances of getting off of the UM waitlist are pretty good. We accept 3/4 of our interviewees. Keep in mind, however, that the acceptance letter may not arrive until the summer.

Oh ok. Yeah I was just curious because a friend of mine is in that position. I'm hoping for the best for her because she's on a lot of waitlists. I think its because she got in her stuff muchos late due to some circumstances.

It's tough to really gauge match lists between different schools as there are so many factors that go into how things turn out in the end. A lot of people in my class liked UF a lot during med school so when it came down to rank list time, they ended up putting a UF program higher than other places they interviewed. That being said, the caliber of institutions people match into is one to look at a match list. Another way is to look at how many people match into given specialty each year. For the competitive specialities, you may see a track record begin to form. Some may argue that not everyone is interested in derm/rad onc/neurosurg/ortho, but nonetheless, if you see a school that consistent puts students into those specialties, I would think that's a good thing. I think deuist summed up the lists of all the Florida schools at some point in last year's thread. If you look at UF for example, they have put 3-4 people into rad onc, 3-4 people in neurosurg, 2-3 into derm and a few ortho, lots of rads over the past few years out of a class of 120-130 students (proportion of students going into a given specialty is probably another way to judge). I think its a testament to the strength of the school in that regard. Yet another way to judge things is to find out the percentage of students who match into one of their top 3 choices--- the number was high for UF when I was there, but I dont remember it off the top of my head.

As for the USMLE, i think ive talked about that a bit in previous posts on this thread. I think UF does a superb job for board prep with the computer-based testing system and excellent lectures from faculty. I thought pathology was really well taught on the whole during 2nd year and this is a big chunk of what ends up on Step 1. The averages at UF have been great the last few years--- It was 227 (Class of 2005 taking it in 2003) and from what i hear, has become better in more recent years. The US average is around 217. There's some info here: http://medinfo.ufl.edu/year3/USMLE_cbt_2006.pdf

I really couldn't tell you about Step 2--- its a different thing altogether. Its a test of the clinical application of your basic sci knowledge. The questions are way more clinical, but will sometimes ask you a basic sci concept. They say you're score should be within 5 points of your step 1, but from what ive seen, it ends up all over the place. A lot of how you is how motivated you are as a 4th year (at least in my opinion)

Ohh ok. Anyhow, there's another thread down below about BU vs. UF. Feel free to comment for those posters if you get a chance. They might be able to use your insight.

To all considering FSU:

I would be very wary, if you have multiple acceptances, of attending FSU, unless you are very sure that you want to do primary care, and don't mind spending 1/3 to 1/2 your medical school career in a rural locale. FSU pushes FP very hard. The student's I've seen post in this forum aren't lying or exaggerating when they say how hard FP is pushed. I know what they say during interviews, but once you get here, it's a different story. There is a huge agenda at this school, and I would encourage you to consider this when deciding on schools. If you think you might be as, or even a little less, happy at another school, you might want to seriously consider it. Because when you're a 2nd or 3rd year and decide you really like Ophtho, it's going to be very tough to find support for this. And you might be happier in Miami or Tampa for 3rd and 4th year than you would be in Pensacola.
